  • Wonderful Christmas evening

by A. R. on 2022-12-17National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

Handel’s Messiah was magnificent. Thank you to everyone involved and to the NAC for making great events available. Is there a program whereby those unable to afford, but desiring to experience shows can be supported?

It was an amazing show. It was great to see the next generation coming along. Also, enjoyed the way they share their family life. The orchestra was great too. It is amazing to see how the Leahey's have moved from the Duke of Somerset to the NAC. They deserve all the credit they have received. We need more entertainers like them.

  • Shallow and Uninspired...with a few bright stars.

by Messiahlover on 2009-12-23National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

Having seen the Messiah in many forms and in many places over the years, it is needless to say; a ritual of my family. Below are a few thoughts: The Tenor(Mr. Butterfield) and Soprano (Ms. McGreevy); need to retire from their contrived emotional attachments to such a symbolic event. The Chorus needs inspiration and punch. The Conductor Mr. Pinnock had shallow control over the event. I am not a negative person overall...just dissapointed. The Bass: Mr. Ketelsen...amazing...and I did not feel he even pushed it. The Alto: Ms. Lemieux...thank you for holding the spirit of the event so close! The trumpet: Ms. Donnelly...you gave us shivers...thank you! Merry Christmas.

  • What a Leahy family reunion!!!

    by 4mouse on 2009-12-22National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

My partner and I have been making the Christmas shows an annual event for the past 6 years. This was THE BEST ever!!! It was so lively- feet were continually tapping and so often, hands were clapping in tune to the music. This family is so talented and by the looks of things, there is another generation going to follow in their footsteps. A great show. Please consider bringing them back for a future concert!!

What a fantastic group of musicians. I loved Denise's lovely smile and exquisite voice (and her daughter too). Donnell's fiddle playing...WOW and excellent stage presence and charisma! All of them have so much talent! Bringing the younger generation out on stage was very special...they're really good and cute too :) I thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

  • The reward was a memory for a lifetime...

by Jedo on 2009-12-19National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

We are NAC Christmas regulars and want to express that this was by far one of the most enjoyable and entertaining events we have enjoyed. I was blessed to see Leahy live about 10 years ago and my memory of that event was how fun and entertaining this family is when they perform. This event was every bit as good as I remember them. They love their music, it shows, and the result was a gift to us in a night to remember.

  • Leahy is wonderfully talented!

We really enjoyed the combination of Leahy's lively tunes with the backdrop of the NAC orchestra's beautiful music. They are a very talented family and worth seeing if given the opportunity.

One of the Best shows I have ever seen! Just as good as when I saw them with Shania Twain back in 99'. Would go see them in a heart beat again! Totally Worth It!

  • The Leahy Family is Christmas

by Anonymous on 2009-12-19National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

The Leahy Family is always a joy to watch. Their shows start at a very high energy level and build from there. Their multi-talented performances amaze and entrhrall their audiences from beginning to end. Having the NAC Orchestra and the Ottawa Regional Youth Choir back them up for last night's performance was a bonus that helped to make a good thing even better. If they come back to Ottawa again, Ill be there!

  • Handel's Messiah

A must see at least once in your lifetime. Maestro Pinnock was so very interesting to watch. The leads, chorus and musician ensemble were wonderful. A truly lovely evening.

  • Made Christmas seem like Christmas

by RunRin on 2009-12-17National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

Sometimes we get caught up with the materialism at Christmas time - wrapping presents and getting people things they don't really need. But going to see the Messiah made the season feel more like Christmas. The first act seemed a bit loose, like the singers were getting warmed up. The second and third acts though were pretty well perfect though. I got chills during the last bit of the Amen song and the female trumpeter was flawless with amazing tone. Definitely a treat at Christmas.

  • It is part of celebrating Christmas

by celebrate on 2009-12-17National Arts Centre - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

We go often, but not every year and love Trevor Pinnock's conducting. He is amazing to watch as he plays the harsichord and conducts! The choir was wonderful, as were the soprano and bass soloists. All in all, we enjoyed the performance. It is an exceptional piece of music and presents the story of the Christ, the Messiah, His birth and death, the prophesies and the Biblical history, in a way that never fails to uplift our hearts and help us to remember what we are celebrating at this time of year.
