Let's face it, there was only one Freddie Mercury and his stage presence, flambouyance and talent can not and should not attempt to be duplicated. I have been to various productions where the acts attempt to capture the essence of the original performance, and even though in most cases they are as faithful to the original as can be expected they lose credibility when you are familiar with the original. It's like watching a movie based on a book, it's designed to be entertaining but in the long run, unless it's exceptional, it's just a copy designed to entertain those unfamiliar with the original.
All that being said the performance was entertaining, well played and reproduced but at times strained the performer / original boundary. I would have been equally if not more entertained just listening to the group perform, they were excellent in that respect giving all credit due, but trying to copy the personalities and essence of the original performers, especially in the case of a group as well known as Queen, does not do them justice. I could use the plethora of Elvis impersonators as a perfect example, those performers who sing his well known songs as themselves and do them well are far more appreciated and recognised than the made up lounge singers that try to pass themselves off as the "king".
Bottom line, for those unfamiliar with Queen as a group it's a great introduction but give the archived footage of the original a look see for the real deal. For those who "know" and love Freddie and the group it's a great trip down memory lane taken with a grain of salt.
PS: This city is sadly lacking a quality facility for anything other than classical music type performances or stage plays. We NEED a facility that does rock, country, pop or any of the other strong musical styles justice, when the music is loud it overpowers with distortion and in the case of the older "classic" performers it's a shame to ruin what may be the only chance to see these people live.
