    Mikado - magnificent

by CateandFriends on 2012-02-11Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

This was an amazing production of this well-known G & S opera. The costumes were fun and really set each character apart. I was particularly impressed with the shoes ! The singing was clear and the manipulation of the lyrics to address current day Alberta was masterful, It was also a treat to see the orchestra ! I would see this production again.

    Mikado - YES!!!

by Anonymous on 2012-02-11Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

This was our first time to see Mikado live - we were more than pleasantly surprised by the combination of traditional G&S and contemporary placement for dialogue, sets and costuming. A delight! Wonderful!!!

All the time and money spent on the jubilee auditorium and they didnt stagger the seats. I actually had to move becuse I couldnt see a lot of the play, as it took place at the front of the stage. what a shame. The play itself was disappointing as well. It wasnt written as a comedy and whats the difference between everyone looking the same in Kimonos or everyone looking the same in goofy poodle skirts.

    Modern, brilliantly acted: solid entertainment!

by yjloiselle on 2012-02-10Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

I went in with a bit of reticence after hearing there was too much Albertanizing of the libretto. When the show began, I bought right into the premise, mostly because of the credible acting of the hilarious characters. The comical timing, the unbelievable voices, the modern costumes... they all amalgamated into a very funny, entertaining evening that flew by. I would commend the lead actors for such great performances; I was won over in the second act by Katisha, the elderly character played by Sonya Gosse. All in all, my favourite Gilbert & Sullivan "opera".

Great Show. Bright Colors, awesome costumes.

by CrazyWookie on 2012-02-09Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

A nice change. Never seen an english opera or one that wasn't european themed. Japanese themed and sung in English seemed like it could have either gone very well, or very bad, but in the end it was great. Really enjoyed the costumes, theme and colours. It was great that they set in more in a modern cyber-harajuku era which we could have related too.

    Amazing costumes

by Anonymous on 2012-02-09Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Amazing costumes; added life to a classic that was at risk of becoming dated. Added back the fun to the production. Kudos to the costume designer. Also lots of hometown pride that she's from Edmonton and part of our Edmonton Opera! That plus the additional dialogue poking fun at Alberta and Canadian institutions added interest and encouraged me to pay closer attention to all that was being said. Great staging; great directing; great acting; great orchestra!

    Mikado

by McGillicuttysFang on 2012-02-06Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

What guts! Initially my date and I were stunned. I was Nanki Poo several years ago and wanted to pull something like that off because that would be my demeanor. However I was not the director so we leaned to traditional 18th century banter and dress. This crew introduced a slice of suburbia in a well played out script that left me wanting to see the next scene,(which I already knew would happen). Huzzah!!

    Cavalleria Rusticana/I Pagliacci

by Hotflower on 2011-10-27Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

The two operas were completely different in terms of plot. Cavalleria Rusticana was unbelievably simple and melodramatic about an old-fashioned theme that would offend most women today. I Pagliacci was much more complex, comingling reality with fantasy. The leader singers were fantastic in both operas. I particularly enjoyed the narrator clown who opened I Pagliacci.

    Painful

by freefall on 2011-10-25Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

I started watching Operas from last year and I would like to point out that I'm by no means an Opera lover. My first live exposure to Opera was at the U of A's library and I was taken aback as I loved the fact that it transported me to a different time & place. Unfortunately, both these operas were on the same themes of jealousy, love and betrayal and were not on the same level as the the opera that I saw at the U of A library. Part of the reason could be that my seats were so far back. Both seemed long-winded but if I had to choose the better of the two I would say I Pagliacci had more to offer as it was a play within an opera. I'm giving the 2 stars because of the performances, sets and lighting but if I had to go to this opera again I wouldn't. Maybe I'm not cut out for operas as I feel my time would be better spent watching the sequel of Johnny English.

    Tosca was generally very good....

by foreignerfan on 2011-04-20Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

The event of seeing an opera should always be a grand one and there were many great things about seeing Tosca at the Jub (a great little venue!). As someone who has been fortunate enough to see many world class operas overseas this was my first in Edmonton. The overall experience was very good. The Soprano was excellent, powerful, moving, clear, audible, entertaining etc as was the Baritone, however the Tenor for me was not on a par. Yes, he is a great singer but his voice was often drowned out by the orchestra (who were really good) which was such a shame. When he was standing stage front his voice carried but any other position it was the orchestra I heard first and then his voice. Scenery, props, chorus all very good.

The leading lady had a powerful, beautiful voice. The men, I had difficulty hearing them over the Orchestra at times. The second and third acts were much more entertaining compared to the first, not just because the plot was more entertaining. I found the first act felt flat, perhaps a case of opening jitters. Overall, a delight to the senses, I just expected a bigger impact.

    Tosca

by BettyJen on 2011-04-11Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Tosca was wonderful for myself and my daughter. We loved every moment in particular we delighted by the passionate performance of Yannic-Muriel Noah. She is magnificant. The remaining cast sang and played their parts beautifully. Thank you for a wonderful evening of music.

"The Abduction from the Seraglio" was fantastic!

by Anonymous on 2011-02-12Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

This was my first opera experience, and because of that, it won't be my last. Beautiful orchestra, and the voices were amazing. A very entertaining and humorous opera. I look forward to another experience like this.

    Mozart shaken, not stirred

by AceRocket2000 on 2011-02-11Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

The Edmonton Opera Company always does a great job on a limited budget and this was no exception. I'm not a huge fan of setting operas ahead of their time but this was tongue and cheek enough to pass. It was funny, the singers were good to great, and the overall experience was very enjoyable. I'll be going again soon.

    Traditional treatment preferable

by Papagena on 2011-02-07Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Since it was written as a "Singspiel", it is understandable that the dialogues were adapted to more current times. The James Bond treatment did not praticularly appeal to me, though I love James Bond movies. Saving grace were the excellent sopranos of Charlotte Corwin (her wardrobe could have been more flattering) and Carla Huhtanen. Dean Elzinga was outstanding as Osmin. Mozart's music is so absolutely beautiful that is does not require any special effects like men flying through the theater and landing in parachutes on stage.I find it highly distracting.
