About

Talk about magic!

British comedy actors Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner have distilled all 4,200 pages of J. K. Rowling's seven Harry Potter novels into one brilliantly hilarious 70-minute show. Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience is a lovably loopy two-person performance in which a Potter know-it-all teams up with a rebellious Harry newbie to create a show about -- you guessed it -- Harry Potter.

Clarkson and Turner conceived the show in 2005 as a five-minute sidewalk synopsis to amuse customers queued up for Rowling's sixth Harry novel. They expanded it to an hour the following year and opened at Edinburgh's Zoo Southside. European tours ensued, and in 2012 Potted Potter was nominated for two Olivier Awards, the highest honor in British theater. The show made its off-Broadway debut the same year and has since toured all over the United States and the world. After opening in 2018, the family-friendly Las Vegas production won Best of Last Vegas Awards for Best New Production and Best Value Show.

One actor channels a bookish Harry in Potted Potter while another plays every other character -- including Ron and Hermione, Draco Malfoy, Snape, the Weasleys, Sirius Black, Mad-Eye Moody, Dumbledore and, of course, He Who Must Not Be Named -- with wild abandon. Loads of wigs and other goofy props are employed in a nonstop laugh fest that also features a fire-breathing dragon, countless costume changes, brilliant songs, a plethora of props and even a Quidditch match encouraging audience participation (but no brooms, alas).

Accessible to Potter freaks and newbies alike, Potted Potter blends slapstick in the Laurel & Hardy vaudeville tradition with the wildly witty dialogue associated with Monty Python's Flying Circus. "Potting" is a British term for "the art of summarizing something into a digestible form," and, like all the best parodies, Clarkson and Turner's Harry experience is both splendid spoof and heartfelt homage.

  • Potter Potter is hilarious!

by PottedFan on 2014-03-17National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

This two-man Harry Potter parody is unbelievably funny! The show is part behind-the-scenes arguing about how to mount the show and part straight-up summarizing of the seven Harry Potter books, pointing out some of the silly scenes, characters, and extraneous sub-plots. The performers included localized ad libs and audience participation to energize the audience. And even though they've been doing this for years, we could tell that they sometimes surprised each other with new gags and had to try not to laugh at each other's antics.

Absolutely amazing! The actors were hilarious and very interactive with the audience. Nothing to do with the event, however the view from the orchestra was not the greatest since the seats were not staggered.

  • Potted Potter non-stop laughfest

by Cats22 on 2014-03-15National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

We took in Potted Potter over March Break on a weekday matinee. The audence. Included many young wizard wannabes and some older folk too. The performance started in a low key manner with one actor quietly sitting on stage reading while the other glad- handed through the aisles shaking as many hands as he could reach. The slapstick one liners kept us laughing from the first line to the grand finale. The audience participation during a game of quidditch was amusing if somewhat uninspired attempt at scoring with the game results determined b a full body tackle of the snitch. Minimal props supported clever dialogue and charmin performers wooed a willing audence. Overall an enjoyable show for families who are well versed in The world of Harry Potter.

Having only seen half of one of the movies, I am not really up on all the details of the cult of Harry Potter. But, as it turns out, it didn't matter. This show was a rollicking good time, with plenty of inside jokes for the Potter-philes, and enough silliness to keep the rest of us well entertained. I am now totally inspired to read the whole series of books.

  • Potted Potter should come with a warning!!

by HockeyMom500 on 2014-03-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 5 out of 5

Warning: May laugh until you cry! British humour at its best! Will have you laughing from start to finish whether you're a Harry Potter superfan or not. Hilarious for kids and adults. It is fast paced, rapid fire humour. The actors interact with the audience and are obviously having a great time with each other. You could see it more than once because every audience would be different. Best part of our March Break by far!!

The show was hillarious, the guys are so quick witted and improvise amazingly well. Loved that they involved their audience.....I was picked as the keeper and picked on a few times but held my own....lol. If you get the chance, you have to go see them....don't expect anything in the way of props or staging....it's just them and they pull it off.

  • Lots of Energy - Kinda Pricey Though --

by SaloFamily on 2014-03-13National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

This is a high energy family show -perfect for those kiddies 7 - 12 years- this show will have them stomping their feet with laughter. This is a low budget bare bones production & reminded me of 2 college students on a part time birthday party gig doing ad-lib. ( Actually it really is I guess) The main actor does make an effort & come through the audience prior to the event to shake hands & say hello - nice touch - it will make the kids laugh -safe family entertainment -BUT very- very pricey for what it is --this should be more like a $25.00 / per person event - not $70.00
