I went in with very low expectations... seen one show seen them all.... but not having seen a Grandstand show in several years, I have to admit I was thoroughly entertained and the time flew by! Worth the $50!
We never saw chuck wagon races before, and we were surprised how quickly you start cheering for your favourites and start trying to pick the next winners. It was a lot of fun to watch this action. Then there was a longish break after the derby while they set up for the show. They could have had a band playing or something to help the audience with the transition. But once the show started, any annoyance over the delay evaporated! The show was an assault on the senses - beautiful singing, terrific costumes, lights, smoke, fire, fireworks. Your eyes couldn't take it in fast enough. Several people we had met in Calgary before the show said that we "had" to get tickets to the show and that we would like it despite the price - well, they were right! It's an event that should NOT be missed!!
Cooler day, Chucks weren't as interesting as they have been in the past. A lot missing with 2 less outriders...seemed real calm and sedate compared with other years. Unfortunately a Horse broke its leg while we were there and put a damper on things as well. I stand by the Races and wish the promoters would not cave to SPCA demands... nothing could have stopped that horse from breaking its leg except not running at all.. Next they will demand we stop this entirely.. Viva Chuck wagon races!!! But it seems with all the interference it is losing it's momentum...
