    A fun family night

by RobG on 2021-12-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We had a great time at Holiday Cirque. To be honest, we had very little idea as to what it was going to be like, but were pleasantly surprised. It did have more orchestral music than we anticipated, but it was a very nice balance with the circus components (which were very well done). We would highly recommend it as a fun family night at the NAC.

    Mile

by Mubu on 2021-12-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The orchestra was awesime. However, it was a circus and the orchestra was eye-straining. It was hard to watch performers since there was a crowded orchestra behind them. Even they were wearing white jackets. The focus should be performers. So, lightening should be effective.

    Very entertaining show!!!

by Dbarre on 2021-12-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The orchestra that played parallel to the jugglers, dancers and trapeze artists was mesmerizing to watch. Highly recommend to all ages.

    Disappointing, underwhelming

by Jashel on 2021-12-13National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

My daughter and I have gone to the NAC many times over the years to attend ballets, operas and shows of all kinds. Given that we had seen the Nutcracker often, at Christmas, I thought it would be nice to experience something new… like the Holiday Cirque. Although the NAC orchestra performed beautifully (kudos to the new maestra… 7 weeks after having given birth!) and the circus performers demonstrated agility, strength and talent, we were left disappointed and underwhelmed with the staging and aesthetic (decor, effects, lighting and costumes) of the performance, as well as with the interaction with the audience. We felt as though we had sat in on a severely overpriced, 90-minute rehearsal. All in, with the price of the tickets, the parking and the wine, we could have stayed in a boutique hotel in Montreal for two nights. Sadly, I will have to rethink next year’s Christmas outing venue.

    Cirque de Soleil disappointment

by Anne on 2021-12-13National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I took my 11 and 9 year old children to see the holiday performance featuring Cirque de Soleil performers with the NAC Orchestra. Sadly the show was a let down. While we enjoyed the Orchestra the performance by the Cirque troupe was disappointing. There was nothing festive about the show, just a handful of individual performers with bland costumes or no sort of storyline - not at all true to Cirque du Soleil. The marketing video made visual and musical references to the nutcracker which was not part of the live show. A real disappointment.

    Awesome performance and music

by theheadmessenger on 2021-12-13National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It was an uplifting and inspiring performance. To witness the potential of the human mind and body from the musicians and the circus performers. Highly recommended.

    Cirque and NAC orchestra

by NAC_SAC on 2021-12-13National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The cirque show was simple but good. The choice of music was appropriate. The acoustics were lousy as the orchestra sound seemed to be absorbed by the walls. We could only see the front players... it would have been better to have some slope and also this would probably have improved the sound quality. My biggest deception was the duration of the show... Starts with 30 minutes followed by a 30 minute intermission and ends with another 30 minutes. A grand total of one hour of show for the price that I paid is just bad value for my money.

    Great!

by Colbie on 2021-12-13National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We had a lovely time, my daughters (9 & 11) really enjoyed it. Entertaining acts, and just the perfect length 90mins. The orchestra was also very good.

    The show was very good.

by Claire on 2021-12-13National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I was surprised that there was an intermission. I would have preferred a continuous show so we can get in and out. I was also dismayed that drinks were allowed in the hall. It is very unpleasant to hear glasses fall when people hit them on the floor let alone that they have to remove their mask when drinking. Bad idea.

    A boost to the heart

by Jean on 2021-12-13National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

We took our son and his family and every one of us loved it. A bit of a squeeze and delay getting into the car park and a bit of confusion on the vaccine check, but all was forgotten once the show started. Beautiful combo of music and dance/ gymnastics.

    Interesting

by EajD on 2021-11-19National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Two world premieres, other pieces also not often heard, excellent playing (of course), so altogether an interesting night out -- our first in-person event since the start of the pandemic!

    Shawnee's Playlist

by Dana on 2021-11-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I reserved a box seat for myself to see this performance as a gift to myself, got the 29 and under STEAL of a price, and was blown away. Their voice paired with the orchestra was pure magic, soul food. Plus, my seat was cozy and good social distancing measures in place.

    An intimate evening with music

by T. D. on 2021-10-26National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I am a novice, at best, when it comes to classical music. I can speak to how this WolfGANG Session felt. And it was like a journey through a spectrum of emotions. And it was an honour to experience the premiere of “Bioluminescence” by Canadian composer Keiko Devaux. The whole evening was a delight and in a wonderfully intimate space. Thank you.

    Driven by Melody

by Pixie on 2021-10-24National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I really enjoyed the Haydn and Arnold pieces. The Concertmaster was very energetic, at times almost dancing in his chair, which was lovely to see and feel. As someone who’s recently decided to learn the violin, it was a lovely day experience. Sadly I didn’t appreciate Paul Adam’s violin concerto like I thought I would.
