Perhaps we had too high of expectations but when we went in to take out seats and saw the stage we both thought - really? Its Christmas and this is Handel's Messiah - a tree and other festive decorations would not have gone a miss. Maybe, too, some colourful flooring and not the bare wooden floor. The whole appearance came off looking like a rehearsal! That and the choir and orchestra, albeit very good - especially the orchestra, could have put on some glamour and all been dressed the same and not sitting on what looked like plastic auditorium chairs. At least the featured artists (two soprano's, a tenor and a baritone) dressed for the event! Now we were seated in the next to last row a the back but the acoustics were also not very good, especially for the individual singers. It was an OK evening but if it comes around next year, we won't be going again. Sorry!
We enjoyed being at the NAC. My only criticism is that we couldn't hear the 4 solo vocalists very well. We were only at row Q. They did not project their voices very well, and it was hard to understand what they were saying. The Soprano (Mireille) was much louder and clearer. She had a beautiful presence and seemed to be fully there in the music-she glowed! I know you don't use microphones, but maybe there is some way to improve the balance. The choir was amazing as was the orchestra.
Absolutely beautiful- sound was great. The soprano and bass soloists left me wide-eyed. I was sad to see it end but I plan to go again next year.
It was an amazing experience. The acustics were fantastic. From the orchestra, the choir, to the 4 talented Oprah singers. Will definitely return next year, abd make it a new Christmas tradition.
Although the first part was a bit subdued the orchestra and singers in the second part were on fire. The audience was vibrating with delight and a few us could be caught humming joyfully. Very talented musicians and the passionate engagement of the conductor was a real pleasure to watch. Bravo!
We enjoyed it very much. The chorus was in great voice, and the first trumpet was amazing.
Beautiful and moving. The orchestra, choir, and soloists put on an impeccable show. A beautiful venue as well. Bravissimo!
My friend and I really enjoyed the production. She’s a trained vocalist and really enjoyed it.
In these troubled times, to attend (in person) the December 14, 2022 performance of Handel’s Messiah with vocal soloists, the Cantata Singers and the Capital ChamberChoir in full voice, was uplifting and inspirational. Hats off to the NAC Orchestra led by Patrick Dupré Quigley and all involved in this extraordinary production. The lengthy standing ovation was well-deserved!
