With their riff-heavy hard rock, California’s Queens of the Stone Age have become torchbearers for the brand of distorted, head-banging rock popularized by bands like The Smashing Pumpkins and Foo Fighters. 2013’s …Like Clockwork – their first album in six years – proved that time had not mellowed their hard-edged sound, earning praise from critics for its thrashing intensity and landing the band their first No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200. Tracks like “My God Is the Sun” and “I Sat by the Ocean” showcased their bridling ferocity and worked their way up the Alternative Songs chart, leaving little doubt that QOTSA are as on top of their game as ever. Founded in Palm Desert in the late ‘90s, the band would release several albums before teaming up with Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters on 2002’s hugely successful Songs for the Deaf, which earned the band their first Grammy nomination for hit single “No One Knows.” On tour in 2013, the band has been taking ticket buyers by storm with their muscular sound and their visually stunning live concerts.
They played a huge set, and sounded fantastic! I will definitely go see them next time they are in town!
It's a testament to the musicianship of QOTSA that I was still able to enjoy a concert that had such horrible sound quality. Everything except for the vocals seemed too loud and muddy. All the sounds just ran together. The facility had its own problems as well, the lineups for beer were excruciating, taking close to half an hour. If I wasn't a fan of the band, I'd have demanded my money back.
I've seen this band before, 5 years ago, and it was truly the best concert anyone could experience. The energy you can feel. The effort the band puts into the performance permeates throughout the crowd, and returns to them with great force. It is in its own form, a circle of life. Seeing them in the flesh was surreal. Years I've spent listening to their music, watching their interviews, reading articles of their many talents and successes. To see them was the highlight of my summer, the peak. The fact that it's over, pulls on my heartstrings. Knowing though that I got to see them, that I was there, right front and center; was a moment that is hard to explain. Until we meet again.
I've seen QOTSA three times now, twice in the Corral, and once in the Jube. The Corral has terrible acoustics, so I knew the sound would be a little sub-par. Fortunately the band's enthusiasm made up for it. It was a great show! Great set list, decent (albeit limited) crowd interaction, and overall a really fun time. It is pretty clear Josh and the gang just like being up there and playing; they seemed to be having a good time and the songs were well done (stuck close to the studio version, but still deviated enough to show some effort). All-in-all, a good show, especially for such a below-average venue.
One of the best shows ever! They sound fantastic live. I hope they come back to Calgary soon. Awesomeness at it's finest!
Best rock band to see live right now IMO. Their songs vary in styles and keep you interested from one song to the next.
Unreal show! These guys know how to play a proper set, starting and ending heavy and tossing their slower stuff in the middle. Highly recommended
Awesome experience! Tickets were reasonably priced and venue was great. I would defenatlly see them again!
While there should be no fault against QOTSA, the venue had the worst sound mixing I've encountered. The vocals were impossible to make out or even hear most of the night, and even regular talking between songs was garbled. We saw QOTSA at the SAIT Jubilee 2 years ago and it was an entirely different experience. It's unfortunate that the venue as sound mixers can do this much to harm a band but I certainly would not have recommended that concert.
Excellent. Played the songs you wanted to hear. Sounded great. Were what you wanted from Queens of the stone age
these guys are tight. Unbelievable!!! sound good wherever they play
This was a heavy rockin', head-bangin', crowd-surfin' show complete with creepy video back drop. If that's what you expect and are looking for from the Queens of the Stone Age - then this show delivered.
unbelievable, I would attend again and again and again...
It had been a few years wait to see them again but was worth the wait. They sounded so good. No one sounds like them.
Been a fan for a while, but had never seen QOTSA live. They were super loud and tight and the guitars sounded awesome. Highly recommend seeing these guys. The venue was awesome as well, the corral is small enough to feel intimate but big enough for a larger style production.
First off, who let their little sister's band open? They sounded like they played 1 continuous song then whole set... It was the worst reversed White Stripes doing The Yeah Yeah Yeahs I could imagine. I haven't walked away from a concert feeling that disappointed before. First half of the show you couldn't hear the entire left side of the stage. The highs were way off; the general instrument sound quality was far too loud compared to vocals, which were lost when more than 2 people were playing. Second half was better; you could actually hear vocals and the left side of the stage. Though I'd wished they would have had the ability to play more from "Songs for the Deaf", though it was tough with their subpar drummer. He proved his inadequacy by speeding up during “No One Knows” and causing the whole set to seem off. Bring back Dave, Mark and Nick… And get someone who can do sound. Honestly how do you screw up sound in the Jubliee Auditorium? That building was BUILT FOR MUSIC! It was their last show and it showed.
High energy, completely engaging what an amazing show!!! Music was supreme in the Jubilee highlighted their talent. So awesome!!
This concert was amazing. The atmosphere was great and they played their first album from begining to end. But the best part was when they came back out and asked the crowd to pick a song for them to play. It was the last stop on the tour and they were having fun along with the crowd. Getting to see your favourite band in a small venue and have them interacting with the crowd is an unforgettable experience. I'll never see a show like that again.
Qotsa performing their first album and then some. Killer !!! The Calgary jubilee has incredible sound. Perfect venue for one of the best live bands out there.
Last show of the tour was excellent, it is always nice to hear quality musicians performing at a venue with good accoustics., unlike the Dome. A couple of extra songs not on the prior set list per requests from the crowd added to the experience. Will definately catch them again when they come to Calgary.
