Heaven and Hell-still the Kings of Metal

by audioguy on 2009-08-09UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

A few bugs in the gear (handled with a good laugh from the band) but the performance was incredible. Even after this many years of making music, the guys showed why they are still the top artists in the genre they created, Metal. The band performed with great enthusiasm in spite of a smaller crowd than they are perhaps used to playing in front of. My only disappointment was that they couldn't play ALL their best songs, as they have written so many that for every incredible song they play they have to leave out another or the show would span several hours. The set featured material from the first new album they have done in many years, which proved that the band still have the ability to create magical music together.

    short but sweet

by artood2 on 2009-08-08UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

Black Sabbath err Heaven and Hell put on a metal clinic last night. It was short at around 90 minutes but Dio can still rock the house. Tony I what can you say so many notes from so little movement he is a master. Geezer is anything but. Vinnie was solid on the drums. Apart from one annoying instance of static due to a loose connection the sound was bang on., the opener Coheed & Cambria did well in their allotted time throwing in a nice Iron Maidne cover.

    Legends of Metal

by Rayman on 2009-08-08UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

I feel honored and privledged to have seen some true legends of metal in action. Tonni Iommi truely looked like he loves his job even after all these years. Dio's pipes never sounded better. The opening act, Coheed & Cambria, really did a great job setting the stage for Heaven and Hell. Amazing concert despite the small scale of the stage and pyrotechniques. Really the talent displayed by the musicians sold the show.

    Coheed Saves the Day.

by Nelzon on 2009-08-08UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

Iommi still has the speed, but a little lacking on the creativity. Dio's voice is struggling in some parts, but he still holds it together nicely. Great if you want to re-live the band's songs, but for a first timer it was a little monotonous by the end. Coheed, however was absolutely awesome. These guys hold it up 100% on stage, and even go beyond their recorded versions. My only regret is that coheed only played for an hour.

    The real Black Sabbath

by TheRealZeus on 2009-08-08UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

I have always said that Dio put the "Black" in Black Sabbath. This show proved it once again. Ronnie James Dio, a 67 year old man delivered a stellar performance with more energy than half of the fans in attendance. Durring "Die Young" it finally occured to me that the true meaning of the song is not about dying at an early age. Rather it is about being young until the day you die. May Ronnie, Vinnie, Geezer, and Tony live long and die young!

Heaven and Hell, Heavy, Heavy Metal at it's Best

by Python46 on 2009-08-08UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

These Classic Stars professionally accomplished an awsome show. Dio's voice I thought was perfect, Tony played phenonemally, Geezer slapped his Base with emotion as Vinnie Hammered the Skins almost off the stage during his Solo. I Hope they come back for another Show , But at GM Place or similar venue where some Spirits can be provided to make it an all around night on the town. Fans had come from all over ,even from the U.S. The few technical difficulties, feedback, Static (possible blown speaker), and runaway fog machine did not hurt the perfamance . I need more Metal, Come Back Soon.

    Dio is very animated

by Drummerboy1 on 2009-08-08UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

Concert was good. My girlfriend and I enjoyed Dio's audience connection. His powerful voice is a real driving force. He is very animated which keeps your eyes upon him. Tony Iomi would always send out a suttle smirk and played very well. The bassist played very well, but to me, had no stage presence. I don't think he ever really moved. Vinny Apice was ok. For a drummer of his stature, I thought he would have put on a better solo. His drum kit setup was amusing and so he kept me interested in watching as he stood up and moved around. It was a good concert but not a great one. It was a bit short. I had really hoped with Dio's Rainbow popularity, he would have played a few select tunes. I know that would have really got the crowd going and it would have made for a longer concert. I would recommend it to a first timer but I would not go see the same song list again.

    Heaven & Hell Rocks Vancouver!

by Moggio on 2009-08-08UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

Well, to start...it could've been better but it was a great show nonetheless. The sound was decent but not excellent. And on the '07 reunion tour, H&H played for nearly 2 hours. Tonight, they played for only 90 minutes...and missed classics like, Turn Up The Night, Voodoo & The Sign Of The Southern Cross (three of my favourites). However, the material they did play was very well executed and Iommi was on FIRE! Amazingly passionate solos! And as usual, Dio was very talkative and extremely appreciative of the fan support throughout the years. Two funny incidents happened. When five of smoke machines shot up in the air, the middle one didn't stop until there was no more smoke left! So Dio wandered over to it and said, "...let's give a round of applause for this machine..." LOL! And near the end of Follow The Tears, the right sound system stack above starting crackling and you could see the roadies scrambling to fix it ASAP, which they did. It was a bit odd for them to give Appice a drum solo since the show was somewhat short but at the same time, it was very cool to see. So, I did enjoy the show overall.

    heaven and hell ubc

by wcrew45 on 2009-08-08UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

too bad vancouver is saturated with too many shows coming into town all within a 6 week period...there should have been more people at the show. ronnie, tony ,geezer and vinnie put on a great show . had to deal with a couple of spinal tap moments and handled it with great sense of humour. opening act was pretty good (Cousin It was playing guitar) but should have been a stronger headliner to help with all the empty seats.

    Mesmerizing

by meloman002 on 2009-08-08UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

Overall, it was a good concert. However,Heaven and Hell's set was a bit too short, and the break was actually too long. That's why I'm giving it 4 stars. But the songs were good, although they could have played a few from "Mob rules" as well, if they played a couple from "Dehumanizer". "Coheed and Cambria" rocked too.

    Letdown

by sabbathfan on 2009-08-08UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

-Sound quality was TERRIBLE. Couldn't hear Iommi properly AT ALL, or Butler. -Performance was too short. -Lack of crowd and band enthusiasm. -Not worth $90. -The "Floor" was just a bunch of seats lined up beside each other, no moshing or real headbanging possible. -LAME movie clips on background screen. I was expecting way more out of this world famous band than was put out, I was severely disappointed and definitely feel it was a waste of money. Came all the way out from Victoria to see them.

    Heaven and Hell was fantastic

by Faethor39 on 2009-08-08UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

Heaven and Hell put on an excellent show. Ronnie James Dio on vocals, at 66 + years of age was unbelievable and Iommi, Butler and Appice provided the signature Sabbath sound that is unparalleled by any other. Even with the small crowd, which appeared to be made up of "real" fans who showed their appreciation at every chance, Heaven and Hell worked hard and gave those fans a terrific show. Arguably, one of the better concerts of the year. Don't miss it, you will be glad you saw these legendary musicians performing far beyond expectations. Expect to hear fantastic renditions of "I, Die Young, Heaven and Hell, Time Machine, Children of the Sea, Neon Nights, Bible Black and more" Once again. Awesome. If ever you were a fan of Dio or Black Sabbath...this is a must see concert! As a foot note, don't miss the opening act Coheed and Cambria. A very good progressive melodic metal act worth checking out. Faethor

Heaven & Hell Tour Opener - Vancouver

by F1fan56 on 2009-08-08UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

Having missed the H&H show with Megadeth a couple of years ago and since I had not seen Dio with Iommi since 1981 I was looking forward to an evening of classic metal. The mature rockers didn't disappoint, as Dio's voice was in fine form and Iommi laid out slab after slab of heavy riffs. Nobody sounds like Tony Iommi and his tone is still thick and godlike. Geezer and Vinny provided a solid foundation throughout and Butler in particular played extremely well. I detected a bit of rustiness in Appice's drum solo and in some parts of Iommi's rhythm guitar but that is getting very picky. After a few gigs I'm sure it will all smooth out. After all, these guys are in their sixties playing material they composed in their thirtes. Other less positive issues: the lack of an MC to introduce the bands was mystifying. No one announced the supporting act Coheed and Cambria and I had no idea who they were until after their set. Unfortunately the Thunderbird Arena was only half full and I have rarely seen such an obvious security presence. What were they expecting from 2500 aging fans - a riot? Last summer 12,000 raucous Iron Maiden fans enjoyed a great show and drank beer without a problem. But some pompous twits decided metal fans can't be trusted therefore no beer was on sale.

    Calm cool collected and Heavy

by bigfish on 2009-08-08UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

Iommi is the master of the metal world. Bulter's pounding base makes playing the instrument cool. Vinny is a huge talent. Dio has the perfect voice and feel for this dark and Heavy coolness.

Heaven & Hell is as classic as it gets!

by bucktronner on 2009-08-08UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

When you combine this group of musicians you are guaranteed to get a classic metal show. Thunderbird Arena in Vancouver BC was the first stop for the new Heaven & Hell tour. Being the first show of the tour, it took a few songs and some tweaking at the sound board to get the mics and guitars sounding correct. There were also a few minor glitches with stage props like the smoke machines, but these veterans played through it all with style and grace. Tony Iommi was the reason I was in the house that night. A chance to hear his signature guitar tone live and up close was a dream come true, he is so mellow and smooth, it's truly amazing. Iommi's guitar licks crushed as he played with a smile on his face the whole show, while giving nods of appreciation to the crowd. Of course Dio is Dio... and gave a vocal performance that is unique with a style that is unmatched by any other front man. Geezer bass kept the bottom end shaking and Vinny's beats held it all together. A great performance that I will always remember. Thanks for the rockin' good time!

    Heaven and Hell was great

by Derekthegrey on 2009-08-08UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

Have never seen Dio and the boys, but an awesome display of heavy metal rock. Geezer continues to lay down the solid Sabboth licks that makes the music. Tommy Iomme was fantastic just wish I was a little closer to get one of his picks. But Dio, a really great front man and even a better singer than I thought. Dio is such a perfect fit the rest of the band I can see why the band doesn't give up on their music. the combination of the musical elements simply...works. Fantastic stage. Really liked the look of the "goth" gargoyles, globes held by statue hands and the chain fences magically illuminated by the lighting. In all an entertaining evening. Nice job boys.

by Shark99 on 2009-08-08UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

Ronnie was fantastic, tons of energy and sounded strong. I've never seen Tony before this and he did not disappoint. Vinny and butler pounded it out all night as well. Super strong police presence put a bit of a downer on the crowd,

    timeless rockers don't disappoint!!!

by bleedingears on 2009-08-08UBC THUNDERBIRD ARENA - Vancouver

Whether it's Heaven and Hell or Black Sabbath, whatever you want to call them, you can't deny these timeless rock legends! Tony 'the riff-master' Iommi, and 'bleeding fingers' Geezer Butler can still blow away musicians one third their age! Throw in one of the most impressive drum sets you've ever seen (and a guy who can hit'em up real good) and the demon elf Dio, and you've got one hell of a good show! Well done gentlemen, well done.
