KID N’ PLAY IN CONCERT:

In the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, Kid ‘n Play went from upstart NYC hip hop duo to household name thanks to their fresh style, outsized personalities, and a string of feel-good hits like “Fun House”, “Ain’t Gonna Hurt Nobody”, and “Rollin’ with Kid n’ Play”. As chart success gave way to silver screen fame in the ‘90s, the pair spent much of the next decade focused on their acting careers, but a return to their musical roots was always inevitable. Since starting to perform together again in 2009, Kid n’ Play have proven they still know how to get the party started right, kicking out their new jack swing-influenced hip hop jams with the same playful energy that made them stars. Though Kid’s iconic 10” flat-top fade is long gone, the pair still busts out their trademark Kick Step dance move at every show, treating fans to a blast from the past that always gets every last bootie in the room shaking.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Christopher “Kid” Reid and “Christopher “Play” Martin met in Queens in the late ‘80s while performing in rival high school rap groups. In 1987 they dubbed themselves Kid n’ Play, and the following year their debut album 2 Hype cracked the Top 10 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Working with Salt-n-Pepa’s producer Hurby “Luv Bug” Azore, the pair went on to release two more hit albums, 1990’s Funhouse and 1991’s Face the Nation. As hits like “Gittin’ Funky” and “Fun House” blew up the airwaves, the pair’s charisma, iconic hair, and outré fashion helped them transition into acting. They found box office success in the early ‘90s, releasing a string of hit films that included the three movies in their House Party franchise. The pair spent much of the ‘00s pursuing personal projects, but they thrilled fans in 2009 when they reunited at the BET Hip Hop Awards and busted out their trademark Kick Step dance. They’ve been keeping it funky and fresh ever since on the old school festival circuit alongside fellow ‘90s favorites like Salt N Pepa, Tone Loc, Bel Biv Devoe, Lisa Lisa, and Vanilla Ice.
