Les Miserables...
by RJones on 2013-07-06Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5Having lived in England for several years, I had seen the West End production so Les Mis four times previous to this - however, my experience with Broadway Across Canada has always been good, so I had high expectations. And I can't say I was completely disappointed, but the show did have some issues.
I took a friend with me who had never seen the show and didn't know the story. And because I bought the tickets quite late, the seats weren't great (LC1). But the sound quality was really poor, and although I have the original soundtrack and know every word, even *I* couldn't understand a word of what was being sung - so my friend had no hope at all, and was completely lost by the end of the first act (despite my giving her the 'Coles Notes' version of the story on the way to the theatre). Disappointing. I also felt that the conductor was pushing to get to a hot date - a lot of the music seemed much too fast, and the actors were consistently lagging behind it in order to get their emotions across (particularly I Dreamed a Dream and Red and Black).
Having said that - this production was staged completely different from the West End show, and I thought the incorporated video was amazing. It really served to set the scene and provided a wonderful sense of motion and flow - I had never seen anything like it. Kudos to whomever came up with that concept - it was spectacular.
While I was mostly underwhelmed by the cast (sadly this was largely attributable to the poor sound), a couple of them were genuine standouts - Eponine and Madame Thenardier. The latter, in particular, played her part with such relish that she was virtually indistinguishable from the incomparable Jenny Galloway.
