    Once the musical

by Myreviews on 2014-10-29National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

As a Broadway show, Once is unique, starting with inviting patrons for a drink in the pub before the show and at intermission. The actors/musicians were very talented; I just can't imagine myself playing an instrument, singing and dancing at the same time. The music was excellent, the dancing part was not overly "elaborate" and the story line was a bit simplistic. There were a few laughs, the lead lady was somewhat more believable that the lead male. I found the end a bit "confusing", as I did not realize it was over until the cast came together on the stage. Overall, it was good, but not my favorite. PS: the end speech from Mom was beautiful and very moving.

I loved the music. The acting was good. Mostly I loved that I could understand all the words in all the songs and the storyline.

    Once - was enough

by Maylyn on 2014-10-28National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

It was a great show, very unique, awesome singing but missing something that would draw me back. It's possible that with both the main characters not being on stage may have taken away from the full potential of the emotional elements of the show. It would be interesting to compare the dynamics but not worth paying to see again just to find out. Thankful for the tribute and dedication to Corporal Nathan Cirillo.

    Once was emotionally charged!

by ChrissyO on 2014-10-27National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I loved everything about this musical! The cast was truly talented beyond belief ... I loved Matt DeAngelis and Erica Swindell ... incredibly talented. Of course Stuart Ward, with his beautiful voice and Dani de Waal with her incredible acting were truly unforgettable! I came home and downloaded the soundtrack for Once and have been singing it in my car...love it...love it ...love it! Was very touched by Donna Garner and the cast who paid tribute to Corporal Csirillo. Thanks to all the cast and crew for giving us a night to remember during a very difficult week in Ottawa.

Great date night with my teenage daughter

by urbanmom on 2014-10-27National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

My 17 yr old daughter and I saw Once on Friday night. Alex Nee played the part of Guy. He did a fantastic job and we felt that he could easily play the lead role in any production he is associated with. Likewise, Dani de Waal has a magical sweet voice and was absolutely charming as Girl and her comedic timing is spot on. As long time patrons of NAC theatre, we felt that this was a fresh and fun production with interactive and memorable music and inspired choreography.

An excellent evening of intimate theatre!

by MusicalsMom on 2014-10-27National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Once was as heart-warming and emotional as I remember it! The evening was particularly meaningful given the recent tragedy in Ottawa, and this ode to love and compassion was very well-received. The male and female lead voices blended beautifully and the entire company demonstrated tremendous energy, passion and sharp comedic timing as well as musical excellence. On the negative side (a quibble): the acappella rendition of "Gold", my favourite piece in the musical, would have benefitted from additional miking or more force, as it did not project very well to the back of the orchestra section and was somewhat lost in predictable crowd noise, lessening its impact. The short speech, standing ovation, and fundraising for Cpl Nathan Cirillo's family at the end of the performance was a lovely touch by the company. Kudos to them for their empathy.

    ONCE was Awesome

by Gillwills on 2014-10-26National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

I went with my daughter. Unfortunately, I was under the impression I had bought tickets for the 8pm show, so had to buy two more tickets (Mezzanine, Row D, 18 and 20). We found the musical different to others we have seen, but all the actors/actresses were extremely talented. The music was so very good. My daughter, who is in her early twenties, was so sorry when it ended - she enjoyed it immensely. I love the music.

    Once was unforgettable!

by GracieT on 2014-10-26National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

Words cannot describe the beauty, love and sense of pride that evening! The set was simple but beautiful in a sense that it was all they needed to tell the story. The love that the characters displayed with their acting and in their voices surrounded the theatre and touched the audience in a truly heartfelt manner - Bravo! I was proud to be in attendance the night they dedicated the performance to Cpl Nathan Cirillo, I was proud to be Canadian and proud to know, like the performance I saw there is still hope in this world and love in our hearts! Unforgettable!!

    Ok

by happy1 on 2014-10-24National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The leader singer wasn't the best. The female singer was much better than he was. I am assuming it is because it my have been an understudy. They did say that x is being played by....which is unfortunate because I really enjoyed the movie and the advertisement on TV.

Once: a unique and memorable display of taken

by NYCVisitors on 2014-01-27DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

We went to see once with some friends at DPAC. We all loved the non-traditional feel the show had. The singers and musicians were fantastic without exception (and we are musicians.... Impressed across the board!). The scene with very quiet a Capella singing was captivating. The variety of instruments was also remarkable. The show had a great mix of humor and sadness as well. We would highly recommend this show and cast to anyone.
