Performance was outstanding. Dancers were just great. Costumes and decor were fabulous! The Ballet Company gave an outstanding performance. It was like living in a fairy tale.

    Nutcracker 'sweet'

by Liesel on 2011-12-06National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The costumes and stage settings were beautiful and colourful. I loved the 2nd act more but that's because of the story line. The dancers and Orchestra were excellent. A wonderful production which i would go and see again.

    Disappointing

by Eveline on 2011-12-06National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I was really looking forward to this year's The Nutcracker presented by the Pennsylvania Ballet. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. The costumes and set could not compete with last year's costumes and set in the Alberta Ballet's presentation of Nutcracker. I was also very disappointed with the first part of the performance due to the fact that almost all of the dancing was performed by children and was not of the calabre expected at the NAC and at the price of the ticket. I did enjoy however, as usual, the exceptional performance of our NAC orchestra. Tchaikovski would have been pleased! I also really enjoyed the performances of many of the dancers in the second part. I thought that they were better than last year's primas. The sugar plum fairy and her partner as well as the dancing flowers were really good. Overall, a dispointing evening but at least there were some very positive aspects of the performance that I did enjoy.

    Pennsylvania Ballet lacked magic

by Ballet123 on 2011-12-06National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I have taken my daughter to the nutcracker every year for the past 8 years and hope to continue the tradition but this year was the first disappointment. The scenery, costumes and whimsy arround this particular ballet are as important as the technical execution. For both of us the last two years have delivered on that. While this year I agree the dancers were excellent the choice of a very young Clara and nutcracker along with a more adult staging detracted from our overall experience. The ending was abrupt and the dances at the end were very mixed. Clearly a talented company and I would absolutely want to see them for a ballet of my choosing but for the Nutcracker....bring back Winnipeg!!

It was pleasing to the eye, but my daughter was very disappointed that there was so little "ballet dancing with the professionals ballerinas". Lasy year's Russian production was better.

    the kids-dancers were not honored

by config on 2011-12-06National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This ballet and especially music were just amazing. Since this show is essentially the fairy story for kids, the kids-dancers are important part of this ballet. And they performed just perfect. (We could not believe that kids of 8-10 years old can perform at such a level). However, when the show was ended, those young dancers were not even invited back on scene to get their portion of gratitude and appreciation. Why? I am not a parent but I think this is UNFAIR!

My Great niece and I have been going to the NAC for the Nutcracker for over 15 years and the Pennsylvania ballet company did not disappoint......It was amazing...so well done. We had such a beautiful evening.

The corps de ballet made the difference

by RegNRosie on 2011-12-05National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It was the Corps who made the ballet a true experience that I remember. The snowflakes and sugarplum fairies made the difference. The costumes and styling were exceptional.

    Great afternoon

by EmmyLou on 2011-12-05National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I took my 5 year old to see the Nutcracker at the NAC, we caught the afternoon show. We arrived early and were pleasantly surprised with kids activities prior to the show, they had colouring, a dress up section and the opportunity to dance with some ballet students. The show itself was great - what's to say! Well worth the money, to prepare my daughter ahead of time we should have read the Nutcracker, her attention wandered a bit and she had lots of question. So I think I should have prepared her more with the story in advance. Anyway I'd recommend, it was a great show and sells out fast!

    this performance was very amateur

by RETOP75 on 2011-12-05National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

the quality of the dance and overall performance was poor for this price point. The music was the only thing that was of any enjoyment. The first act dragged on and was unevenful. Would not see this event again by this production.

I saw different versions of the nutcracker over the years and this one would be the least memorable.. it seemed they were filling in time at some parts and I found some of the dances less captivating however the second half was better than the first half. The battle between the mice and soldiers was not that exciting compared to the Winnipeg Ballat version for example. I would recommend the Winnipeg Ballet over the Pennyslvania ballet. On the good side, the costumes were beautiful and the stage scenes were beautiful but the performances were lacking :(

    The Nutracker Ballet

by SnowQueen on 2011-12-05National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I appreciate the inclusing of children in the show but I came to watch ballet dancers. The show only had the amazing ballet dancers in the second half of the show. I paid alot of money to take my family for the first time to the Nutracker and was disappointed that there wasn't more of the ballet that we had come to see.

    Nutcracker?

by pudgeywudgey on 2011-12-05National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I don't have anything to compare the Nutcracker to as this was my first time going. The show started late and then it seemed to start really slow. I found the dancing especially the children to be contrived. I did love the costumes and the one dancer in the second half the really bright and colorful character. For what I paid.....I don't think it was worth it, and it didn't keep my 5 yr. olds attention especially given that it started late and that there was a intermission almost 30 minutes long. Overall I was disappointed.

Nutcracker- was much too child oriented.

by baileychase on 2011-12-05National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I have been to see the Nutcracker every December for th past 7 years and I found this year's show very amateur. I'm sure the parents of the children in the show enjoyed their large roles but I did not. I felt the ballet was similar to attending a children's recital. Not at all on par with the previous years. The sets and costumes were also very unimaginative. I was not impressed at all.

    Nutcracker

by Kaclykell on 2011-12-04National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Took my 7year old and she loved it. But she said to me there was no talking or singing laughing. I thought it was fantastic.

    The Nutcracker Experience

by NRGS on 2011-12-03National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This ballet featured children as the principal dancers - so it was quite different in that respect from other Nutcracker ballet's we have enjoyed at the NAC. The dancing was very good. The beginning of the ballet was a bit slow with the whole first pieces of music being played to lights flashing on different parts of the printed backdrop (dull). The second half had more action in it and the ending was truly delightful with the sled leaving the ground and flying through the air. All in all well worth seeing.

Lacking the dynamism & passion Pina was known for

by hillerod on 2011-11-28National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

This is the third and unfortunately the last Pina Bausch dance performance I will attend. I found the performance tired, repetitive and uninspired. Pina Bausch is no longer here to embue the troupe with her unique spirit and original concepts and this repeat of a 1995 choreography felt simply stale. I feel I wasted a lot of money on a lackluster performance. Very disappointing, as I was blown away by the last two Pina Bausch performances in Ottawa at the National Arts Centre.

Though it started off well, the ballet was good no more though and the story was not obvious and quite unitintersting. It felt more like we had scenes which played for themselves and at times quite repetitive. In the ballet it seemed that we had movement just for the sake of movement and not to enhance or confirm the storyline. I have seen better.
