    Patty G is Back!

by Bster on 2013-06-13The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Nice to see Patty Griffin return to Toronto again. It has been sometime since she has led her own band into Toronto and been the headliner. I was there at the Church for her last concert and it was a pretty good show that was supporting a pretty good new CD at the time (Children running Through). This show, on June 11th at the Danforth Music Hall, was a triumph of sorts for her and fans like me. Not only was Patty returning to Toronto again but she was returning as the true Folk Americana artist that she truly is. The new CD, American Kid, is right on back to the spot she belongs. It wasn't that the Gospel Album was poor or misguided (though it was in ways) or that the vocal heavy Children Running Through was a great escape. It's just that sometimes, after time flies by, you really long to see the best do what they do best. Patty is either the best female folk singer of our time or right there amongst Lucinda and Gillian and others.....American Kid is mere confirmation of such and a glorious confirmation at that. Rarely does an artist not only get away with playing 8 tunes from the New album but be encouraged to do even more by most everyone in the building. I know that we all long to hear stuff from her first three albums and some shouted them out too but if you have followed Patty for as long as I have then you instantly enjoy the new album and want to hear everything from it. it is that good. I appreciate the want to hear Moses or Tony or Long Ride Home but we have heard them before and this was a night to celebrate American Kid and celebrate she did. In fine voice and spirits, she slowly ran through 8 of the new numbers. Each was enjoyed very much and just about equally. The Band of 4 looked sounded excellent together and it was a relief, for me, to see that she brought them over the border. Always a bit of a letdown when the artist saves a few coins and comes solo. I prefer the band thing so as to truly get the sound of the new CD. And we got it in spades. Wonderful. The selection and the amount of old tunes that were mixed in means this show only gets the 4 stars. There could have been more and I certainly would have chosen others than what Patty came up with but when dealing with a catalogue so wide and so well, there was really no disappointment besides maybe the amount. A little longer - 2 hours instead of 90 mins - would have sufficed better.

Patty Griffin - amazing songwriter, amazing voice!

by alphachannel on 2013-06-13The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Patty Griffin is always a treat to see. Very minimal stage dressing but she doesn't need it anyway. She played new stuff along with some older favourites. Unfortunately, I found the band to be a little less polished this time and whoever was doing her sound wasn't the best. Patty seemed a little tired or maybe sick - her voice cracked a few times. All this being said - I wasn't disappointed.

Patty Griffin with Buddy Miller, at the Commodore

by Goldenhorde on 2010-04-04Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

We had a great table, house left, that had a nice view of the stage. The crowd was a mix of older and younger people. Buddy came on and played a nice solo acoustic piece, and then the band came on. That's when we realized we were getting more Patty than we imagined, as she sang back-up on a good portion of his set. Buddy is an accomplished guitar player, and has a great voice as well. After his set Patty came on, with the same band, plus a few extras, including Buddy. She played heavily off of her new album, mostly gospel. It was a beautiful set, she has a beautiful voice, but we were left a bit disappointed from the lack of some of her older songs from making the set list. Still, a great show on a great night.
