About

Combining elements of new wave, disco, and indie rock, French alt rock outfit Phoenix is arguably one of the most creative forces in contemporary pop music. After 2009’s Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix took home the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album, the band followed up in 2013 with Bankrupt!, their fifth album and most successful release to date. Building on the catchy synthpop of its predecessor and buoyed by infectious singles “Entertainment” and “Trying to Be Cool,” Bankrupt! reached No.1 on the US Alternative Albums, Independent Albums, and Rock Albums charts, marking a first for the band. Formed in the suburbs of Paris in the mid-‘90s, Phoenix scored a breakthrough hit with “If I Ever Feel Better” from their 2000 debut United, paving the way for the mainstream success of sophomore album Alphabetical in 2004. On tour in 2013, the band have been keeping ticket buyers moving with their danceable live sets, earning a reputation as one of the most entertaining live concerts of the year.

Amazing show, encore was amazing, I didn't want them to stop and it seemed like they didn't want to either! Absolutely loved when Tomas came out into the crowd. Amazing! Makes you feel like they still care about the audience and their fans. They all looked so happy to be there and looked like they were having so much show. Music was amazing, loved the jam sessions they did between songs. Great concert!

They were great. THey played a ton of songs, sounded absolutely amazing and were just so great to watch. All the music sounded awesome and they were totally energized!! I wish they could have played all night, though they did play a lot of songs, and even came out for a few more for an encore!!

Concert was excellent. Phoenix is fantastic live, sounds just like the album. Neon Indian was interesting, but far far too loud. My ears still hurt.

Incredible performance at a less than stellar venue. You must see this band at every opportunity, you may not think their material comes across so well live but you will be very pleasantly surprised. Phoenix got the usual lame Toronto crowd involved and ended the night on a real high note despite some rustiness from a couple of the band members. Amazing show no questions asked.

I was blown away by this bands live performace! this type of music is may lead some to beleive they only sound that good in the studio; Wrong! they sound even better live. Great inspired performance; tight band and capped off with the Joint as a great venue to see live acts!

    Stellar live show!

    by putamadre on 2009-12-09Clutch Cargo's - Pontiac

This was my first time seeing Phoenix live and they were amazing. I had read other reviews that their live show is great, but they surpassed all expectations. Definitely worth checking these guys out at a smaller venue before they get huge!

    Phoenix was just ok

by neonsparkle on 2009-12-07Sound Academy - Toronto

Opening band went on extremely late. Phoenix played a very short set. They sounded great live but overall the whole show was a waste of time. Very dissapointing.

    amazing live

by sarahsarah on 2009-12-07Sound Academy - Toronto

Phoenix was amazing! They sounded great live, had cool lights and really interacted with the audience (i.e. crowd surfing and letting audience on stage!!!). It was a really dancey and fun concert, with a good set list too. Very high energy.

    Super, frankly.

by snotbox on 2009-12-06Sound Academy - Toronto

Having seen Phoenix at er.., The Phoenix back in July (before the new album blew up real good), I was understandably stoked for last night's visit to the Sound Academy. Phoenix didn't disappoint. Great set list, high energy, good crowd. Thomas Mars' voice was strong, and the band was tight. Add a rather intense light show and whammo, great concert. Too bad cab drivers didn't figure out that 2500 people were leaving the middle of nowhere at the same time. Otherwise, awesome!

    Phoenix rocked the joint

by RobertS on 2009-12-06Sound Academy - Toronto

This is the second Phoenix concert I went to this year. Myself and 4 friends went, all agreed they killed it. Absolutely amazing show, the whole band sounded stunned by how good a reception they were getting, cause the entire crowd was nuts. Definitely can't wait till they come back.

They might finally get the attention they deserve

by Kleineken on 2009-07-20The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

A great band that i've been listening to for a long time. They've always had catchy tracks, but have never put out a complete album like the current one: "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix". It's a spectacular album, It's some of the catchiest, most fun, dancy, rock music you'll hear. They are incredible live. Great energy, perfect sound. The drummer is phenomenal to watch, he hits the skins so hard. I've seen all the big artist as of late, and I think the only one that might top my Phoenix experience was Radiohead. Check these guys out on this tour. I hope the album gets the recognition it deserves.

Phoenix at the Phoenix - match made in heaven!

by Jimmer on 2009-07-20The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

It's not every day that you get to see one of your favourite bands at a venue by the same name. When Phoenix dropped into Toronto at the Phoenix Concert Theatre that is the treat that fans received. The crowd was outstanding and just there to have a great time. The energy on stage was amazing and the band sounded even better than on the album. They seemed really pumped to be playing live and were feeding off the crowd. The venue was perfect for this band. All-in-all a great night out!

    Phoenix changed my life

by markz on 2009-07-17The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

When I left the Phoenix Concert Theatre that hot Monday night, sometime past the turn of the next day, I felt like I had been reborn. Forget Lisztomania... when Phoenix finally took the stage around 10:30 PM, it felt like Beatlemania. I have been to a lot of concerts in my 22 years alive, and I have never heard an audience like this. My buddies and I had got to the place early, so we could grab some beers, get good "spots" and get into the groove. We didn't want to miss a single thing. We're all long time Phoenix fans, though never heard them live, and had been waiting for this concert for THREE YEARS. While waiting in line, we happened on a promoter of some kind putting up WAP posters on the posts outside, and managed to get one from him, which was cool. Pacing along the lineup to the door were a dozen scalpers. I was standing beside a dolled-up girl who told me she didn't have a ticket, but was trying to get one from a scalper... but she couldn't. They didn't have any, because no one was willing to let them go, and the going rate was $140. I had paid $25 for mine from Ticketmaster when they went on. We finally got in, grabbed some beers and got up about 8 feet from the stage. The opening act was good, though not particularly ground-breaking, although I'll admit I don't know Amazing Baby at all. Still, they got a warm reception from the crowd. As they finished, the crowd around me got tighter and tighter. It was already a hot day, and there was literally a mass of people squeezed in around. I had to go to the bathroom somewhat badly, but wouldn't let anything risk me losing my spot up there. After what was easily 40 minutes after the opening act finished... Phoenix finally busted onto the dark stage, and all hell broke loose. As loud as their amps were (they were loud), the roar of the crowd around me was unbelievable. EVERYONE was losing their minds and cheering during the ENTIRE song, and singing along. Thomas just looked over at Deck and Laurent like "What the hell...??" many times throughout the performance. They couldn't believe the response. Between songs, Thomas would try to say something to the audience, but I don't think anyone heard anything, it was so loud. The entire show was an absolute experience. The moment Phoenix came on, the crowd lit up some joints, and a feeling of total euphoria washed over everyone. The whole set, spanning WAP, but also the classics from their other albums, was impeccably chosen without nearly any pause between songs. It's difficult to imagine a group of people at 100% insanity for for 1.5 hours, but it happened. When they tried to close the set, we wouldn't let them. As the second encore piece began (Thomas informing us this would TRULY be the last one), and the familiar intro to 1901 poured out that everyone was waiting for, insanity reached 150%. Thomas and the rest of the band were drenched in sweat, much like all of us, and reached deep into themselves to perform a euphoric version of 1901. Each time the chorus reached the familiar point of synthesizer climax and Thomas sang the refrain, the crowd seemed like it was put on this earth just for the purpose of hearing those 5 seconds of music. As the final chorus resounded, Thomas jumped into the audience, walked through it, all the while getting patted and his hair tussled (I patted him on the back ), and jumped onto a bar to repeat the chorus over and over with the crowd, while looking around slowly and seeming to absorb the whole moment with us. I don't know how the next part happened, but in the span of about 2 seconds, I noticed he had jumped down from the bar, and then reappeared on the stage for the final rally. Then, as quickly as Phoenix had come, they were gone. As people began to disperse, I realized my jeans and entire body looked like I had walked out of a rainstorm. My friends and I stood there, deaf, still taking in the whole experience. I walked directly up the stage where the roadies were packing up, a couple people beside me grabbed the set lists. I whipped out my sharpie and the CD booklet, but the roadies didn't want any part of it. Then the drummer came out briefly, who noticed me. I talked to him quickly, told him the show was awesome, and asked if he could get himself and the rest of the band to sign it. After some issues with the bouncer to the greenroom, he came back with it, signed by all the guys Very cool dude... All in all, I have to say it was a healing experience I will never forget. For 1.5 hours, a huge grin never left my face, and it really felt like I was in heaven (and I wasn't even drunk or high!). It was very surreal after having loved this band for so many years and waiting so long for a concert that I could stand a few paces from the stage, and pat Thomas Mars on the back. These guys are expert showmen without a hint of pretentiousness, masterful musicians, and amazing people all around. Even if you pay the scalper price (and if you can find a ticket), it will be worth it. It's truly indescribable. Just including a pic of the signed booklet and a photo I took from my iPhone during the first song.
