Hamilton Leithauser grew up in Washington, D.C., and in 2000 he formed The Walkmen with several other D.C.-area musicians. The band relocated to New York City, quickly becoming a staple of the city's music scene with their raw post-punk sound and Leithauser's unique vocals. Critically and commercially successful albums like Bows + Arrows (2004) and Lisbon (2010) established the band as one of the decade's leading indie acts, resulting in top billing at festivals like Lollapalooza and Reading and Leeds. After the band went on an indefinite hiatus in 2013, Leithauser made his solo debut with 2014's Black Hours.
