Hair was okay. The sound could have been better but overall for the price this was great entertainment that brings back a lot of memorys
Despite the efforts of the enthusiastic and talented cast, the show lacked polish and suffered from ongoing mic problems. The band, although very good, tended to drown out the voices of the singers. Overall, it felt like a high school production....
My husband & I went to see Hair last night, but it wasn't very good. I think the River Rock Theatre was too big for this group from Seattle. Also the group wasn't very polished. The tickets for this event should have been a lot less! We left during the intermission!
The cast was very talented. The set was not well designed and the direction was lousy. It was worth the admission for the great singing although the sound system was not up to snuff. They could use a costume designer that lived through the time of love and peace. There wasn't a bellbottom or tie dye to be seen. The cast looked like they walked off the street in those clothes. The sixties was very colourful. All in all, it was a fun evening though.
I have to say I found the prodouction to be very poor. We were in the front row and could barely hear the lyrics being sung. The production on a whole seemed very disjointed and lacked any continuity. It was a both a waste of time and money.
super value great fun great music high energy, sex drugs and rock and roll; these kids really enjoyed entertaining us . This was a real ride down memory lane having been in TO in the 60's and seeing this show When the show began I was wondering how these kids would pull this experience off and oh boy they've got it and they gave it !!!!!! kudos to the kids from band class they played all night as the other performers sang and danced all night I hope their time in Vancouver was as good for them as it was for us having them here.
The acting was good. I enjoyed the live music. However the entire production seemed to lack energy. I would have liked to see them belt out the songs with more enthusiasm. The set was very plain. They wheeled out a small rickety painter's scaffold for a couple numbers. I think the biggest disappointment though was the costumes. they were almost non-existent. Cut-offs and t-shirts? Is that really the best you could do?
We were unaware that the performers would be amateurs from a University and not professional grade stage players. They worked it very hard however & gave their best I'm sure. Oner of the female lead singers was very good. It would be difficult anyway for some to relate to a time 40 years ago. The band was weak. Not large enough and not strong enough in the sections they needed to be. They were lost in the background in more ways than their music.
After I purchased the tickets I started to worry that I would regret it. Could a forty-one year old play that was so topical still be relevant. I loved it again. The kids were amazing. They certainly deserved the standing ovation they got. They had great energy, the only problems were sound issues with bad microphones and the clothes were off. Nobody wore neutrals and shorts back then it was all jeans and a kaleidoscope of bright colors. The performance was still outstanding. I saw Hair at the Moore theatre in Seattle in 1970 and completely loved it. I saw it again at the Queen Elizabeth theatre in Vancouver in 1971 and found it to be lackluster as if the cast had done too many performances.
amateurish, vocals were offkey, lighting off, no proper sets, whole thing did a great disservice to the original production. What were they thinking?
...Make love, not war... Fast pace for this 2 hour show and many tunes sung by the audience along w/ the cast. Well cast, great voices w/ a total commitment by the cast to their characters. Fun to see the audience join on the stage to sing Let the Sun Shine. Glad I went.
