Kodo Tickets

I saw the Kodo drummers in the early 90's and they consisted of 30-40 year old men in top athletic condition. Their performance and exertion left you spell bound and overwhelmed. This troupe was not that. I felt like I was watching a Japanese version of an American high school drum line. I am not sexist but the woman performers took away from the memory of the Kodo drummers intensity. When I saw them 20 years ago you could truly believe that what war was to the samurai, percussion was to the Kodo drummers. This was lost in this new group and their performance. There is more intensity and drama in a Sapporo Beer commercial then what I witnessed at the NAC. I am a drummer, and what I saw I would not recommend paying for. I know what they were and what they were capable of and I felt that it fell terribly short of the target.

Loved the mix of traditional and non-traditional drumming. The dance and costumes added special interest. Was impressed with the discipline of these young artists and the power behind their music. Captivating!
