Last June, when our family of four was eating dinner on the back patio, I was playing music from a group I recently became a fan of, following a random shuffle selection on iTunes. I delved deeper into their discography and was hooked. I had no idea my son, Dillon, also knew of this band. Dilly: “You like MONO?!” So, with this in common, I immediately checked online to see if they were touring. As luck would have it they were currently on their 25th anniversary world tour. However, the closest spot to catch them live would be Brooklyn, NY. In December. Six months away. I had travel points languishing, itching to be redeemed for just such an occasion. Back in June I was only weeks away from embarking on a Dublin concert adventure with our daughter, Teaghan, to see Hozier and Arcade Fire. MONO would close out a cool concert year for the old man. And spending a couple of days with Dilly in the Big Apple would be an incredible treat. There’s nothing better than bonding with your kids over something you have in common. In this case, with Dill, it was this amazing post-rock alternative collective from Japan. The core four musicians were joined on stage by local studio musicians to replicate their immense instrumental barrage of sound. Four horns plus a 7-piece string section along with the core four from Japan comprised fifteen musicians, bringing it in the most E*P*I*C fashion! The concert was beyond what I had hoped for. Tight musicianship, amazing sound and acoustics, in an intimate venue, amongst a few hundred fans to witness the brilliance…and incredible sonic memories with Dillon for a lifetime.
