Los Angeles Chargers History

Established in Los Angeles in 1959 as a charter member of the American Football League, the Chargers moved south in 1961 and played in San Diego through the 2016 season. Advancing to five of the first six AFL Championship games ever played, the Chargers claimed the 1963 title and later joined the National Football League when the two leagues merged in 1970.

Since the merger, the Chargers have appeared in the playoffs 15 times and went on to appear in Super Bowl XXIX in 1999. They have captured 15 division titles to date. In 2017, the Chargers moved back to Los Angeles after 56 seasons in San Diego. The team has a total of 15 inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including LaDainian Tomlinson, Lance Alworth, Ron Mix, Sid Gillman, Dan Fouts, Kellen Winslow, Charlie Joiner, Fred Dean, Bobby Beathard, Don Coryell, and Junior Seau.

Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium

The Chargers called the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum home during the team’s first year of existence in 1959. After relocating from San Diego to Los Angeles in 2017, the team played at Dignity Health Sports Park through the 2019 season while SoFi Stadium was under construction. As the first indoor-outdoor stadium in America, SoFi Stadium is a state-of-the-art venue that can accommodate up to 70,240 fans for Chargers games. Costing $4.9 billion to construct, it is the most expensive NFL stadium to be built.

Located on the site of the former Hollywood Park racetrack, the stadium has played host to a variety of sporting events, including Super Bowl LVI in 2022 and the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship, and will be the site for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the Olympic Games in 2028. It is also the home field for the Rams, making SoFi Stadium one of two stadiums currently shared by two NFL teams.

Unfortunately Matt Cassel wasn't playing for KC and therefore the game was a blow out 31-0 for the Chargers. Stadium is great, weather was awesome (82 degrees), prices were horrendous. $9 for a beer and $10 for a hot dog. Tailgating looked like fun and the atmosphere was great.

The whole experience was well worth it. This was my first NFL game, and it was everything I had imagined it to be. The weather was perfect (about 70 degrees), the crowd was loud, the Chargers played a great game against the Chiefs and took over possession of first place in the division. The atmosphere was tremendous. I was able to witness LT score 2 TD's in what may be his last season in a Chargers uniform. I cheered for my team surrounded by fellow Charger fans for the first time (I live in Canada).....it was memorable.

    Location is everything

by mondo3 on 2009-12-06Qualcomm Stadium San Diego Chargers - San Diego

My seats were on the lower level, but with an overhang above, so there was no sun and you weren't able to see the scoreboard. beer/food lines were extremely slow (I gave up after only 3 people were served in 10 minutes). the wait for trains to leave the game was about 30 minutes.

    Good game, service needs work

by Seahawks12 on 2009-11-19Qualcomm Stadium San Diego Chargers - San Diego

Chargers vs Eagles Nov 15 Will call experience was bad: they couldn't find a customer's ticket, so everyone in the 3rd of 4 lines with last names between L and R waited for at least 20 minutes while they sorted this out. They were on verge of a riot. Security check: Web site says no bag bigger than 12" x 12" x 12" but I got hassled even though small backpack easily fit in their box. Follow your stated rules or update your web site. Ushers: useless; they're just security guards Seattle is a much more professionally run operation from ticketing and will call to ushers and crowd control. But San Diego's waether is better.

Heard it was a great game!

by Cabinboy on 2009-11-02Qualcomm Stadium San Diego Chargers - San Diego

Got front row Plaza level seats on the 50 yard line. Turns out we were sitting on the walkway staring at a handrail which was right at eye level. Never mind the hundreds of fans walking by blocking our view and bumping into us. I don't even think I saw half the game.

Good Time despite the Chargers losing.

Good time except it takes forever to get out of the stadium by transit and it looked worse if we drove. The stadium and weather were great.
