Half Moon Run on Tour

Since the release of their 2012 debut album, Dark Eyes, Montreal indie-rock quartet Half Moon Run have developed a reputation as one of Canada's most mesmerizing live bands. Not only does the group feature four equally versatile multi-instrumentalists — resulting in copious onstage role-swapping — each member is blessed with an angelic voice that contributes to their spine-tingling, church-worthy harmonies. Half Moon Run are the sort of singular band that possess the wiry intensity to rock a small club, the anthemic grandeur to captivate festival crowds and the sophisticated arrangements to enhance the soft-seater theater experience. And to properly recreate their signature songs in a live setting, the band employ two drum sets, ensuring that each show builds into a heart-racing, percussion-pounding spectacle.

Half Moon Run in Concert

Formed in Montreal in 2010, Half Moon Run quickly sprinted to the frontlines of that city's fabled indie-rock scene. On their arresting debut single, "Full Circle," the group effortlessly forged a sound that was both rustic and grandiose, incorporating the forest-squatting harmonies of Fleet Foxes, the emotional intensity of Bon Iver and the disquieting atmospherics of Radiohead into its widescreen expanse. That song would help propel their first record, 2012's Dark Days, to platinum status in Canada, and into the charts in several European countries. After touring with indie heavyweights like Mumford & Sons, Of Monsters and Men, and City and Colour, the group returned with 2015's Sun Leads Me On, which entered the Top 5 on the Canadian Billboard albums chart, earning them a Juno nomination for Breakthrough Group of the Year. (And thanks to anthemic singles like "Turn Your Love," the band also made significant inroads into the U.S., with the album cracking the Top 10 on Billboard Heatseekers chart.) But with their third album, A Blemish in the Great Light, Half Moon Run pivot away from their roots-rock foundation to bring their artier instincts to the fore.

    Excellent concert!! 5 Star!!!

by MONKEY on 2023-11-29Algonquin Commons Theatre - Nepean

This was one of the best concerts we both have seen so far ever!! The venue was at The commons theater at Algonquin College. They were very organized letting the fans in for bar set up with drinks and answering all questions from fans about seating etc. The acoustics, lighting , stage set up and the unbelievable talent of Half Moon Run was over the top. They also added 3 violin players and a bass cello quartet to the show for quite a few of their songs. They were all excellent players as well!! Would defiantly see this band again and if you haven't seen them preform live you will have to see them in the future for sure!!!!!!!!LOVED IT!!!!!!!!

This was the last show of their European/North American tour. It met all my expectations ! Half Moon Run is an extremely talented band, exceptional instrument players, great harmonies, topped up with really sincere enthusiasm. The venue was comfortable, clean, unattractive.. First class lighting and sound.

by Michel C on 2023-11-29Algonquin Commons Theatre - Nepean

As always, excellent show. And specialy the complicity with Devon Portielje (the singer) and the audience. In his own city. The guys are amazing composers, and great musicians. We LOVE their music. And we had the chance to met Conner Molander in a store in Ottawa, the next way of the show. He was really kind to talk with us. Thanks!

    Great show! “Electric”

by Liam on 2023-11-28Algonquin Commons Theatre - Nepean

Great show, a friend unfamiliar with the band described it as “electric”. The venue was very nice but was in the middle of nowhere with limited transit options.

    Disappointed

by D For Disappointed on 2023-11-27History - Toronto

The band was great and sounded amazing. However, they did not play their most popular songs (Then Again and Turn Your Love). If I had know that with the departure of Isaac they would not play these songs I would not have purchased my tickets. Very disappointed fan.

    Mind blowingly great concert!

by Phil n Deb on 2023-11-26History - Toronto

Half Moon Run just keeps getting better (even with the loss of one of their founding members)! The concert that we recently attended in Toronto (at the great new venue called “History”) was so musically rich, and the Half Moon Run band members (and the fabulous women string quartet that backs them) were so joyfully engaged with the audience and immersed in their performance that the evening was an absolute musical and performance delight. The sound mix was extraordinary (Hats off to the sound mixers!). The crowd was so into the top notch rock n roll, multi-instrumental genius, and tight harmonies performance that Half Moon Run was giving, that the applause and screaming and whistling was deafening between many of the songs. There was extensive coverage of their latest and probably best album yet, titled “Salt.” Can’t say enough about Half Moon Run. They are under-recognized, and unknown to many, and that is ridiculous. The only plus that is associated with their under-recognition is the joy that we fans get in seeing them in relatively intimate venues (e.g. we’ve seen them in small clubs with only a few hundred people to some moderate sized 2000 person venues). They deserve, and more people need to get to know, the musical delights of Half Moon Run.

Second time seeing them live and they just keep getting better!! Vocals and live music sound just like the studio version, if not better. Billie Marten opened for HMR and she was amazing too.
