    side balcony

    by Brad C on 2022-05-10Eglise St-Jean-Baptiste - Montréal

Fran was good and did not disappoint. We bought seats on the upper balcony (on the side). Once it started, we realised this was a huge mistake. At the Eglise St-Jean Baptiste you have to sit in the main congregation. That is why everyone departed the two balconies en masse at the start of the show. I think the interviewer could have come up with a few more interesting questions. Programs needs some structure. The Q and A is too long, too many random questions. Would it have been too much to have a microphone for the audience to pose their questions rather than scream them out. It was the wrong venue for this show. I would go back to the venue for a concert but do NOT get the balcony seats on the sides.

    Grab in Montréal

    by LL on 2022-05-10Eglise St-Jean-Baptiste - Montréal

Great venue, Fran did not disappoint. The introduction by Josh Freed would have been better off there had been more French. The floor would have been enhanced had there been microphones circulating in the audience.

    Exactly what I was expecting.

    by Cyberjewel on 2022-05-10Eglise St-Jean-Baptiste - Montréal

This venue was really great, the chirch environment and light show was magical. Fran was honest and shared some of her wisdom. The only REALLY annoying thing was for the answer question period where the audience did not have a microphone to ask question. Fran and audience had a hard time hearing questions and people had to literally YELL out questions. They should have planned for the Q&A and therefore lose less time with the process.

    Terrible venue and organization

    by S on 2022-05-10Eglise St-Jean-Baptiste - Montréal

Beautiful church, terrible venue. Couldn’t hear a thing. Audience wasn’t even provided with a microphone or facilitator for the Q&A. Fran wasn’t even initially placed in the center of the stage, so everyone placed on the balconies had to move down (also because the sound was terrible - but it wasn’t better downstairs either.) I wish I could get my money back.

Venue was pretty but not practical

    by Steve C on 2022-05-10Eglise St-Jean-Baptiste - Montréal

Fran was great—maybe 25% new material and 100% enjoyable. The venue, a big old Catholic church, was pretty but not very practical. The pews were uncomfortable and the sound was surprisingly bad, especially for the audience questions. Fran could hardly hear the audience. The combo of mask mandate and bad acoustics wasn’t great.

    Terrible sound.

    by Gita on 2022-05-10Eglise St-Jean-Baptiste - Montréal

The sound was so bad that no one could hear including Fran. It was very disappointing. 2/3 of the show was questions from the audience and there was no microphone. With 50f vaulted ceilings the sound went nowhere. Most people wouldn’t even hear Fran and she was using a mic. So disappointing

Fran was great, venue needs MC

    by Charlotte on 2022-05-10Eglise St-Jean-Baptiste - Montréal

The first 30 minutes was an interview between Fran and journalist, it was funny with classic Fran jokes. The next hour was followed by questions from the audience but there was no mic for this period. We were +1,200 people in the room. Fran had hers but audience members had to scream their questions and it was all very chaotic. The venue could have easily heightened their logistics.

    Wonderful Fran, horrible venue.

    by Steve on 2022-05-09Eglise St-Jean-Baptiste - Montréal

Fran Lebowitz was her usual witty and brilliant self, but it was lost in that pit of a venue Evenko put her in. The sound was horrible, we had a hard time hearing her, we were seated on church pews making the event uncomfortable as hell. Whoever chose this church for this event was disrespectful to not only Fran Lebowitz, but her fans. One of the greatest minds of our time, drowned out by bad acoustics. It was a fail on every level. After ten minutes, there was an exodus from the audience, and we were all disgruntled to some degree. We posted our comments on the Evenko page, but they quickly shut it down. So do us all a favour, if you are to invite Lebowitz back to Montreal, either find her a decent venue, or don't invite her at all. It was a waste of an evening.

    Exceptional

by Persil de Neige on 2022-05-09Eglise St-Jean-Baptiste - Montréal

Fran Lebowitz has been my literary and philosophical hero since 1976. I was thrilled to see her for the first time in person and she really delivered. The first half hour was devoted to questions from Josh Freed, a noted Montreal journalist, then one hour was devoted to questions from the crowd. I was very impressed by how she can handle a variety of questions with such ease. After the show was over, she signed book (there were books for sale) - I brought my books bought in the late 1970s/early 1980s and she signed them. She is very personable and natural, and she was willing to pose for a photo with me at the signing table, which I really appreciated. For the organization and venue, the Eglise St-Jean Baptiste venue was certainly beautiful - Fran even commented that she would love to have it has her living space. One note for during the question and answer, they really should have had a microphone available to those asking - it was difficult to hear and Fran often had to ask the person to repeat themselves. Other than that, it was a wonderful evening and if Fran Lebowitz returns within travelling distance, I will go see her again.

Fran was great, but the organizers...

    by Kelly on 2022-05-09Eglise St-Jean-Baptiste - Montréal

The venue was beautiful. Everyone was looking to have the best view of Fran, without imagining it would be the sound that would make the experience average for some (I'm sure not a few) of us. Nothing could be understood on the second floor. Might it have been the sound equipment, the speakers positioning or something else. Almost everyone had to go downstairs to watch the show, standing or bothering others while looking for a spot to sit. Then... Audience Q&A. Or better: audience yelling at Fran. It was impossible to hear people's questions; not even Fran had it easy. Questions had to be repeated twice and three times by the person asking or someone with "bigger lungs" in between them and Fran. I wonder if maybe, just maybe, having microphones ready for the audience would've made it easier and smoother. I hope next time nobody forgets to tick the sound box in the event's prep checklist.
