About

Molly Nilsson on Tour

Molly Nilsson's music is saucy, witty and striking in unexpected but sonically coherent ways.

Nilsson discovered songwriting and synthesizing when a roommate loaned her a synthesizer. She began to write songs as an outlet for pent-up energy and emotions. She says it was a way to pass the time and keep a diary. She recorded about 60 songs in the first two months of her songwriting experiment.

The DIY queen of synth-pop released her first album, These Things Take Time, in 2008. She followed that album with Europa in 2009 and Follow the Light in 2010. In 2011, she gained visibility when John Maus covered her song "Hey Moon" from These Things Take Time for his album We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves.

But Nilsson's album History, released in 2011, was the turning point in her career. Shortly after its release, she began touring through Europe and the U.S. for the first time. History's "I Hope You Die" quickly became a fan favorite.

Her album 2020 was conceived after spending the night in a Tokyo airport. Tokyo was getting ready for the 2020 Olympics and signs were everywhere. She says it got into her dreams.

"One night on tour we were stranded at the airport in Tokyo," Nilsson said in a 2017 interview with The Fader. "We were sleeping on benches. Japan has the Olympics in 2020, so everywhere there's big signs: '2020!' It got into my dreams. I started thinking about 20:20 vision, and it really inspired me."

As the year 2020 proved not to be the dream she (or any of us) envisioned, the album's lyrics, "I don't care if the world is through/Every night is new," became a rallying cry for fans.

Nilsson released Extreme in January of 2022 and subsequently toured the U.S.

Nilsson's live shows will take you on a journey through her life's experiences and yours. Be prepared to think, nod in agreement, dance, make new friends, and sing along.

Molly Nilsson Live in Concert

Molly Lilly Maria Nilsson was born on December 14, 1984, and grew up in Stockholm, Sweden.

She's a prolific songwriter, often creating a song from start to finish in a couple of hours. She's known for her DIY attitude, doing everything from songwriting, producing, marketing, and booking shows on her own under her independent record label, Dark Skies Association, which she founded in 2009. She says if you order a CD, she's the one taking it to the post office.

In a 2022 interview with a radio station in Vienna, Austria, she said, "I like the shows to be sold out. I don't want to sell out." A fine principle for an entertainer to live by.
