    Incredibly talented artist by far!

    by RayFan4Life on 2014-06-12Massey Hall - Toronto

When I first picked up a copy of Ray's 2014 album, Supernova, I had a few mixed reviews. I was so used to his folk/blues/country/soul style and wasn't ready for a new change. Little did I know that by listening to the album a few more times, I grew to love it! With regards to the show, I was completely blown away from his performance and the rest of the band. He started off with one of his older songs, played pretty much all of his new album and finished off with his classics. When it came to Ray and the bassist playing "Like Rock & Roll and Radio", I don't think I took a breath during the whole song. It was literally breathtaking. So pure, so much emotion, he was definitely singing from his heart. A true talent indeed. Can't wait to see what's next for Ray and to see him live again!

    electrified ray lamontagne truly supernova

by foodboy on 2014-06-12Massey Hall - Toronto

some may compare this to dylan going electric. refreshing new direction by this alt folk rock icon. old songs had new life and the newer material was simply great. the psychedelic rock direction of his new album supernova reminded me of pink floyd and the jefferson airplane at times. the album supernova was played in its entirety. for those who only expected a folk themed show this may have been disappointed, but this was a refreshing change.his band was tight and the harmonies provided by the the 2 main members of the belle brigade worked well. he even had much more interaction with the audience who were constantly calling out to him. as one called out a specific song to be played he politely said i will tell you now i haven't played that song for 6 years so i'm letting you know now it's not going to be played so you won't scream it at me all night. for those who missed this show you really missed something special especially in todays era of pop hits and lame music

Great show. I was so happy to get the chance to see him live. Wish I could have seen him on a previous tour or that he had played more of his older stuff. I had read this venue had great acoustics. Not sure if it was my seats (upper back section) or the sound set-up for this show but I didnt find them to be the best

    Ray lost his soul

by freewill on 2014-06-11Massey Hall - Toronto

First of all, the sound mix was all bass and lyrics couldn't be understood (neither could his stage banter, but that's sadly because there wasn't any). I liked the drummer, the band, the harmonies, and the keyboard/guitarist's dance moves. But it felt a little like Dylan at Newport when he went electric. Not what we expected! I wasn't immediately won over by the new album material (at least the muddy mix that came out the speakers). For the first half of the show they sounded like a pretty good Moody Blues cover band. I was gratified to hear his three acoustic "oldies" done with his bass player. Jolene, after all was the reason I came, and I liked the low harmony added. Then back to more electric pop stuff, which sounded ok mostly, but it wasn't the profound, soulful, skin melting Ray I had been expecting. I guess he moved on. I guess I'm not likely to follow.

    Soulful Ray LaMontagne

by KatherineZax on 2014-06-11Massey Hall - Toronto

I fell in love with Ray LaMontagne's music long before I came to Canada, and I was over the moon to know that he is coming to Toronto and I actually have an opportunity to visit his concert. It was unforgettable... Massey Hall is a legendary place, first of all. Just as you come in you can feel its extraordinary atmosphere, as of those old, true folk songs with the warm sounds of acoustic guitar. It feels like it is one of those precious places where living people still dared to exchange ideas; an enveloping feeling of home. It immerses you so deep into its atmosphere, that for 2 or 3 hours you are carried away to another world; that might be one of the reasons this concert had a surprisingly deep influence on my thoughts and dreams, I would say. WIth this concert Ray LaMontagne presented his mew album "Supernova", but he also performed the beloved "Jolene" and a couple of other old songs. Was it good? It was truly reaching and gripping, to say the least; for me, it has actually even transformed the perception of his old songs, and his music as a whole. It is unbelieveble how different is the music you hear in your headphones and the one you hear performed live. I love his music for making you feel the things you have never experienced in your life; for those true and sincere moments of hapinness, that are entirely created by his songs inside your mind. And every time listening to his songs, you go back to that beautiful world, that you have never really been in. The concert of Ray LaMontagne at Massey Hall is one of those evenings you would want to remember for the rest of your life, as you would never want to let the feelings created by his music go away.

New album is not what we were expecting from ray

by Momochee on 2014-06-11Massey Hall - Toronto

We were so excited o see Ray for the second time. The first time that we saw him, he was with the Pariah Dogs at the Amphithetre. This concert was unforgettable and Ray rocked the house. Massey Hall was more of an intimate concert venue, however since the seats were installed in the early 1900's we didn't fit comfortably and ended up picking splinters out of our knees afterwards. We sat in the right gallery and couldn't see Ray unless we sat forward and stretched our necks out. The problem with this was that everyone in the gallery was doing the same thing, so nobody could see. He also wasn't set up in the centre of te stage which made it even more difficult to see him and we were forced to watch his keyboard player the entire show. At times it seemed as though the sound engineer wasn't doing his job because we could hardly hear rays voice as the psychedelic electric sound was overpowering.

    Could have been better

by MSandSW on 2014-06-11Massey Hall - Toronto

I'll start off by saying that it's my boyfriend who is the Ray Lamontagne fan, not me. That said, it was an enjoyable concert, however, we both felt the sound was off. I think some of it was Ray's singing, which was rather low, but often, you could barely hear his voice. Also, at one point when the opening band, The Belle Brigade was playing, there was severe feedback from one of the amps. I now know not to get any of the side seats at Massey Hall, because you really only hear part of the music.

    Ray was captivating

by DaveDude on 2009-11-17State Theatre - Minneapolis

Saw Ray at the State Theatre and he totally blew us away. During his first song you could have heard a pin drop. His voice was unreal and the sound was amazing. Gorgeous theatre! He was witty and handled the crowd very intelligently. Lots of humour. Can't wait to see him again!

    Great artist...but worst crowd ever!

by DanfromMontreal on 2009-11-07Beacon Theatre - New York

It was my 5th show of Ray, the second in NYC in over a year. I discovered him during the International Jazz festival of Montreal in 2004. Thursday night, I was on the Orchestra Level and I soon realized that the crowd did'nt have any respect during the show. The exit door, at the very back, the go into the lobby was constently open loudly. It was simply terrible...especially when you want to enjoy an acoutisc show! Again, Ray was great ...but the Beacon and the crowd.....0 / 10. A fan from Montreal, Canada!
