    Rodgers and Hammerstein

A charming trip down memory lane with a talented orchestra and witty conductor. If you are looking for a cheerful evening out- this delivers.

    NACO and the Cirque

by JJSS on 2011-06-20National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

When standing after the performance with many others waiting for the escalator someone said "Was there music too?" This summed up a fantastic presentation in which the act upstaged one of the best orchestras in the world and did it before an audience that came to essentially hear great music.

    Tribute? I think not!

by JJSS on 2011-05-19National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The orchestra as always was fantastic. The singer was technically awesome but so full of herself she ruined the listening for me. I wouldn't invite her back until she grows up.

    Linda Edder is Amazing!

by Tinpanali on 2011-05-10National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The orchestra, conducted by Jack Everly, beautifully recreated the mental images of the 'Musicals' they performed pieces from. Linda Edder's voice Is Broadway!! Loved every second.

A Tribute to Judy Garland with Linda Eder

by ManotickGirl on 2011-05-09National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Linda Eder has a magnificent voice and a great stage presence. I enjoyed hearing her sing but I was very disappointed that she did not sing many Judy Garland songs. When an event is advertized as A Tribute to Judy Garland, it should be just that. Ms Eder sang songs that "Judy Garland would have liked" and songs from her CD's, but disappointingly few of the songs that one would associate with Judy Garland and which I was looking forward to hearing. When she sang "Over the Rainbow", she got a standing ovation. That was the sort of song people had come to hear. Nevertheless, she is a very talented performer and I would recommend her concerts.

    NAC Pops concerts never disappoint

by Anonymous on 2011-04-11National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

One couldn't hope for a more talented cast. Ben Crawford provided pure power and I particularly liked "Stars" from the Les Mis medley. Heath Calvert was the epitome of the romantic leading man, melding so well in the "Love Duets" with Brynn O'Malley. Brynn's solo delivery of "On My Own" was better than the original Broadway cast recording in my opinion. Ted Keegan proved to be rock solid on the high tenor notes of "Maria" and "Bring Him Home". And Jacob Clemente will be one to watch in future years. Of course the NAC orchestra had their chance to shine in "76 Trombones", the original "West Side Story Overture", selections from "Oliver" and the opening "Broadway's Leading Men Overture".

    Crowd pleaser POPS concert

by amyly on 2011-01-17National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The members might be change but Canadian Brass is undoubtedly one of the best brass ensembles in the world. Because it was a pops concert, they played some very fun recognizable music (Beatles suite with amazing rendition of Penny Lane, When the Saints Go Marching In, etc.) People were clapping along and probably didn't get up and dance because the hall is still a bit formal/stuffy for that kind of thing. But the quintet were fantastic, with their trademark white sneakers - the founding member Chuck (on the tuba) was very funny and did most of the talking, while the younger members were all very talented and showcased their talents in a most impressive manner. Would definitely go again, highly recommended!

    Pops The Music of Motown

by MireilleB on 2011-01-12National Arts Centre - Ottawa

I loved every minute of it. It was THE BEST of the Pop series that I have seen. The Spectrum band with the NAC orchestra... what a beautiful & unique combination of style. I would recommend this to any baby boomers and those who love Motown music. Bring them back please.

    Motown Disappointment

by Zodd on 2010-12-14National Arts Centre - Ottawa

Well...the idea was to go out to a great show, sing and dance along to some good old Motown classics. Sadly, this show must be one of the least enjoyable ones at the NAC for me. The show lacked ooomph despite many, many, many attempts by Spectrum to engage the audience in a a bit more enthusiasm, the crowd was just not having any of it. I felt badly for NACO and Spectrum, but would not recommend this show to friends.

This was the best performance I have seen in a long time, my wife and I would have liked the show extended for at least 12 hours.

The Music of Motown was cool

by Pascalle on 2010-12-13National Arts Centre - Ottawa

The performance was very classy and upbeat!! The choice of music was too OLD Motown for me, it was more the Babyboomers.

    Music of Motown

by Fish23 on 2010-12-13National Arts Centre - Ottawa

Absoulutely a thoroughly enjoyable and worth every penny for the tickets. The Spectrum singers put on an excellent show ably supported by the always excellent National Symphony Orchestra. The musical blend of the orchestra, Director Tyznik and the Spectrum musicians was simply superb. As someone who grew up to that music, it was a great way to reminisce and sing along as I knew many of the lyrics.

    Pops the Music of Motown

by bison01 on 2010-12-13National Arts Centre - Ottawa

We enjoyed the show immensely. It was just fantastic to watch the Spectrum band. Would definitely recommend this to other baby boomers - there is no music like Motown sound. The NAC orchestra performance was fantatic. They sounded just like the Temptations and Four Tops (harmony was excellent).

    Motown - NAC

by Unreasonablewomyn on 2010-12-13National Arts Centre - Ottawa

I enjoyed the performance, but thought a few things could be different. I found some of the song endings (especially David who would go on and on in his high pitched voice, sometimes screeching for long periods and straining while doing squats) a bit tacky. I also found Pierre's dance movements (and overall the entire choreography) a bit tacky. I wanted to hear Pierre sing something on his own, but he did not. My favourite was Cush - he has less of an ego than David and though David does have great pitch, Cush was less of an egomaniac about his beautiful voice. I enjoyed Daryl's singing, though I did not hear enough of him, when I did, he was great. The Spectrum instrumentalists were lost in the orchestra - but I have their CD now and hear them properly - they are very good. The only other thing I would hope for, is that the sound system for those sitting in the balcony area, is improved. I could not hear when most of the singers talked to the audience, nor was the overall sound quality all that great. Perhaps had I obtained a seat in the orchestra area, I would have enjoyed this performance more due to the rough sound quality for those in the balcony. I would still like to hear these guys again as they are entertaining. I would lose the tackiness though and the crooning as well as the lengthy intro's.

    POPS The Music of Motown

by Jazzy158 on 2010-12-13National Arts Centre - Ottawa

The show was fantastic....in the end got some of us "conservative Ottawans" up on our feet... Now all we need are some clubs in Ottawa that meet the same R&B needs to the people. One note: the autograph/photoshoot could had been handled better.

Bring them back again and again. It was an amazing show for all those who remember the era and the dances. Even if you didn't grow up with the tunes you should feel like dancing. It was worth the wait.

These guys were absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend going to see them if you are able to. The group, Spectrum, consisted of 4 highly talented vocalists, all with different ranges and I found the entire shoe incredible. A must see.
