Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Live in Concert

Jason Isbell was born into a musical family in Green Hill, Alabama, in 1979. His grandfather and uncle taught him to play various musical instruments, and the young musician started playing the mandolin when he was just 6. Destined for a life in the spotlight, he joined the Drive-By Truckers in 2001 at the age of 22. Isbell was a member of the Drive-By Truckers for six years before cutting out for a solo career. He released his first solo album, Sirens of the Ditch, in 2007. Some of his most notable work began when he assembled a group of musicians that would become known as The 400 Unit. The group consists of Sadler Vaden  of Drivin' N Cryin' on guitar, Jimbo Hart on bass, Derry deBorja on keyboards and accordion, Chad Gamble on drums and Isbell's wife Amanda Shires on fiddle. The 400 Unit is playfully named after the psychiatric ward of Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama. Isbell and the band's first collaboration resulted in the release of the self-titled album Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit in 2009. In 2011, the collaboration continued with the release of Here We Rest. The track "Alabama Pines" was named Song of the Year at the 2012 Americana Music Awards. The Nashville Sound was released in 2017, winning the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album, with Isbell winning an additional Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song. In 2020, the group released Reunions, with the song "Be Afraid" hitting No. 5 on the Adult Alternative Songs chart. During the November 2020 election, Isbell announced he would make a charity album if Joe Biden won the state of Georgia. When this came to pass, Isbell worked to release the cover album Georgia Blue the following year. The album was a collaboration by various artists, and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit contributed a cover of the Metallica song "Sad But True." Isbell has won four Grammy Awards between 2001 and 2007.

    Slick Rockin

    by D. D. on 2023-03-08Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

I've seen Isbell and the 400 unit more than a dozen times over the years and this is the most polished they've ever been. I kinda prefer them louder and rougher, but there is no denying their virtuosity. Kathleen Edwards was the perfect SG and I wish she had more stage time. Fabulous show all round.

One of the Best Concert I've Ever Seen!

by Tim on 2023-03-08Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

What a night. When you want to see the opener, Kathleen Edwards, as much as the main act, it's a win. Isbell was fantastic! Great show, really tight group and....well, it's Jason Isbell. Seen a lot of shows and this one was one of the most rewarding!

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Queen E

by PropGuy72 on 2023-03-08Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

Kitty The Fool and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit put on a show for the ages. The show was worth all the Covid cancellations of his previously scheduled Vancouver Concerts. Both bands put on slide guitar lessons that were epic in scale. Jason's songs are like mini Americana Novels. It was a five star sight and sound experience.

by Jon Bontje on 2023-03-06Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Spare no expense, go see Jason Isbell. Not that the tickets are unreasonable by any means. This show dazzled every single person in the auditorium. The Jubilee is a wonderful venue.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit produce 50,000 Watts of entert

by breael on 2023-03-05Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

March second, saw Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit take centre stage at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. With a happy hello to the crowd, they launched into 24 Frames, and spent the next couple of hours delivering what seemed to be hit after hit. Midway through Jason paused and gave effusive praise for the opening act: Kathleen Edwards. He even said that she has long been one of his favourite singers ever. She had demonstrated that it was easy to see why. I believe that I have seen her virtually every time she has been in Dirt City, and March/02’s show was perhaps her best! For us music fans, life was good…back to Jason now and, those who enjoy a bit of guitar shredding…Oy Vay! Haven’t seen that much shredding since I worked in a BBQ joint! Both Kathleen’s band and Jason with Sadler Vaden of the 400 Unit wear on fire all night long, shooting lightning bolts of music throughout the room. All in all; a night to remember for a long time

    Amazing moments

by G. W. on 2023-03-05Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

There were a few moments in this performance where the auditorium was absolutely silent- mesmerized by Jason Isbell's haunting music and lyrics that touched your soul- this is what I will remember. Would have loved to see Amanda Shires with the 400 Unit.

    J. Isbell & L. Edwards 2023 concert

by Sandy W. on 2023-03-05Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Great concert from both artists! It was questionable who the headliner really was though...maybe both artists. I'm a big Kathleen Edwards fan and my Canadian bias is probably showing. She's a wonderful singer songwriter and having guitarist Colin Cripps accompany her was doubly amazing!

The only word I can think of is AMAZING!

by Double L on 2023-03-05Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

The concert was on time, the opening act (Kathleen Edwards and her ensemble) were great and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit were amazing with the band being very ‘tight’; all of them very gifted. The music was a great mixture of genres, tempo, old favourites and a new one from his upcoming album. Of course the lyrics are so good….story-telling so I can definitely understand some comparing him to Bob Dylan. The musical interludes in many of the songs were outstanding! I saw this group 7-8 years ago and they have only gotten better. My only criticism was the use of spotlights behind the stage that were directed out at the audience. At times it was blinding and we could not see anything or anyone on stage. But this is easily corrected…..otherwise a wonderful evening.

    They were fine.

by Sandyno on 2023-03-05Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

The warm up bands lead singer thought she could bond with the audience by using the term fuckin' a lot - it got a bit tiresome. Jason and his band were originally vaccine nazi's - I hope they've grown out of that. They couldn't have known at the time how ineffective the vaccines were. The performance didn't rate as high with me as the performance of the Deep South. They put on a great show. I'm really looking forward to the Nitty Gritty Dirt band, saw them before at the Jube. Best, most professional, band in the world!

Great Concert, 1st Time Seeing JI & 400 Live

by RP on 2023-03-05Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Really enjoyed the whole show. Kathleen Edwards was great as the warmup band, she is much punchier in her delivery then I expected, sound quality was OK but not wonderful. Jason Isbell band is amazing and sound was terrific in the Jube, impressed by the diversity of songs and sounds, Jason is very accomplished on guitar and I was impressed by his riffs and sound, Jason's voice is clear and has a unique tone and quality. Their diverse catalogue of great tunes made for a great night. Highly recommend, Thanks JI and the band!

    The best concert & performer

by Cassandra on 2023-03-05Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Not only was the venue beautiful, comfortable and convenient… everything from the parking to the washrooms was seriously amazing. And don’t even get me started on the performance, Jason Isbell sounded so phenomenal, played all the best songs, but he made it so fun! The acoustics were incredible and he was so talented, even his band had a spotlight! I loved every minute of it.

    A wonderful evening

by Penman on 2019-07-09The Avalon Ballroom Theatre At Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort - Niagara Falls

Jason Isbell is such a songwriting talent and I have wanted to see him and his 400 Unit for quite a while. They put on a tight little show and were wonderful to see live. Bonus having his wife Amanda’s beautiful voice and fiddle with them as well. Set was only about 13 songs though and I would have loved to hear more. (Saw his ok comrades , Drive By Truckers, the night before and they played a whopping 28 song set)
