About

Peter Gabriel’s five-decade-long career includes nine studio albums, film scores for the likes of Martin Scorsese, six Grammy Awards and two separate inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a solo artist and founder of ’70s prog-rock pioneers Genesis). As a solo artist, Gabriel has sold an estimated 16 million albums worldwide, with his fifth studio album — 1986’s So — going five-times platinum in the U.S. and producing the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Sledgehammer.” Gabriel’s catalog of hits also includes ballads like “In Your Eyes,” which was featured in an iconic scene from the 1989 teen rom-com, Say Anything. Gabriel has performed in front of countless sold-out crowds on world tours that often include large-scale performances and conceptual set design. In May 2023, Gabriel embarked on i/o – The Tour, his first world tour in seven years, which features songs from his forthcoming 10th studio album, i/o — his first full-length album of new songs in over two decades.

    Fairly straightforward show, but effective

by JGM1 on 2012-09-21Air Canada Centre - Toronto

Peter Gabriel always puts on a great show. He's too proud and intelligent to do anything else. This would be the best possible show for those who like smash hits. The most gratifying surprise for me was the devine vocals of Jennie Abrahamson. Her voice is a more powerful and trained version of Kate Bush, with very similar tone. This made for a perfect blend... actually a much better blend than Anna Brun, who backed him up for the New Blood tour, and was scheduled to do this tour until she became ill and returned home. She is a good solo act, but I disliked her as a backup for PG. Jennie also has much better stage presence. Peter seemed to genuinly enjoy her soaring vocals.

Not up to his usual standards

by Paul1234 on 2012-09-21Air Canada Centre - Toronto

It's tough to do a bad job when you have raw materials such as an artist like Peter Gabriel and an album such as SO to work with, but in this case he didn't really do anything WITH them. Each song was well performed in their typical concert version with an extended intro and extended ending, but the entire presentation seemed disjointed with gaps and extended pauses between each song. there was no flow like in previous concerts. I also found the sound mix to be off for much of the concert and the 1/2 to 3/4second delay in the video playback was very annoying. ie. clips of the drummer has him hitting the drums and cymbals well after they had actually been played and all the singers looked like they were badly lip-syncing due to the delay. This concert also had no real stage presence. the Previous 3 PG concerts I've been too have been epic works of art and are as much a story for the eyes as music for the ears. This show had none of that with many contrived and repeated activities such as Peter standing between the guitar and bass players and having all 3 do badly contrived dance moves and trying to look like it is a 'spontanious' activity. The moving light gantries were kind of a neat idea, but because they would only come out for one song at a time, and then go back to their behind the stage position, there again was no flow or build to a climax of something exciting happening and so after the first time they just became a distracting element as they cluttered up the stage and blocked the view of what else was happening. With all this said, it is still a great set list and there is nothing like hearing them live, but certainly not up to the standard that Peter has set in the past.

First time I ever saw Peter Gabriel in concert and it lived up to everything I thought it would be (theatrics, musicality, lighting).

    Good for the Soul !!

by no1Hanfan on 2011-07-06Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

After listening to Peter Gabriel's Scratch My Back album I must admit I was disappointed at the overall tone, which came off as quite morose and melancholy. Hearing all my favourite Gabriel songs with full orchestration and without the usual guitar and drums, it was an acquired taste. When I heard he was coming to town though I jumped at the chance to see him, a long time fan since about 1982 I was prepared to lower my expectations for this live show. However, I'm happy to say that his concert was absolutely amazing, the album doesn't do the music justice, it should be enjoyed live. Peter Gabriel's music has always had an other world quality for me, it can be very spiritual, of the earth and reaffirms the primal instincts in all of us. At times his music moved me to tears, especially during the song Father and Son which made me think of my late Father who with my Mother and me had also enjoyed Gabriel concerts over the years. The evening turned out to be truly wonderful, the orchestra was fantastic (too bad the sound isn't better at Molson Amphitheatre) Gabriel's voice can still move right through me and I would say that anyone who wasn't moved at least once during the concert has no soul, and needs to come back down to earth and get grounded again.

    Peter Gabriel is AMAZING!

by twentytwo on 2011-07-04Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

Even though he is in his sixties now, Peter Gabriel can still put on an incredible performance. His voice hasn't diminshed in the least. The orchestra and back up singers only made it better! The stage show / lighting etc... was also amazing and mezmerizing. Could have listened all night, and I couldn't believe that it was over so quickly? One can't get enough of his music. A unique, one of a kind talent...

    Excellent show

by NOTLPhoto on 2011-06-26Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

While the opening set was disappointing - let's face it, Scratch My Back was not one of Gabriel's most successful ideas - things really picked up in the second set. Generally speaking, I cannot stand orchestration of rock music, but John Metcalf and The New Blood Orchestra seem to have found the formula that so many others have missed. Digging in the Dirt and Intruder were particularly impressive and Solsbury Hill seemed as fresh and exciting an anthem as the day I first heard it 34 years ago. This was, again, a memorable Gabriel concert that even the venue could not spoil. The sound was excellent - not always the case in The Molson Amphitheatre, which is a mediocre dump at the best of times. And surely when you pay over $100 a ticket they could make sure there is toilet paper in the facilities at the intermission - oh, dear, oh dear, and this in 2011. But a great show, nevertheless.

    Disappointing!!!!

by sueandcynthia on 2011-06-26Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

He has a new CD with music which is unrecognizable and often 'artsy' and sad. He played those songs for most of the concert and did not play the songs we went to hear. I wanted to hear Sledgehammer, and he didn't play it. When i go to a concert, I expect to hear the songs that provoke fun memories and good times. This concert was boring, I was hoping he was going to play his new music for the first half and then the old fun music for the second. He continued to play his new music for the entire concert. I was under the impression that he was playing for us, not for himself. He obviously loves his orchestra as he introduced them several times and yes, they were quite good. I really think he needs to rethink his concerts and play a variety of new and old to accommodate all of us, not just himself.

    snoozfest

by cheesyfromage on 2011-06-24Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

Though I'm a big Gabriel fan, this was not a great show. The song arrangements with orchestra were slow and quiet. As the concert progressed I got more and more sleepy. Peter's stories are always entertaining and his voice was amazing, but the orchestra format left his great songs sounding lifeless much of the time. Some of the arrangements made the songs unrecognizable and without the original energy. Peter clearly loved it, but I didn't.

The show was incredible!! You've got to get out to see it. It's a Peter Gabriel you've never heard before and the New Blood Orchestra added a refreshing new twist. Such an eloquent story teller and a real must see!!

There is no one else that can stir up emotions in me with their singing like Peter Gabriel. This concert was the best I've ever seen. And the wonderful couple beside is that kept lending us their binoculars made the concert all that more special.

    The Masters Evolution

by TCAP1 on 2011-06-24Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

The movement of Gabriels' vocal and visual poetry was once again the masters display of evolving artistry. His musical arrangements via the New Blood Orchestra was renaissance Gabriel. Bravo!!!!

1st part of the concert had very little energy and I didn't like how dark the set was. 2nd part after the break was what I was expecting. These were all the best songs of Peter Gabriel. If Sledgehammer was on the list, it would've been perfect

    Peter Gabriel concert was inspirational!

by anna1banana on 2011-06-24Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

He may have aged (but not much!) but his voice is still phenomenal! The New Blood Orchestra was amazing and received several well deserved standing ovations. As the woman next to me at the concert said, "He is a special soul" and it shines through in his music! It was extra fun when he played several of his older songs ie. Salsbury Hill etc.... and he started running, skipping and really enjoying himself on stage! All in all it was a very enjoyable, educating and uplifting experience! A must see!

    Peter Gabriel & New Blood

by TazMunster on 2011-06-24Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - Toronto

There was a lot of thought that went into this performance. Each song with its lighting, the coloured graphics as well as the film of family, history and/or political message. Very, very well done.

    Peter Gabriel

by HipestHipster on 2011-06-24United Center - Chicago

Peter has assembled an amazing orchestra and showcased his wide vioce range. This is the second Gabriel show we have attended and both have that "something different" that makes it a musical spectacle. It also helped that the sound at the United Center was special as well.

    Beautiful performance

by Eulogy on 2011-06-23Molson Amphitheatre - Toronto

Peter Gabriels voice is and was effortless. The New Blood Orchestra was incredible - a truly talented group of musicians. Gabriel seemed to be part of a band, rather than just a soloist - stepping off stage to allow full focus on the orchestra during instrumental parts and even coming on stag to introduce his opening act (Ane Brun , what an incredible voice) - seemed very humble. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance, was hoping for a few more popular songs but the covers of Paul Simon, Arcade Fire & David Bowie made up for it.
