Didn't know the story as well as I should have going in. But... The singing...and the DANCING!!!!!....were amazing!
How can you not like the Music?... but The "updated" cast was not required... specifically the Biker dude "Ponceaus Pilot", the cast in Nike sneakers and sweats, the Flamboyantly gay King Herod... and Jesus carrying a guitar often without using it. Fortunately, they didn't have the cast using Iphones. Did you forget what made it great 50 years ago? Dramatic scenes... King Herod was to be feared, not laughed at. Great cast voices, but Judas had trouble getting the lyrics out on 1 song as the tempo was faster than original.
- orchestra overwhelmed the singers. Background music should be far more subtle. Many of the songs could even be acapella. - although the singers were powerful, the modern interpretations of the songs were diluted by attempts at nuancing the tones. - the show was rushed. Should be room for silence between scenes. - lazy stage management - same set for all scenes. - for the price, the show is capitalizing on nostalgia of the original. - I came home to watch the original version to remind myself of why it was such great entertainment.
Compared to my memories of this musical/rock opera from the 1970s, many performances were stellar. Listening to the songs presented I was happily surprised to enjoy them so much 50 years later.
Excellent job everyone. 100% enjoyed, you all really delivered a super tar of a production!
My daughter and I attended the Jesus Christ Superstar performance on Saturday night in Vancouver. It was just wonderful! The caliber of singing, dancing, acting, sets were top notch! Really well worth the money.
Continued from previous review. I just found out we may have see a few understudies and Jesus was one. We went on Nov 18/22 Vancouver. Not a great show
I had some high expectations for this production however it was a big fail for me. The only saving grace was the man who played Judas. Jesus’ voice was just too high and absolutely no passion in his voice.. that was so disappointing. He was not Jesus at all! Mary had a nice voice but didn’t connect one bit to the character. The lead dancer just looked like she was having spasms. The use of the microphone took so much away. I felt like the singers were “singing” too much and really not giving enough emotion to their characters. Why not use head mics instead? It was just so disappointing. The direction was not good at all.
I thought it was a complete miss. The licence taken to make it a modern production made it impossible to figure out who was who. The use of hand held mics instead of headsets was distracting and weird at times. The set was boring and never changed. At times it seemed the playrs had to move around the stage to kill time. Although th singers had good voices, the poor sound quality made it hard to understand the lyrics and came across as screachy at times. Not worth the $$$.
Vocals were excellent.Cords of microphones were a huge distraction. Could improve on spacing for group dances. View from other parts of theatre were bad. JC could have been positioned mid stage when Mary Magdalene was singing to him. Thank you!
The singing was just like the original soundtrack! I liked not having an intermission - it kept the intensity going.
I saw Jesus Christ Superstar twice on stage in the 70’s and again in the 2000’s. As well I saw the movie twice and pretty well wore out my album! However this production was a marvel! I loved the choreography and the set design. The music and vocals warmed my heart. Thank you!
We thoroughly enjoyed this show from the opening number to the end. The scenery was very well designed, and worked well for the actors. The only disappointment was that the cast did not sing a finale after taking a standing ovation. This would have left the audience with a high before they departed the theatre.
Perhaps it was because the story was depicting a certain time period, but I found the costumes to be flat and dull and that reduced the visual experience for me. Also the delivery of some of the songs was not to my liking.
The appearances of the mob leader dancing on her own was a great accent throughout. I thought Jesus’ voice lacked gravitas, however. Jesus being beaten by the angels in JC Superstar song was unexpected.
Jesus Christ Superstar is one of my favorite musicals of all time. This was a contemporary take on the original classic which I was unaware of. The music was still enjoyable and the actors did a phenomenal performance.
Amazing show of song, dance and acting. Powerful, beautiful, stunning, performance.
The venue, acting, and energy of the performers was top notch. The acoustics though? Could only hear every third word being sung. People in my row also complained of the same thing, so it wasn't just me. I've been to the QE Theater before and the audio in prior settings has been stellar, not sure what happened this time around. Maybe the producers brought their own gear, was terrible.
I had seen Jesus Christ Superstar when I was a child when it first came out years ago. It had made a strong impression on me, especially the music. To say that I was disappointed is an understatement. Certainly I expect the show to change, but they changed the music and lyrics as well. There was also at least one song missing as well, and I loathed the way the show ended. I didn't know it was over beyond the fact that that music had stopped. I had such high expectations and had been looking forward to seeing this show for weeks. Very sorry now that I even went.
