  • Where's the Jazz Esperanza!

    by C53M on 2015-06-24Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 1 out of 5

Esperanza's show was a little disappointing. She is an exceptionally talented musician; however the actual show lacked substance and reminded me of a musical put on by high school students. It was difficult to hear her voice because the music was louder than her voice. And I am not sure what the exact genre of music she played..Metal, Rock? Certainly not Jazz.

  • This was an outright waste of time and money!!!

by Anthonye on 2015-06-24Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 1 out of 5

She has a great voice and can really play the bass guitar but her material is terrible. We walked out half way through and so did many others. The Jazz festival needs to get better acts next year.

  • Esperanza still amazing...and not even 30!!

Great trio, venue, and performance...perfect evening!!

  • Esperanza Spalding

by SCHTEEEEEEVE on 2014-10-15Queen Elizabeth Theatre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

I was extremely enthused before, during and after the performance from Esperanza Spalding and her band. She took over the stage with her virtuosity, diversity of voice and instrumentation, musical stylings and her excellent drummer and keyboard personnel complementing her vision and intelligence and understanding of the music she was playing. A great night of music.

  • Oozing with talent but show lacked structure

by Donnalynn on 2012-07-03Métropolis - MontrealRating: 2 out of 5

It is not often that one can experience such talent! However,Esperanza was narrating the show with a cryptic story that we could not hear, nor understand. Her show should have been more commercial and less a showcase of talent as all 8 of us were left unfulfilled.

  • Esperanza Spalding

by Bernard on 2012-07-03Mainstage Marquee at Nathan Phillips Square - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

An amazing new jazz artist. Her music is really a new concept in composing and the way she uses her voice is also remarquable. My only beef is with the tent. I don't ever want to pay to go in there. Sound is good for a hundred people lucky enough to be in the center and on a hot summer day the heat stays inside and it is borderline uncomfortable.

  • Esperanza Spalding and Radio City Band

by Debora7 on 2012-07-02Mainstage Marquee at Nathan Phillips Square - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Gretchen Parlato opened for Spalding and she was terrific. Show started at 8:00pm in the big tent. Her voice could have been powered more through the PA system though, however the show was thoroughly enjoyable. Esperanza was quite late in coming on - about 9:45pm. Her band was exceptional as was she. All of her individual players are extremely accomplished in their playing. Esperanza was funky, bright, and fun, telling a story with words and music. Big personality.

  • Beautiful and soulful

by 2112andsuch on 2012-07-02Mainstage Marquee at Nathan Phillips Square - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

I didn't expect anything less from Miss Spalding. Her live performance is even more captivating than her studio recordings. The show had a very intimate feeling- I only wish the audience had have been more enthusiastic about singing along when she had asked everyone to.

  • Esperanza was absolutely amazing!!!!!

This was one concert I have been waiting for, for years, and not only was this concert WAY under priced, it was a truly incredible evening

  • Great Jazz

by paladin on 2012-07-02Mainstage Marquee at Nathan Phillips Square - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

10 piece band with 7 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones and 3 saxaphones, guitar, base of course) keyboards and drums. Esperanza told a story and puntuated it with music. She gave the band its' due with the solos they had and she killed on the electric and stand up base. Her voice was great and she did all her well known songs.

  • So Boring

by WednesdayBoy on 2012-07-02Mainstage Marquee at Nathan Phillips Square - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5

It was a very boring and uninspiring performance. She spent more time on her in between song chattter rather then on the music

  • Love Esperanza!

by LauraJazz on 2012-07-02Mainstage Marquee at Nathan Phillips Square - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

Esperanza is an amazing artist. The instruments were all clear. All artists had amazing talent and seemed to really enjoy playing the music. The band was late getting on, so the concert ended later. Pretty unusual arrangements.
