About

ELVIS COSTELLO IN CONCERT:

He may be the "other Elvis," but when it comes to clever, madcap,  personality-drenched rock and roll, there is only one Elvis Costello. From his days in the British punk and new wave scene to his pioneering role in the rise of power pop, Costello has repeatedly broken the mold, appealing to both cult and mainstream audiences. On tour as a one-man-band in  2013, he displayed serious performance chops, making a backing band seem obsolete with beautifully stripped-down versions of classics like "Allison" and "What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding." Hitting the road again in 2014, Costello will be treating fans to his acclaimed solo show as well as select dates with his band the Imposters.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

London-born Declan Patrick MacManus, better known as Elvis Costello, began playing music at an early age under the influence of his father, a talented musician and bandleader. After playing in a pub rock band in his early twenties, he released his solo debut album My Aim is True in 1977 to moderate success, landing in the Top 20 in the UK and Top 40 in the US. Shortly after forming his backing band the Attractions, Costello  released his breakthrough 1979 album Armed Forces, a No. 2 hit in the UK and an enduring new wave classic. In addition to his knack for catchy, clever songwriting, Costello's provocative performances, pointed political lyrics, and anti-authority attitude helped fuel his success. With more than 30 studio albums under his belt, Costello's impressive run continues with another highly anticipated tour in 2014.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Simply an amazing show. So many great songs, and the man just doesn't stop! A great experience!"

"It's amazing that all of the talent on display was coming from one man. He played for nearly two and a half hours and not a second was wasted. Performers like him are a rarity."

"Quirky, eclectic and utterly entertaining. Elvis' voice is as distinctive as ever, and while he played many of his classics, the set list included many songs that were throwbacks to his father's time. I have a whole new appreciation for the man's guitar talents."

    Elvis Aim was Truly Enjoyable

by Pete on 2009-07-10Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

I loved the way Elvis started with 30 minutes of rapid-fire old favorites. The last 45 minutes was more of the same. In the middle there were slower classics and the debut of new material, featuring songs from his new album. Secret, Profane & Sugarcane. Elvis and the Imposters played with intensity and urgency and Elvis displayed his very strong vocals.

    Elvis is still the King.

by FanOfElvis on 2009-07-10Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

This was my first time at a Folk Festival event. Not a folk fan, but I am an Elvis fan. He was fabulous, but I was also impressed with the sound quality. It was so clean compared to the arena and stadium events. The variety of food available from the folk fest vendors was also impressive. I would definitely recommend this event to anyone that can stand folk music or if there is another popular artist headlining.

    Elvis's aim is true

by Andrew on 2009-07-10Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

Being a huge Elvis fan and never having had the opportunity to catch him live, I was really unsure what to expect ,especially considering it would be an out door event in Winnipeg ,where you can expect any kind of weather. I threw caution to the wind, convinced my wife this was an event that would be a once in a lifetime opportunity, and headed to the show. From the opening chord Elvis aimed to please and hit the mark dead on. His voice was spot on and the band was incredibly tight. The set list was perfect ensuring he played all his hits while also getting a little folksy for the Folk Fest crowd, Having the bluegrass background of the Levon sisters added to the ambiance for a few songs.Even hearing his new song "Condemmed Man" was awesome .Some very gritty guitar and lyrics that were just great Then the encore set which was a full six songs deep. Alison, and Pump it up never sounded so good. There I was a fifty year old guy doing the "POGO" with my wife at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, and what a way to end really"What's so funny bout Peace Love and Understanding." Thank You Elvis it was truly an amazing night. I look forward to next seasons Spectacle hope you come our way again.

    Elvis Costello

by Casper on 2009-07-10Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

Non stop entertainer . For his encore he did not do just one or two songs but an entire set. He also interacts with the crowd making you feel like he is there for you. Plus the setting was awesome, outside and a perfect evening weather wise. The other entertainers on the venue were also great. All this for a cost of $40.00, what a BARGAIN!!!

    Elvis Costello is the King

by MacGarver on 2009-07-09Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

While the Winnipeg Folk Festival is always a good time (especially when it's not raining) this event was really about Elvis Costello. His performance was fantastic. Two solid hours of witty, poignant and, at times, biting lyricism, married with wonderful melody...there's a reason this guy is a legend. He played non stop. I think he was 6 or 8 songs in before he even looked up and acknowledged anyone else was even there. A master showman, with the depth of material to smack one across the face and command attention. While E.C. is way too prolific to have accommodated everyone's favourite, no one went away disappointed. From newer material to so many hits (Alison, Watching the Detectives, I Don't Want to Go to Chelsea, Pump It Up, Radio Radio, What's so Funny About Peace Love and Understanding...etc., etc.,) there was more than enough for everyone. At $40 for non weekend pass holders ($20 for holders) this show would have been worth every penny at twice the price. Definitely 5 stars.

Elvis was fab... the lineup to get in not so much

by gingergirl on 2009-07-09Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

It was my first time back to the Festival in about 6 years. It was great, the vendors were great, the volunteers were wonderful. Elvis was phenomenal. All in all a great event and evening. The ticket for wristband swap was the only thing that marred the evening. It took nearly an hour to do this. For next year, there must be an easier way.

    EXCELLENT EVENING !

by Bellasonshine on 2009-07-09Winnipeg Folk Festival Concert Site - Birds Hill Provincial Park - Winnipeg

Elvis Costello and company were great ! He really seemed to enjoy the night himself, having a couple of sing-a-longs and laughs along the way. The sound was very good, the weather fabulous and the crowd very appreciative of the master. The band was tight and having the Lovell Sisters play for a few tunes was a nice touch. Elvis can still play a mean guitar and put on a great show.
