HAYDEN IN CONCERT:
Alt-folk troubadour Hayden has been wearing his heart on his sleeve since his earliest recordings in the '90s and, and he's steadily won over a devoted legion of fans with his evocative and emotional songwriting. At his live shows he treats ticket buyers to a broad spectrum of styles – one minute he's kicking out ragged grunge rock with his talented backing band and the next he's offering up heartbreaking folk with nothing but an acoustic guitar and harmonica. At both extremes of his sound, the frontman's gravelly baritone brings out the raw emotional power of favorites like "Trees Lounge," "No Happy Birthday," and the shambolic epic "Dynamite Walls." Hayden's stirring sentiments become even more palpable during his performances as he delights longtime fans and newcomers alike with the unrestrained passion he injects into his masterful sets.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Paul Hayden Desser's music career started off with a bang when he won CFNY-FM's songwriting competition in 1993 with his song "Take". Although he didn't actually sing on the track, he debuted his trademark gruff vocals a few years later on the celebrated 1995 album Everything I Long For. Hayden achieved greater notoriety the following year when he played both nights of Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit and contributed the theme song to Steve Buscemi's film Trees Lounge. Following his headlining tour in support of 1998's The Closer I Get, the singer kept a low profile and opted for brief tours that would allow him to focus more on recording. Despite Hayden's preference for keeping out of the public eye, fans and critics alike helped spread word about efforts like Elk-Lake Serenade (2004) and Us Alone (2013). Hayden's rare live performances remain a special treat for fans, taking his poignant sound to new emotional heights.

Great voice! Great interaction with the crowd. A mix of old and new songs. Could not have asked for more.
Hayden is a cant miss performer live. I had seen him twice before this one, and they were great, and I decided that I will try to see him every chance I get. In this show he played the entire 'Everything I long for album' front to back - A memorable Canadian album that jump started his career. As always with Hayden, they are moving and thoughtful songs, that reach from deep inside himself. Between songs, while he was tuning his guitar, he took questions from the audience about things from the album, his songs, their meaning, his career. His quick wry wit was apparent with every reply. Basically, hes hilarious. He did an encore of many of his later songs - which are also memorable (if you stopped listening after 'everything i long for', think again, he has many amazing albums, that you wont, for whatever errant programming reason, hear on the radio). In short, Hayden is a must see, and to me tied for the best live canadian act over the last 20 years with Tom Wilson. Great show as always.
Great Q&As, audience participation, most of EILF plus others and a couple covers.
I was glad to see Hayden again in Toronto. It was a really solid 90 minute set of old and new songs that really showcased his immense talent. His interaction with the audience made the show feel more intimate in his understated way. Wayne Petti was a nice addition to several songs.
This is the third time this year alone that I see Hayden play and I never get sick of seeing him perform. He's just amazing.
As usual, Hayden and his band put on a wonderful show. It had been approx. 5 years since his last visit to Winnipeg, but as they say, "absence makes the heart grow fonder". I think you appreciate the artist more if you don't get to see them as often. He had two fantastic musicians playing with him on stage and the three of them meld together perfectly. Taylor Knox is great on the drums!
One of the best concerts I have seen in a while. Hayden played many of his best songs from all of his albums. Hayden was also his funny, entertaining self and told a few funny stories. The Rio was a cool venue as well. Last time Hayden was here was 4 years ago and he definitely made up for it. Fans of Hayden need to see him live in concert.
Great venue. Hayden & Lou were fantastic. Good sound.
So great! Wonderful venue, I would see anything at the Rio.
