About

ELVIS COSTELLO IN CONCERT:

He may be the "other Elvis," but when it comes to clever, madcap,  personality-drenched rock and roll, there is only one Elvis Costello. From his days in the British punk and new wave scene to his pioneering role in the rise of power pop, Costello has repeatedly broken the mold, appealing to both cult and mainstream audiences. On tour as a one-man-band in  2013, he displayed serious performance chops, making a backing band seem obsolete with beautifully stripped-down versions of classics like "Allison" and "What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding." Hitting the road again in 2014, Costello will be treating fans to his acclaimed solo show as well as select dates with his band the Imposters.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

London-born Declan Patrick MacManus, better known as Elvis Costello, began playing music at an early age under the influence of his father, a talented musician and bandleader. After playing in a pub rock band in his early twenties, he released his solo debut album My Aim is True in 1977 to moderate success, landing in the Top 20 in the UK and Top 40 in the US. Shortly after forming his backing band the Attractions, Costello  released his breakthrough 1979 album Armed Forces, a No. 2 hit in the UK and an enduring new wave classic. In addition to his knack for catchy, clever songwriting, Costello's provocative performances, pointed political lyrics, and anti-authority attitude helped fuel his success. With more than 30 studio albums under his belt, Costello's impressive run continues with another highly anticipated tour in 2014.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Simply an amazing show. So many great songs, and the man just doesn't stop! A great experience!"

"It's amazing that all of the talent on display was coming from one man. He played for nearly two and a half hours and not a second was wasted. Performers like him are a rarity."

"Quirky, eclectic and utterly entertaining. Elvis' voice is as distinctive as ever, and while he played many of his classics, the set list included many songs that were throwbacks to his father's time. I have a whole new appreciation for the man's guitar talents."

Elvis gave us a long, long look....

by memelady on 2009-08-25Malkin Bowl - Vancouver

Show was really great. Elvis is so diverse and this show really illustrated that. I love the fact that he had no percussive section at all.... 3 guitars, mandolin, violin and accordian.....(I just found out I don't know how to spell accordian) Also, really enjoyed the updated slower version of his old classics. Great show.... loved sitting on chairs at Malkin Bowl as opposed to the grass.

Elvis and the Sugarcanes put on a Great performance last night - As moths - or bats - fluttered around the lights of the stage, Elvis and the Sugarcanes played from his past and his current lists. Loved it all! Changing guitars for almost every song, didn't miss drums, which I like in most concerts, they had us all wanting more and they gave it. A really fun evening.

    Elvis remains cool

by Norb on 2009-08-25Malkin Bowl - Vancouver

At 55 Elvis Costello remains contemporary and cool. His voice as silky today as he was on "Less than Zero" some 32 years ago. His energy was unstoppable and played for 2 hours without taking a breath. He played a number of pieces off his latest album,"Secret, Profane & Sugarcane' which was a collaboration with T-Bone Burnett. For a non-country music fan, I found that Elvis simply shakes it up and pours out the smooth. Speaking of smooth, the only complaint was that Malkin Bowl needs to ask the vendors who are selling the crazy Jamaican smoothies to shut the blenders and the loud conversation off during the concert.

    Elvis lives

by Gigs on 2009-08-25Malkin Bowl - Vancouver

It would have been nice if he played a little more of his old stuff. Security guards going up and down the isles were very distracting. The people working in the concession and shouting "I like your new hairdo" (not re: Elvis, but directed to a coworker) were really annoying.

by Charliejack on 2009-08-25Malkin Bowl - Vancouver

Great new arrangements of his classic songs, great covers, great new material. Elvis has done a lot of stylistic experimenting over the last 15 years, and with this excursion he looks to be completely comfortable in his own skin.

Elvis is amazing...a real croud pleaser

by misskimmie on 2009-08-25Malkin Bowl - Vancouver

Great concert !! The actual show time should be printed on the ticket...I come from out of town, we thought the concert started at 5;30. Two hours waiting in a lawn chair is enough to spoil the mood.

    Elvis at the Folk Fest

by flounder on 2009-07-26Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

Having never owned or listened to an Elvis Costello record my only exposure to him was his TV show Spectacle. At the urging of a friend I decided to give him a chance. I was blown away. His bluegrass/folk influenced portion was heartfelt and sincere. His early rock was lively. I'd see him again in a heatbeat.

    Elvis Costello's brilliance impressed.

by sckotpaints on 2009-07-26Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

The entire evening had an eclectic mix of music. Elvis and his band played a solid 2 plus hour set with loads of range and energy. The outdoor venue was superb for what the band offered to the raucous crowd. I highly recommend anyone to attend the Folk Fest next year in The Peg!

    Elvis is King

by homebrew on 2009-07-25Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

After waiting 31 years for this man to return all I can say is it was worth every minute. This was true Rock Royalty and it couldn't have been a more perfect evening nor a better setting to see him. He covered almost everything that I would have wanted to hear, although with such a vast repertoire of songs to choose from he would have had to play for a week straight to have heard every great tune. Now that he has found Winnipeg again I hope the wait for him to return doesn't last as long.

    Costello rocked!!!!

by Moustache on 2009-07-24Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

He kicked off the show with "Accidents Will Happen" and ripped through at least 25 more songs for the next 2 hours. He sounded like he was in his prime. The four piece band were flawless and tight.

    A legend that can't hold a tune ...

by Tdog on 2009-07-14Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

I was really excited to see Elvis Costello as the first act opening this year's extended Winnipeg folk festival. So, I paid the extra fee on top of my Winnipeg folk festival pass. This was not a retro venture for me - I lived through the musical era of his earlier work. I was quite disappointed and only stayed for a few songs. Perhaps his charisma was lost in the open air setting, or perhaps the crowd (other than the first few rows) were just not along for the ride. So, without the spell of a concert atmosphere, it was difficult to ignore the fact that Costello doesn't really sing on key. I don't expect perfect pitch, but with an audience of that magnitude I do expect musicianship. Who knows, maybe the monitors were not working well, but again, it is the job of the band/sound man to figure this out. Sorry Elvis, I really wanted to like you.

    Talent Wasted

by RoninVancouver on 2009-07-14Beacon Theatre - New York

With the greatest of respect to Mr. Costello, who I have witnessed many times (including an unforgettable performance in Rome), I was very disappointed with his current acoustic stage show. Don't get me wrong. I am a huge proponent of acoustic music and I was tremendously looking forward to this line-up. The members are very familiar too me and I recognize their all-star credentials. The question I have is: If Elvis went to all the trouble of having T Bone Burnett shape his current sound as well as the trouble of assembling bandmates of such great credentials, why didn't he give them some forward stage presence instead of insisting that he always be the focus of attention. While Jerry Douglas was allowed some breathing room, Mike Compton on mandolin was reduced to strumming chords (no beautiful mandolin single note runs or solos) and one of my favorites, Jim Lauderdale, was reduced to strumming the rhythm guitar (wasn't Elvis doing this all night as well?) and adding harmony to Elvis's voice (which didn't come through all that well and didn't mesh that well with Elvis' voice....Elvis would have been better advised to add a female voice to his own). I don't care much for the new material though I have to say that the workup of some older classics was interesting, particularly When I Write the Book. Was it worth the $100 dollar ticket price. No way.

    Elvis just kept on playing!

by Carbo on 2009-07-11Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

Before getting to the music, two thumbs down on event organizers for not separating ticket holder lines from ticket purchaser lines. I arrived 20 minutes before Martha Wainwright took the stage and missed her entire concert due to the 1 hour wait in line to get in. Bahamas was performing a quick set while the stage was prepared for Elvis Costello. Definitely a forgettable performance, but not what we were there for. Elvis was great. I expected a set mostly composed of his more recent forays into country-pop and bluegrass, since this was a folk festival. Instead, he started out with a few early tracks before giving an overview of his last decade in music, including tracks from King of America (has it really been over 20 years?). He threw in a pretty impressive new tune as well. As expected, there were a few songs from Secret, Profane and Sugarcane. He has to promote the new album after all. He wrapped up the set with a few songs with the Lovell Sisters who had opened the concert. I don't think they were really able to keep up, or maybe they were nervous. I expected a couple of tunes for an encore, but Elvis was having too much fun. He came out and ripped through another 40-minute set of his early music... Allison, Red Shoes, Pump It Up, and finished with Peace, Love & Understanding. Clearly there were not just folkies in the audience, because they just ate it up. The only criticism I have would be the Imposters' keyboardist. He was far too unidimensional and obtrusive at times. He is in love with one effect on his keyboard which just gave it an annoying sound which did not fit the music. I would highly recommend looking into attending any future Elvis Costello concerts.
