ROYAL WOOD IN CONCERT:

Canadian singer-songwriter Royal Wood boasts a sound as distinguished as his name. His expertly crafted compositions feature an assortment of lush orchestral instruments, and an arsenal of talented players bring songs like "Forever and Ever" and "Not Giving Up" to life at his live shows. Wood always delivers on tour with his charismatic demeanor and virtuosic piano skills, and his 2014 album The Burning Bright has anticipation for future tour dates at fever pitch.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born and raised in the Canadian city of Petersborough, Wood grew up immersed in music, taking up the piano at age four and dabbling in a variety of other instruments during grade school. While studying business at McGill University, he spent time performing in various Montreal jazz clubs, honing his songwriting and guitar skills. His 2003 debut release The Milkweed EP drew significant praise from critics, paving the way for his equally acclaimed 2004 full-length debut Tall Tales. The album drew Wood comparisons to luminaries Jeff Buckley and the Beach Boys, encouraging him to write his most ambitious material yet for sophomore album A Good Enough Day, which featured extensive orchestration and guest musicians like Hawklsey Workman and Kurt Winghammer. In 2012, Wood landed on Canadian charts with his fourth LP We Were Born to Glory, following up in 2014 with The Burning Bright and an accompanying tour.

Royal Wood is smooth as silk!

by Merrel on 2015-02-18Arden Theatre - St Albert

My third time to see RW live and he never disappoints! I could sit endlessly and listen to him perform. Although lovely to look at, I close my eyes to truly appreciate his voice. He injects humour and engages the audience throughout his show so you sense he really does enjoy performing for his fans. I highly recommend his CDs too but I'll jump at the next opportunity to see him live!!

Royal was a joy ---love his rich voice.

by MGMm on 2015-02-16Arden Theatre - St Albert

His material is solid and now he has added two great female back up vocalists. Full sound. The Arden is such a prefect venue for him too. Only drawback was the lighting. Not quite aligned with the cues. Also sound was best when Royal was at the front mic but when he was at the piano, hard to pick out the lyrics. Always enjoyable performance. Good to see it was appreciated by the crowd. Looked to be sold out both nights.

    Royal Woods disappointing

by MikeFera on 2014-05-22Winter Garden Theatre - Toronto

I am a big fan of royal and have all his albums but his first EP and have seen him 6 times live, most recently at the wintergarden in Toronto. If you were sitting in the balcony, as i was, you spent most of the concert with 6 spotlights shining in your eyes. Back lighting is a nice effect, but having the lights directed into the face of the audience kept the audience on its hands and made it very hard to see the performers. Although the new album is good, there should be more room to play some of royal's excellent earlier material - The Waiting, Lady in White, The Glory and many other songs that are strong live. In the past Royal's material has sounded better live; his new material sounds better on the album, perhaps because he uses horns, an organ, banjo, accordion etc in the studio.

    Royal is the King

by MartinL on 2014-05-13National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

One of the best shows I have ever seen. Incredible talent. Unbelievable that Royal Wood is not yet an international star. I've rarely seen an Ottawa crowd get so worked up. Peter Kratz was very good in the opening act.

The show was fantastic! Because of the smaller sized venue this made the show intimate and the sound fantastic. Royal is charismatic and entertaining...very talented and smooth sounding voice he is a pleasure to listen to...so proud to support Canadian artist Royal Wood!

Royal Wood and his Band are Tight and Professional

by Budsplace on 2013-01-14National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - Ottawa

The "old soul" of Royal Wood's songwriting, and the musical talent of his four piece backing band brilliantly combined their respective talents to deliver a very uplifting and truly delightful musical experience. Mr. Wood has honed his ever expanding musical talents with a very capable and tightly rehearsted group of musicians to clearly display his emerging maturity as very touching singer/songwriter. He left this fan wishing that evening and the performance would not end so quickly. I'll be back for more if he should return.

Good enough musician but the sound balance seemed off and the songs were repetitive. Nice to listen to but boring.

    Wood shiny and polished

by Sheltie on 2012-11-12Molson Canadian Studio at Hamilton Place - Hamilton

This was the third time seeing Royal Wood and each time has better. The singer songwriter and his bandput on an great night of song and stories. The sound was true to the recordings. Elisapie and her band were the opener. They were a great suprise and worth seeing if she appears elsewhere with Royal or someone else.

    Royal indeed!

by SugarrBearr on 2012-11-12Winter Garden Theatre - Toronto

Royal Wood is a superb Canadian talent. He has matured as a musician and singer immensely. His variety of sounds is truly special. His band, led by Dean Drouillard, is incredibly tight and versatile. He moved easily and seamlessly between singing, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and grand piano. His musical prowess was most evidenced on the piano, with a wonderful combination of soft tones and firm, powerful chords. His wife Sarah Slean came on to sing (on We Were Born to Glory, I think?), which added a great touch to the evening. His commentary was unique - telling stories from the heart, ranging from a song about a friend who lost his grandparents, to the approach he took to writing his new album in Montreal after a long road tour. Royal Wood is the next major musical force in Canada!

    Great concert

by RWFan on 2012-11-12Winter Garden Theatre - Toronto

The whole show was great. He had a very good opening act; Elisapie Isaac . She sang well accompanied by 2 musicians. She was a delight. Royal Wood and his band are well rehearsed and professional. I enjoyed the music and his great sense of humour. After the show, he was on hand to sign autographs; I even had my picture taken with him. I am looking forward to his next one. I would love to see him and his wife, Sarah Slean together singing on stage.
