About

Talk about magic!

British comedy actors Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner have distilled all 4,200 pages of J. K. Rowling's seven Harry Potter novels into one brilliantly hilarious 70-minute show. Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience is a lovably loopy two-person performance in which a Potter know-it-all teams up with a rebellious Harry newbie to create a show about -- you guessed it -- Harry Potter.

Clarkson and Turner conceived the show in 2005 as a five-minute sidewalk synopsis to amuse customers queued up for Rowling's sixth Harry novel. They expanded it to an hour the following year and opened at Edinburgh's Zoo Southside. European tours ensued, and in 2012 Potted Potter was nominated for two Olivier Awards, the highest honor in British theater. The show made its off-Broadway debut the same year and has since toured all over the United States and the world. After opening in 2018, the family-friendly Las Vegas production won Best of Last Vegas Awards for Best New Production and Best Value Show.

One actor channels a bookish Harry in Potted Potter while another plays every other character -- including Ron and Hermione, Draco Malfoy, Snape, the Weasleys, Sirius Black, Mad-Eye Moody, Dumbledore and, of course, He Who Must Not Be Named -- with wild abandon. Loads of wigs and other goofy props are employed in a nonstop laugh fest that also features a fire-breathing dragon, countless costume changes, brilliant songs, a plethora of props and even a Quidditch match encouraging audience participation (but no brooms, alas).

Accessible to Potter freaks and newbies alike, Potted Potter blends slapstick in the Laurel & Hardy vaudeville tradition with the wildly witty dialogue associated with Monty Python's Flying Circus. "Potting" is a British term for "the art of summarizing something into a digestible form," and, like all the best parodies, Clarkson and Turner's Harry experience is both splendid spoof and heartfelt homage.

I went to the play with a friend and our two 12 year old daughters. We loved it!! James & Joseph were a hilarious pair. There was never a dull moment. I loved how they included the audience and referred back to them throughout the play. They did an amazing job. I couldn't stop laughing throughout the play. We would definitely go and see it again.

This was soo good! I'm a big Potter fan and I loved every parodical moment of it. It was hilarious and extremely interactive with the audience which was a wonderful addition. I would highly recommend seeing Potted Potter to anyone, even if they haven't read the books or watched the movies! It was a great show and I had a great time!

My 12 year old and 15 year old didn't stop laughing the entire time. It was such a fun performance! The entire family highly enjoyed it.

Very entertaining show. The venue, Boyce Theatre, was the perfect - small and intimate. I was not familiar with the Harry Potter series, but my 12 year old daughter is obsessed with HP. The actors were so funny and really pulled off a great show. It was obvious some of the parts were impromptu and those parts were the most funny. I laughed for the entire hour and a half.

  • So funny!

Saw them on November 13, 2016 in Calgary. I had no idea what to expect due to the mixed reviews but let me tell you there was one point I hurt when I was laughing too much! The actors James and Joe were very interacting with the audience which was so nice to see. There was a good mix of family and some adult humor to keep all ages entertained. There is one thing to be said though, don't expect the typical Harry Potter story line as there are a few unexpected but hysterical twists in the show. Definitely recommend this to all ages.

  • Potted Potter was a must for the Harry Potter fan!

this show was so funny! it was harder to understand if you did not have a basic knowledge of Harry potter before hand as a lot of the jokes were based on the books/movies. tickets were a little pricey for what it was though.

  • Hilarious fun for Potter Heads!

If you are a Harry Potter fan, this is a must see! We seen this show in New York a few years back and as soon as we seen it was coming to town, we snagged tickets. Awesome funny show! Also, the venue was excellent - not a bad seat in the house.

  • A Fantastic Evening!

This was my first 'Potted' experience and I was very impressed. A very creative and funny show. The chemistry between James and Joe was unreal. Their ability to ad lib made the show more hysterical. If you are a fan of the Harry Potter series, this is a must see.

We were seated in the first row balcony and had a fantastic view of an unforgettable evening. Those boys were hilarious. We laughed so much we cried . I'm glad we decided to go, a great memory for sure.

The production was clever and witty. it was well based in the books with intelligent references to other similar books. Books' key points were well represented and presented in a humorous or satirical manner. The audience involvement sections were really great/ We laughed and laughed and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

The most hilarious thing I've ever seen in my life! Tears were running down my face I was laughing so hard. It was brilliant. The whole idea of this show is genius. Even when things happened unexpectedly (in an even more hilarious way) the actors never missed a beat. They improvised seamlessly and the jokes kept coming. Everyone should see this show. Whether you've read/seen Harry Potter or not, you'll love this show. Really words can't describe how great it is. If it comes back to Toronto next year, I'll definitely see it again. (The people who say it's not funny or it's just for children obviously don't have a sense of humour. And by the way the whole audience was laughing at the show I was at, it didn't matter what age, so I think someone else's 1 star review is very unreliable.)

  • Potted Potter good for the Potty

What a waste of my time and money. Wish I could get the time back. I was so disappointed and would not recommend it. The actors were not funny and the props were pathetic.

  • Don't waste your money

by Anonymous on 2014-12-29Panasonic Theatre - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

Biggest waste of time and money ever. I am a huge Harry Potter fan, and this is not geared toward Harry Potter fans. I did not laugh once, the only people laughing were the kids, and only because these guys were running around with silly props. This is geared toward kids who will laugh at anything. I wish it was stated that this was for 6 year olds. I cannot get over how dumb this thing was.

  • For KIDS ONLY.

by Jeferee on 2014-12-22Panasonic Theatre - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5

I have read all the books, seen all the movies and purchased all the Blu-Rays so, needless to say, I am a fan of all things Harry Potter. What I'm NOT a fan of, was this play. I'm not sure what I was expecting going into this but, what I got was 70 minutes of terrible slap-sticky comedy consisting (literally) of wig changes and awkward pauses. The only people laughing in the theatre were the kids and not because there were any clever references to the books or anything, but because there were two grown men yelling and making funny faces. I honestly don't understand what the reviews are all about. "Hilarious" or a "Triumph" this show is most certainly not but, if you have a young child, they will probably enjoy this show as that seems to be who it's geared toward. I just wish they had alluded to that in the reviews and it is definitely, DEFINITELY not worth the almost $100-per-ticket price tag!! So dumb, but at least it wasn't as bad as Our Country is Good.

by Bob21 on 2014-05-21National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 4 out of 5

We loved it from start to finish. Had no idea how they were going to accomplish such a feat as capturing all 7 Harry Potter books in the span of 90 minutes, but they did it in fine fashion. These two guys could come up with a story on the phone book or dictionary and make it funny. And to think they spared no expense on the set design as well. LOL. As the Title indicates, it was fun for all ages.

Potted Potter is a hilarious parody of all seven books with lots of jokes and a fun but peculiar game of Quidditch.
