About

Combining elements of new wave, disco, and indie rock, French alt rock outfit Phoenix is arguably one of the most creative forces in contemporary pop music. After 2009’s Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix took home the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album, the band followed up in 2013 with Bankrupt!, their fifth album and most successful release to date. Building on the catchy synthpop of its predecessor and buoyed by infectious singles “Entertainment” and “Trying to Be Cool,” Bankrupt! reached No.1 on the US Alternative Albums, Independent Albums, and Rock Albums charts, marking a first for the band. Formed in the suburbs of Paris in the mid-‘90s, Phoenix scored a breakthrough hit with “If I Ever Feel Better” from their 2000 debut United, paving the way for the mainstream success of sophomore album Alphabetical in 2004. On tour in 2013, the band have been keeping ticket buyers moving with their danceable live sets, earning a reputation as one of the most entertaining live concerts of the year.

    Phoenix was unbelievable!!

by Anonymous on 2014-06-15Sound Academy - Toronto

I went to this concert with three of my friends, all of who go to concerts alllll the time, and we came to the unanimous vote that this was the most incredible concert we've ever been to! It's been nearly a week and we still can't stop talking about how unbelievable it was! From the opener Albert Hammond Jr. to the very last song of Phoenix's 5 SONG ENCORE WHERE THOMAS MARS CROWD SURFED AND SANG TO THE FANS WHILE STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF TWO AUDIENCE MEMBERS the entire concert was phenomenal!! I would go to every single on of their concerts if I could!!

    Phoenix at Sound Academy 2014

by Funkadelizioso on 2014-06-13Sound Academy - Toronto

Albert Hammond Jr, the opening act for the concert was a nice addition, he had witty sense of humor and equally entertained us with garage, hard-rock, punk influenced guitar instrumentation, The crowd was crazy when the riffs became more intense; something that I desire for a good rock performance. However, some Strokes fans will be disappointed that no songs from the band's discography was played in Albert's performance. Phoenix triumphed and gave me perhaps the best performance I heard ever. The instrumentation and the synths were loud and energetic. Thomas Mars, the lead vocalist was very engaging to the crowd, he even crowd surfed amid the final act. The band's charisma to perform cannot go unnoticed, they looked passionate and I felt it connected both the musicians and the audience together. I highly recommend people to attend a Phoenix concert.

    AMAZING

    by Magz09 on 2014-06-13Sound Academy - Toronto

Phoenix performed above and beyond my expectations - they are a tight band, played all the hits, had great lights/screens to support, and seemed to be having a great time playing. Highly recommended!

    Phoenix did not disappoint

    by sopure1981 on 2014-06-13Sound Academy - Toronto

The set was a great mix of new and old Phoenix. The Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix songs were by far the highlight of the evening! It was great to see some crowd swimming too!

More about music than theatrics. They belted out song after song after song. I lost count after 20+ songs.

    Perfect Phoenix

    by Rida77 on 2014-06-13Sound Academy - Toronto

You know a concert was amazing when you are still thinking about it and want to re-live it! I had seen Phoenix before but that show did not compare to this! Thomas Mars coming into the crowd twice was a highlight! Catch them live if you still can!

    Great performance!

by kani on 2014-06-12Métropolis - Montreal

Didn't think much of Phoenix before seeing them live at Osheaga. Thomas is an amazing performer, he loves the public and it shows. I wish more artists would manifest this much passion for the scene and sharing their work live. I was happy to see them again and they didin't disappoint me. Their setlist is the bomb! It gets you dancing right from the beginning.

Fun but sound guy messed up big time

by Anonymous on 2013-08-06Fort York: Garrison Common - Toronto

I would give the Grove music festival 3.5 out of 5. This festival was fun. The bands all sounded great and it was an overall good time. The only flaw was the sound guy had the volume cranked way down on the mic for like every performance except the finale at night making it basically impossible to hear the bands sing. The music was still good though, but it ended up being more of an instrumental performance since you couldnt hear the singing and i was in the front, so if i couldnt hear, no one could. That being said, that was technical error and had nothing to do with the bands themselves, who were all great.

Wonderful Day - wide variety of excellent music

by mojave3 on 2013-08-06Fort York: Garrison Common - Toronto

Every single artist was phenomenal. Gorgeous weather and great view. Excellent concert location for outdoor festival and would love to attend a similar event there in the future. Nightbox - excellent (saw them open for JAMC a year ago and were just as good), Young Empires - LOVe their music!, Palma Violets - insanely good - would see them again in a second, Wavves - decent, Earl Sweatshirt - not bad at all - ends of songs very abrupt, The Gaslight Anthem- phenomenal, Girl Talk - I was actually starting to get a bit tired from the full day in the sun and instantly regained my energy - such amazing energy and love from the entire audience here, Hot Chip - amazing - would love to see them again, Phoenix - a real treat and I hadn't had a chance to see them before and loved their set. The only real complaint I would have is that very often the sound was not as good as it could be and there were problems in a number of the sets. This could definitely be improved. Otherwise I was impressed by the very nice crowd - a good turnout considering there were a number of changes. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE continue this event and I will buy a ticket right away and please keep it in Toronto!

    bad bad not good

by fordsurf on 2013-08-06Fort York: Garrison Common - Toronto

I bought my tickets for Grove at full price. By the day of the show and 3 dropped acts later we were turning down free tickets, they couldn't even give them away! The sound was terrible for all but Phoenix which is too bad because what remained of the lineup was pretty good. Beers we're $11 a king can, brutal. Shameless promotion was everywhere including what could have been prime viewing area. Good times were had but my God, give me a refund Grove that was a disaster!

Good lineup marred by sound issues.

by Zorak on 2013-08-06Fort York: Garrison Common - Toronto

Several events have been held at Fort York this summer and went off without a hitch. However, a promising lineup for Grove Fest was compromised by several issues. 1) Relocating from Niagara-on-the-Lake caused several acts to drop from the bill. 2) $11 beers were ridiculous, as was the only water provided ($3 "sport water") 3) An atrocious sound mix. Vocals were muffled or incomprehensible for most of the day. 4) Set times being switched for Palma Violets and Wavves with zero notice. 5) No merch from any headlining bands. Among other issues. A promising event that was brought down by poor organization (through no fault of the bands themselves. Perhaps piggybacking onto the Osheaga/Lollapalooza weekend was ill-advised.

    pretty tight show overall

by SuperSandor on 2013-06-19queen E theatre - vancovuer

I like pheonix. straight up tight pop goodness. It was a pretty tight show musically, very tasteful guitar work. The vocalist dropped the ball here and there dabbling in stuff that was outside of his comfort zone, but I can forgive a couple songs. He was giving it his all and that's to be commended. The sound guy should be fired, however, for drowning the show in low end. The mid range was mixed really well, which made it that more of a let down when the bass would kick in and crush the vocals/synth/guitar. As usual he/she became more hard of hearing as the show progressed, and at one point the folks I was with looked over and wondered if he had fallen asleep at the console and accidentally pushed the house eq bass slider up to feedback levels and passed out. Some people even left the room because it made them physically ill. Too bad, really enjoyed most aspects of the show, but the mix/volume was silly.

    If your undecided. GO

by Epat on 2013-03-31Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

I saw them at the first stop on the tour. I was unsure going in but phoenix turned out amazing live. Very good live probably would be way more fun in a general admission venue. The music was great the lights were pretty good not the best but overall a very good show.
