MEW IN CONCERT:

Danish band Mew mixes arena-ready hooks with dreamy atmospherics to create an infectious sound that gets everyone in attendance rocking. On miniature epics like “Am I Wry? No”, “Special”, and “Making Friends”, the band expertly moves through complex passages and doles out larger-than-life riffs that keep ticket buyers headbanging throughout the night. Lead singer Jonas Bjerre adds pristine tenor vocals and beautiful melodies to perfectly complement the pummeling power and heady atmospherics of the rest of the group. Mew consistently floors audiences around the world with their stunning light shows and flawless musicianship, offering an unparalleled aural and visual experience whenever they tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in the Hellerup suburb of Copenhagen, Denmark, Mew has been a major factor in sowing the seeds of indie rock in their native country since 1994. After gigging around Copenhagen for a few years, the adventurous quartet of Jonas Bjerre (vocals), Johan Wohlert (bass), Silas Utke Graae Jorgensen (drums), and Bo Madsen (guitar) released their 1997 debut album A Triumph for Man. The band burst onto the international scene in 2003 with the album Frengers, winning praise for their combination of operatic production and rock and roll power. Though Wohlert left amicably in 2006 to spend more time with his growing family, the group soldiered on as a trio for 2009’s No More Stories Today…, which embraced a more dance-oriented production style. The bassist returned to the fold in time for their 2015 album + -, though guitarist Madsen subsequently departed. As a three piece, the band continues to rock arenas around the world with their trademark combination of winning hooks, stunning musicianship, and amazing showmanship.

    Mew - Flawless, as usual.

by Bluebeard on 2015-10-02Venue - Vancouver

This was my fourth time seeing the Danish band in Vancouver and, as usual, the band wowed the crowd. Too bad their were only a couple of hundred people there to see this show. The last time around the same venue was packed, but I think they waiting too long between tours (about 6 years). They definitely didn't lose any fans this time around and word of mouth will hopefully start to build up their North American audience again. I'm still blown away by the accuracy of their vocal harmonies and their ability to improve on their album material when playing live. They played a great mix of songs of all of their albums and the absence of their original guitarist for this tour was only slightly noticeable (and likely only by a few people), as Bo Madsen is very much a part of what makes their sound so unique. After about 1.5 hours of time changes and flowing melodies over complex rhythms, it made for quite the contrast when they strummed out the simple 4/4 extended ending of the aptly titled, 'Comforting Sounds' to end the show. Such an uplifting experience. I look forward to seeing Mew again their next time around.

    visual madness

by caryatid on 2009-12-08Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

I was not expecting to enjoy this show as much as I did! Mew uses a bunch of vocal synthesizers but it added to the whole mesmerizing, whimsical aura along with the projected images in the back. The show only lasted an hour, but it was well worth the wait :D

by jezguy on 2009-12-07Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

Epic...soaring....uplifting..... Mew take us to new places. Unbelievable vocals and technical excellence complimented with bizzare visual imagery. Previously seen them twice in the UK before we came to live in Ontario. Thanks for visiting Toronto Mew, hope you return!

    Musing of the magical Mew

by Mew2009 on 2009-12-07Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

The show was sold out at the Mod Club. It started off with a bang and continued with their gorgeous music. Nothing less than a magical experience. This is one band never to miss.

Mew brings a big dreamscape to a small place

by TheEtrain on 2009-12-07Mod Club Theatre - Toronto

I've been looking forward to seeing my favourite band perform live for quite a while, and although this has been my first time seeing Mew live - my expectations were outmatched. A particular stand-out for the album performances are the seamless transitions between each track, and that was well-displayed in the showroom. Mew made the most out of the limited space and sound-quality (Mod Club is rather noisy and some of the sound gets drowned out). CG Animations accompanied most of the tracks in perfect juxtaposition, it brought to life the whole 'dream-pop' effect that the band surely intended to have. Whether or not you're a fan of shoegaze, soft, or progressive rock - I would say based on this show that Mew is a band for everybody. Upon my personal recommendation, they are one of the greatest bands around today that regrettably are not well-known in the Americas.
