FATHER JOHN MISTY IN CONCERT:
Father John Misty brings folk into the 21st century with each eclectic element he incorporates into his unique sound, and his charismatic showmanship makes his live shows a must-see. When he's strumming his way through ballads like ìThe Night Josh Tillman Came to Our Apartmentî his emotional vocals and heartbreaking lyrics make alt-country fans feel right at home. But heís just as comfortable strutting his stuff to noisy, spiteful rockers like ìThe Ideal Husbandî and turning out full-blown electronica on tracks like the transcendently beautiful ìTrue Affectionî. With his singular combination of Americana traditions with cutting-edge sounds, Father John Misty is a folk icon for a new generation, and fans won't want to miss the chance to see him conjure up his immersive sound in concert.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Before making his debut as Father John Misty in 2012, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joshua Tillman was busy recording late-night demos in the Seattle-area. After self-releasing two CD-R demos he attracted the attention of Fargo Records, and in 2006 the label released his debut album Minor Works. In 2008 Tillman was tapped by indie darlings Fleet Foxes, who needed a drummer for the recording of their self-titled debut. Though he gained widespread exposure and success with Fleet Foxes, Tillman left to pursue his creative reinvention as Father John Misty in 2012. After a warm reception from critics and fans for his debut album Fear Fun, he set out on his first solo headlining tour. His 2015 follow-up album I Love You, Honeybear was a breakthrough success, appearing on best-of lists from esteemed sources like Pitchfork, Roughtrade, and Stereogum. As he continues to breathe new life into indie folk with his wide-ranging influences and poetic gifts, Father John Mistyís electrifying performances have fans eagerly anticipating whatís next from the innovative troubadour.

Honestly, it was top 3 concert material. He sounded great, we got to hear material from 2 seperate albums for the first time. He played most of my favourites, and the venue was awe inspiring. The perfect place to see the tour for Chloe. The man himself said it felt special. I desperately wanted to yell out “you should start a cult!” But I thought better of it. Mr. Misty is very enigmatic and riveting to watch. I love seeing concerts in Vancouver, this one was one of my faves EVER.
One of the best concerts I’ve been too. The band was fantastic, Josh was next level and the venue was great.
I've seen an enjoyed FJM twice before but found the sound this time in the Orpheum a bit too blaring. His quieter songs sounded better. I was seated in orchestra 29 rows back. The band was good but unfortunately my short wife didn't have much of a view after Josh Tillman wanted the audience to stand. Fair enough, next time we'll be on the balcony
I have seen hundreds of concerts in my life and this one was top 3.
J. Tillman and his band were simply captivating from start to finish. His ability to connect with the audience and his willingness to hold nothing back on stage sets him apart from the majority of acts touring today. The sound, the lighting and the venue were also top shelf. Over all a magical performance by an artist who understands how to put on a exceptional rock show. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend seeing Father John Misty in the flesh.
Really great, His band is tight and he is dialed in.
We travelled 5 hours to see the show and those miles were well worth it. What a cat. His on stage presence and performance Are pure entertainment and the level of talent and his music leave you with a feeling of "whoa, what just happened in there?" as you walk back into the world. We would see him again a million times over.
This show was definitely not what I expected. J Tillman is much more of a performer than I imagined. I only ever saw clips of him solo with an acoustic before. This was a great show, great band, super tight! The theatre setting was perfect.
I loved that the Commodore Ballroom was chock full of true true fans, who know every lyric by heart! Intense, hauntingly beautiful melodies juxtaposed against insanely intelligent lyrics that range from deep and damaged to sweet and "almost" innocent to cynical digested anger to humorous (if not so sad) pure genius. Father John Misty makes me think "Jim Morrison meets Leonard Cohen under the spell of Edith Piaf"- the ultimate showman, a phenomenal musical talent, with superbly intelligent lyrics and a silky voice that is intoxicating! The Commodore Ballroom is the perfect venue for this artist! The energy was palpable - there seemed to be a communion, knowing that sharing this moment was truly something sacred!
Father John Misty was one of the best performances I've seen in a long time!
He's amazing and on an amazing show. Love the danforth music hall
Guitar slammed down, walk off, freak out? Don't blame him though.
Father John Misty was great! He is always great. He has a great voice, he is super funny and very charismatic. However, he is a bit of a diva too. Maybe just due to alcohol consumption or maybe he was just in a bad mood, but Josh Tillman can act like a real big baby when he doesn't get his way. After a completely enthralling show, Mr.Misty comes back out on to the stage to play his encore to a room of enthusiastic fans. He shares a heart felt moment with the crowd, describing the disconnect you feel with your art after touring for over a year and a half of playing it over and over again. He then makes mention that being yelled at while on stage is weird and not something one get's used to. Now, hands on hips, as if to tell the crowd to "be quiet, I'm gonna play a song now" he is yelled at by an obviously drunk DUDE from the back of the room. For some reason Josh was just unable to handle this and proceeded to removed his guitar, smash it on the ground, throw his pick and leave. It was still a good show, but ultimately insulting to the fans that were there to see a great writer/musician share his art. The sold out crowd should not have been punished for one silly frat boy with a big mouth. What surprises me most about the entire incident is the throngs of brainwashed fans under the spell of Misty's charming cult leader-Esq qualities who feel the need to apologize to him on behalf of Toronto. Really? The guy has a temper tantrum and we should be the ones apologizing? I will forever be a FJM fan, but will think twice before I give him anymore money to see him live. The hissy fit left a bad taste in my mouth, but not in my ears!
I just bought tickets to see him for the 4th time in a year. I think that says it all!
The FJM show was awesome!! Loved it!! Except for the group of giants who, when the band came on, rushed up in front of everyone to the stage. That's always annoying. Tillman was excellent live!! Brings a lot of energy to the slower stuff!! And he was looking pretty good too! Music was tight! Great show!!! I got a little too drunk by the end of it though so maybe this was all thanks to that! ;)
