Orlando Magic History

Joining the NBA in the 1989 expansion era, the Magic struggled for three years until picking center Shaquille O'Neal first in the 1992 draft. The Magic finished at .500 in the 1992–93 season, barely missing the playoffs. Then, with only a slim chance in the 1993 draft lottery, the team won the rights to pick No. 1 again. They used their selection, Chris Webber, in a trade to obtain guard Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway and future picks.

O’Neal and Hardaway led the Magic to 50 wins in the 1993–94 season and then 57 victories, as well as a trip to the NBA Finals, the following year. In the 1995–96 campaign, the Magic won a franchise-record 60 games in what would be O'Neal's last season in Orlando. They made it to the Eastern Conference finals against the Chicago Bulls.

Over the next 10 years, the Magic made the playoffs five times under the leadership of coach Doc Rivers and Hall of Fame guard Tracy McGrady, who earned two scoring titles and the 2001 Most Improved Player award during his tenure. The 2006–07 season saw Orlando start a run of six consecutive postseason appearances, as star center Dwight Howard blossomed and the Magic surrounded him with young talent and savvy veterans.

The Magic reached the second round of the playoffs in 2008 behind Howard and forwards Hidayet "Hedo" Türkoğlu and Rashard Lewis. The following season, with trade acquisition Rafer Alston filling in for injured point guard Jameer Nelson and sharpshooter J.J. Redick taking on a more prominent role, the team won 59 games and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, the Boston Celtics and the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers in the playoffs. It earned the Magic a second trip to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Following Howard’s trade to the Lakers in 2012, the Magic began a decade-long rebuilding process while developing notable talents like Victor Oladipo, Aaron Gordon and Nikola Vučević. The Magic’s luck seemed to improve after reaching playoff contention once again in 2019 and 2020, and landing top draft picks such as Mo Bamba, Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, and 2023 Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero.

    Heat are worth the Price

by Nelly71 on 2013-04-04 Amway Center - Orlando

I wanted to see the Miami Heat live so bought close to floor seats. Was well worth the price of the tickets, even without Dwayne Wade playing. The Heat are worth the price of admission from all the superstars to the entertainment they bring with it. This was thier last win on their 27 game winning streak and one where Lebron took over in the second half. Along with the Heat came many other celebrities in the building that night. You are in for a show when they come to town. Would I pay the money I paid to watch the Orlando Magic and almost any other team from there? Nope, the Magic might be worth a quarter of the ticket retail value.

    Orlando couldn't do it

by Beater on 2012-05-12 Amway Center - Orlando

Great seats for a good price - Amway very efficient at getting people in and out. The game did not favour the home crowd but a fun experience for my son's first ever live B-Ball game. Still prefer hockey.

Watching the Magic - by a UK traveller

by GracieUK2012 on 2012-02-15 Amway Center - Orlando

So, when in America take advantage of their massive sports culture and go see a game. Well that's what people say anyway. My fiancee (a die hard Rugby and Football fan) and I bought tickets from Ticketmaster to see Orlando Magic play the Atlanta Hawks at the Amway Centre which is in downtown Orlando. It was brilliant!!! We expected it to be cheesy loud and a bit annoying - it was cheesy in a sportsfan kind of way, loud because everyone was getting involved and the things going on between the quarters and the only annoying thing was that we don't have a basketball culture over here!!! We had a beer in a restaurant just down the road from the Amway centre which was great, sat outside in the street watching all the fan happily chatter and walk upto the stadium. Then we went for dinner at Journigans which has a $39.99 'gourmet' buffet available before the game and you can watch the players practise from your table. Fantastic the view was amazing and the food was divine!! All in all - get involved buy some Magic merchandise to get you in the mood and go watch a game, feel American and turn into a transatlantic fan!!

    Simply Magic

by StratCom on 2012-01-09 Amway Center - Orlando

I was visiting Orlando and decided to take in the Game. The new Arena is mind blowing is amongst the very best I have seen. Parking was easy, access fast and everyone was there to have a good time. Excellent views from our seats. The only shame was that the Magic were way too good for the Wizards

Game was great. Though in high seats, easy to see and great atmosphere, big screen works well.

Magic against the Lakers....what can you say?!?!?

by CalgaryCoach on 2011-02-17 Amway Center - Orlando

The game and the entertainment before and during the game was fantastic! However, what I was most impressed with was the staff that worked at the Amway Center, as they were very customer focused, professional and polite. From the ushers to security to folks in the Mercedes Benz room....it was truly an amazing experience for my son and I. Certainly a graduation gift that he (and I) will remember forever. We live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, but I wish we could go again some day!!

I went to see the game with my father and we had a great time. All employees of the Amway Arena were very professional, polite and jovial. My only criticism is that, compared to the game that I saw last year at Away Arena, the entertainment lacked punch and was less sustained. Although, I'll buy tickets for next year when I come to Orlando. It remains a Magic game, a Magic time!
