Mama Mia was lots of fun

by Plants on 2010-01-05National Arts Centre - Ottawa

Mama Mia matinee on Sunday, January, at the National Arts Centre, Ottawa, Canada was a good, sound production. Characters were well acted and voices were fine. However Donna sounded a little weak initially but for the show stopper songs her voice came through in fine form. Best part was the finale where there was an overabundance of spandex and platforms but also great energy from the cast and the audiance. All were standing ... or should I say dancing to the music. I would recommend this production but have been spoiled by having seen "Wicked". Haven't seen anything yet that comes close to that moving story and amazing music.

    Mammia Mia fantastic fun!

by Gigi07 on 2010-01-05National Arts Centre - Ottawa

A must see if you have the chance, I went with my 19th year old daughter and we both had a great time. The acting and singing were really good, the actors are very energetic. The show went by so fast, we wish we could have seeing it again. The music numbers at the end where really fun and ended the show on a very high note. I would go see it again!

    Mamma Mia speaks for itself

by WW60 on 2010-01-05National Arts Centre - Ottawa

I have also seen the show when it was based in Toronto. I found that the Broadway Across Canada fell short of that production. The energy was there, the story line was just as easy to follow but the vocals were not as strong in the lead characters as well as the ensemble. The casting of Donna's girlfriends was PERFECT but, once again, weak vocals. Overall, lots of energy and great music but weak vocals.

    Just wonderful and enjoyable

by Anonymous on 2010-01-05National Arts Centre - Ottawa

Really, really good. I would strongly suggest that if there was another event such as this one and it was created from a movie, I would advertise to watch the movie first. I had, however, I know of others who did not and they would have been more aware of some acts.

Mamma Mia was a wonderful night out.

by Ottawan101 on 2010-01-05National Arts Centre - Ottawa

Mamma Mia was a fun night out with my wife. Following an excellent dinner at the NAC Café, we headed to the show. The pit band was incredible and definately mastered the musical arrangement. I was just behind them and got to observe them and the musical director in action. The show was very entertaining and the performers kept us busy and laughing. The singing gave us an interesting variety of the original Abba hits appreciated by all. The daughter's voice was missing a little power but had a very soft and pleasant voice and played her part well as did the 3 men who had good strong voices. These gentlemen had convincing voices and parts that suited them well. Good casting! (Sorry,... I'm terrible with everyday names; don't ask me those in a musical...hahaha) However, Mom and her 2 friends stole the show as the 3 amigos. Their singing was powerful, emotional and entertaining. They captured the hearts of the audience and had us laughing and smiling. I left with a good feeling and would not hesitate to recommend this wonderful musical to friends. Thank you for sharing a nice evening.

    Mamma Mia was NICE

by Dobe on 2010-01-04National Arts Centre - Ottawa

We have seen this performance before in Toronto a couple of years ago. I think between the two performances, we found this one just 'slightly' less than enthusiastic as the first one. This could be the difference between the size of the theartre and the relatively 'sedate' Sunday Afternoon attendees?! They actually didn't show the usual expected 'rock in the seats' enthusiasm that one expected from this venue, until very late in the programme. Many we spoke to outside the theatre commented on this as well. We also were a bit shocked at the 'raunchy' bits (which we can't remember being quite that pronounced in the first version) were a bit over the top (and certainly avoidable) for a matinee performance with very young children being 'expectedly' present in the audience for that time day. i.e. We think the plot was quite understandable without having the character unzipping his pants and laying directly on the lady character - it could have been more tastefully done, without loosing the 'signifigance' of the moment knowing that indeed young children were present.

    Mamma Mia was spectacular

by Sunnyday on 2010-01-04National Arts Centre - Ottawa

The talent was incredible. The singing and dancing engaged the audience no matter the age. We attended for my daughter's birthday and the kids were as thrilled as us middle age women. I highly recommend this event for either a family time or girls night out. You will leave with a smile on your face and in a joyful state of mind.

Mamma Mia was energizing and the music addictive. I was singing the whole time and couldn't wait to get up and dance. All of the singers were amazing, but "Donna" was absolutely incredible!!! She is a star!!!!!!

    Absolutely wonderful!

by Caro2010 on 2010-01-04National Arts Centre - Ottawa

I have gone to many shows now and have to admit this was the best one ever. The cast was wonderful and you can feel they all enjoy performing this beautiful piece. Although I have seen the movie and now seen the musical, I would definitely see the performance again. Very entertaining, captivating ... thumbs up!

Mama Mia !! What a performance!

by ZardozofSpiznik on 2010-01-04National Arts Centre - Ottawa

Only a fear of falling out of our box seats kept us from dancing along with the performers. Extremely well done performance with both outstanding singing as well as acting. High energy, comedy and musical score... fun for all ages.

    Almost ABBA!

by Dar1 on 2010-01-04National Arts Centre - Ottawa

This was the best musical I have ever seen! I am a HUGE ABBA fan and going to this musical was the closest I would ever get to a live performace of their music. I would just like to say thank you for the music (pun intended). I would go and see this musical over and over and over!
