i made the best of it but was definitely a bit of a letdown

by luca ^_^ on 2024-04-09UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - Vancouver

Merch was crazy understocked for the amount of people attending and subsequently it sold out wayyy too fast for anybody to get anything. Setlist was kind of mid but there were also some bangers. Also of course the fact that it was an LED screen rather than a hologram and the screen did not blend with the stage at all😭 On the good side it did have a fun atmosphere when popular/upbeat songs came on but the crowd was kinda dead half the time because again the setlist was kinda mid. but i still liked it, i probably wouldnt go again though for the ridiculous price. I really hope they manage it better next time because this was a bit of a disappointment

Great Live Music and Community, but...

by Nick on 2024-04-08UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - Vancouver

I had an overall amazing time enjoying the music as this was the first chance to see Miku in person. However, some management issues have kind of soured parts of the experience. The main issue for me was the difficulty in acquiring the merch, the preorders were a nightmare as the most sought after item -the penlights were nabbed so quickly that they were sold out before half an hour had passed. This left us with the only option to line up the day of at the merch line to pick one up, while I was early enough to purchase one, I know of many who attended who were not as lucky. With the penlights/glowsticks being such an important souvenir, I think management should have expected the demand and planned accordingly. The secondary issue for me was that Miku was not a hologram as she was in previous tours from watching previous recorded performances . This time she was on an LED Screen, the quality of the screen was fine and from where I was seated it didn't bother me all that much, but at certain points in the performance the backlighting made it abundantly clear that Miku was in this rectangular screen, which broke immersion. While the visuals of a live performance to me aren't paramount to be, this was still a let-down nonetheless. If they had decided to change the way the visuals were going to be displayed, this should have been clearly communicated with the fans, as it is a major departure from previous events. Overall, I would still recommend the show to those who really enjoy Hatsune Miku's (and other CFM Vocaloids) music. The setlist was good and live performers did a spectacular job. It was also a great experience seeing everyone come out to enjoy the performance, but I know a fair lot of people who were severely let down by some of the flaws. I believe for the price, those who are upset deserve to voice their dissatisfaction. I'm not entirely sure if I would attend another Miku Expo if those in charge don't properly communicate with all the fans about what happened this year. I wish those who have already bought tickets make the most of their time, it was still a good show.

    Downscaled Event

by Philip on 2024-04-08UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - Vancouver

This was my first Vocaloid concert and the turnout was amazing. So many passionate fans came out with lots of costumes and decorations on. The crowd was very respectful, there was no pushing or anything and everyone tried to make sure the people around them got a good view. The live band was exceptional and really brought a lot of energy and talent. The show itself felt like a down-scaled version of the Vocaloid concerts we have come to expect. There was no hologram projection this time. The organizers opted for a rather small LED screen. This really hurt the whole experience and removed a lot of the immersion. Additionally, the vocals sounded a bit shrill/distorted, it was hard to hear the lyrics even in the English songs. Additionally, the merch sold through long before most people would normally arrive to the venue. Even with VIP tickets and advanced entry, there was no additional merch or glow sticks available inside the venue. I hope the money made from this tour is invested into a better experience for future tours. I'm glad I got to attend an event with fellow fans and hope to see improvements with future events. We can do better and have done better in the past.

    Great show

by Ratty on 2024-04-07UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - Vancouver

I thought it was an excellent show and experience. The merch line was a bit of a circus. It was our first Miku show and it was awesome. Don’t listen to the haters.

    No holograms

by Nathan on 2024-04-07UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - Vancouver

Instead of holograms, what we got was an ordinary LED screen. Quite disappointing!

    Totally surprising concert experience

by MiaRia on 2024-04-07UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - Vancouver

I had my misgivings. I know vocaloid because of my daughter but still, an AI concert? I’ll tell you this; the music was surprisingly good, a few real bangers tbh. The band was exceptional and it’s why the concert works. The live music from the band was just terrific. The hologram was exceptional and there were moments I forgot it was a fictional singer. If you just go for the experience in the audience you will get your moneys worth. But it’s a proper concert and well worth checking out. I’m not a fan of AI at all but this is an exceptional experience with AI, with all the heart that you need from an artist

    HAD A GREAT TIME

by LIAM on 2024-04-07UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - Vancouver

I really appreciated that the parking was well laid out especially having a wheelchair. The staff was helpful and made sure that it was as accessible as it could be. Everyone was friendly and it was the most stress free concert experience that i have had

    Enjoyable but poorly thought-out set

by Moofey on 2024-04-07UBC - Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre - Vancouver

This is based on me attending the Vancouver show; The first in the tour, having never gone to a show like this before but with knowledge on how previous North American tours have turned out. Me attending a Miku Expo concert was a long time coming given that I'm an OG Miku/VOCALOID follower, and while the concert was fun and enjoyable, the presentation didn't live up to the expectation of many people that went in with expectations with how each of the characters would be portrayed and projected on-stage. Whereas previous concerts would have models of the six featured characters projected onto a glass screen on-stage, those that attended the two shows that have been performed so far on this tour as of this review were presented with an LED screen instead. The screen itself isn't the dealbreaker that many people say it is, as it presents an opportunity for slightly wider viewing angles, crisper images and less interference from other light sources, but what ruined the immersion and the illusion of a CGI character running across the stage was that they made no attempt to blend the screen into the set, mostly by designing a set that indiscriminately shone lights at, behind, or around it, making it feel less like a concert and more like a glorified Hatsune Miku YouTube watch party with live music. The set designers made no attempt to emulate the illusion seen at past concerts, including recent ones overseas that had been run with LED screens itself. The size of the screen becomes an issue, too, as it seems that the screen they are using will be the same size whether it be some of the very small venues this tour will be playing at in Texas, to the full-size NHL arena that they'll be playing in when they reach Jersey. Aside from that, the live renditions of songs from the 15 or so artists that had their music featured in this show were well thought out and the band looked like they were enjoying themselves as well. The show wasn't a write-off all because of the poorly thought-out set; Hearing many popular songs over the years performed live is a draw in itself, but many die-hard Miku/VOCALOID fans are going to be extremely disappointed in just how poorly integrated their favorite characters are within this set.
