The MLS Preseason is all about new players, new strategies, and new chances for glory. The preseason MLS schedule gives teams an opportunity to find what works, fix what doesn't, and get prepped and pumped for the start of the regular season in March. For fans, it's a time of anticipation and celebration - soccer is back and the regular season is around the corner.
MLS Regular Season
Each of the league's 24 teams (21 from the US, three from Canada) compete from March to October in 34 action-packed MLS games, and the team with the top regular season record takes home the coveted Supporters' Shield. The annual All-Star Game is held midweek during the middle of the season and pits MLS soccer stars against a top football club from a league abroad. Home field advantage is hugely important in all games, and fans score MLS regular season tickets to show their united support and ensure their teams have an edge.
Once the regular season wraps up and the Supporters' Shield is awarded to the team with best regular season record, fans are all about MLS Playoff tickets and the battle for the MLS Cup. The top seven teams from the Western Conference and the top seven teams from the Eastern Conference move on to the MLS Playoffs. The soccer playoff schedule has the 14 teams face off, leading up to the Eastern Conference Championship and Western Conference Championship. The two conference champs then get to compete in the MLS Cup to determine the season's league champion. It's always a stirring finale to the season and an epic reminder why soccer is so beloved around the world.
The MLS playoffs are a fixed-bracket, single-elimination format with the higher seed hosting every match. Now with even more playoff soccer action, 14 of the league's 24 teams qualify for the postseason. One team per conference is given a first-round bye, with the higher-seeded clubs hosting all matches for more of an emphasis on regular season excellence. There is no reseeding, so if the No. 7 seed upsets the No. 2 seed, they still play the winner of No. 3 vs. No. 6 irrespective of other results.
