    Hawksley rocked Cowtown...again

by sheilag on 2009-07-13Flames Central - Calgary

Hawksley does not cease to put on a great show. This was the fourth time I have seen him and he is by far one of the best Canadian performers. He is able to engage the crowd with his stories and I love how he is really playful with his songs by incorporating other songs.

Hawksley Workman in a perfect venue

by ILIVEINEDMONTON on 2009-07-13Flames Central - Calgary

The concert was excellent, everything about it was great and it was the most artist friendly venue that I have seen Hawksley in. His natural rapport with the audience is really heightened in the intimate and friendly atmosphere of Flames Central. I am very impressed with Hawksley but also Calgary and Flames Central, I will follow the listings carefully and come down to see concerts there whenever I can.

    Hawksley at Flames Central

by nielsensmith on 2009-07-13Flames Central - Calgary

Flames Central is a terrible venue with aweful accoustics. After waiting over 2 hours, the opening act "Library Voices" finally came on. They were great! Hawksley played a really great and long show, but I saw him at Mac Hall in February and Edmonton Folk Fest last year, and the shows were very similar. I wish he would've changed it up a bit. All in all, a good time.

    Hawksley Workman is brilliant

by Ptarmigan on 2009-07-13Flames Central - Calgary

Ryan Corrigan aka Hawksley Workman and the band put on a fantastic show. Great sounds! Ryan is part of a unique class of Canadian musicians: he bares his soul in a live setting and really connects with the audience. A true musician.

    Hawksley is a real showman!

by KatieP on 2009-07-13Flames Central - Calgary

Unfortunately, Flames Central sucks! Let's just get people in here to stand/sit around for hours so we can sell them drinks; the show was obviously secondary to them. Doors open at 8 means 8:30, the opening act didn't hit the stage until 10pm; then another 40 minutes once they were done to wait for Hawksley. He is very much an entertainer, and seems to enjoy himself on stage; I think he may have found the crowd more enthusiastic if we hadn't spent so much time waiting around. I attended with my son and his girlfriend, and they felt the same. We all really enjoyed the show, and would definitely go to see Hawksley again; but I don't know if we'd go back to Flames Central. For both the opening and main acts, the music often drowned out the lyrics, which is a shame.

    Hawksley was amazing

    by Chappell11 on 2009-07-13Flames Central - Calgary

The show was just simply put uncanny. Between the intimate setting the sound in the venue and the talent onstage one couldnt ask for a better show. The Library voices did a phenominal job as the opening act. After their stellar performance the stage was set for one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Hawksley was just like the venue, intimate. Starting with " We will still need a song " from the lover fighter album, he continued through his entire body of work. Definately the best concert of the year.

    Hawksley: rockin' as always

by Birdiebird on 2009-07-12Flames Central - Calgary

Hawksley was AMAZING. As ramblingly talented and hilarious as always, his music rocked, his show was incredible, and his rappor with the audience great. Only complaint: he only came on at 11:30, waaay too late!

Hawksley Workman is a lively and witty entertainer. The venue was definitely not my favorite.

If only my feet didn't hurt!

by Crdimples on 2009-07-12Flames Central - Calgary

So I hate to start on a bad point BUT the ticketmaster site said the doors opened at 7 and the event started at 9. So being a good little fan that I am I went early (6:00) to get in line...only to find out the doors didn't open until 8 and the show didn't start till 9. I then overheard the crew talking about how Hawksley wasn't going on until 10:30. Well the opening act didn't start until around 10. They're sound wasn't set right and you couldn't hear any of the higher ends of the music. They only said the bands name once and no one could hear it. They didn't introduce themselves and the saxophone player was a bit of show off. If it hadn't felt contrived his "awesome" saxophone juggling would have been sweet. They're headman was a real piece of something great. I think they're recorded stuff is probably sweet. So now we've been standing since 6 and it's after 11 and Hawksley finally takes the stage. I love him so it was worth it but by half way through my back and feet hurt so bad that I couldn't fully enjoy the brilliance before me. I have NEVER been disappointed with Hawksley's performance. Canada is truly blessed to have such talent to call our own. Half the yeehaw's in Flames Central didn't appreciate the beauty of 'No Beggining' enough to stop they're gabbering and let the moment just sit and sink. Dr. Workman, as he referred to himself, is the only artist I've seen that has the balls to have an actual moment on stage. Let everything just die down and be still. Share a moment for a second. It doesn't have to be rock rock rock for two solid hours. Hawksley seems very visceral and I assume everyshow is different depending on where his deep and complicated mind goes. You can see him just letting things flow where they want to. It makes for a real connected show that doesn't feel too calculated and reproduced. I've seen Hawksely Workman 5 times in Calgary now and I would rate this the 2 best next to the Jack Singer concert, just based on his performance...not the unfortunate circumstances.
