About
Despite his brief career (which spanned a scant four years), Jimi Hendrix (1942 – 1970), is considered one of the most important and influential musicians in rock music. His electrifying guitar playing technique helped define the sound of the late ‘60s, and his most famous album, Electric Ladyland, went to #1 on the charts. At the time of his death, Hendrix was the current highest-paid concert act, and his legendary headlining appearance at Woodstock is widely seen as one of the best live stage performances ever captured on film.
Born James Marshall Hendrix in Seattle, Washington, Jimi Hendrix first taught himself to play guitar after finding an old one-string ukulele in a trash bin. After a stint in the Army, Hendrix became a session and touring guitarist, backing up the likes of the Isley Brothers and Little Richard. By 1966, he was a struggling musician on the New York club scene when he was spotted by Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones. Richards’ girlfriend introduced Hendrix to Chas Chandler of the Animals, by then a band manager wanting to form a new group. Taken with Hendrix’s talent, Chandler recruited Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell; the three became known as The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Instantly successful on the London club scene, they created a frenzy to obtain tickets to their intimate live shows. The Experience soon grew to international fame, thrilling audiences with their lengthy instrumental jams. Their best-known hits include “Are You Experienced,” “Purple Haze,” “Voodoo Child,” “Foxy Lady,” and the Bob Dylan cover “All Along the Watchtower.” The Jimi Hendrix Experience was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and still their music continues to find and amaze new audiences.
