I loved the orchestra, the singers and the dancers. The conductor was excellent and very engaging. Overall a very good performance and no changes to recommend to the repertoire or the performance itself.
What was really taking away from the concert was the absolute lack of a festive ambiance, for example no decorations, simple chairs for the orchestra players without slip covers and the casual attire of women who played in the orchestra. When you watch the concert from Vienna, you see the concert hall filled with gold and an abundance of flowers. In Ottawa, on the New Year’s Day, the stage was bare with only one simple bouquet of flowers so it looked like any other concert day I attended.
When it comes to the attire of women musicians, I found pants and black sweaters as opposed to long skirts or black evening dresses really taking away from the elegance of the performance. Because of the above, the Salute to Vienna in Ottawa looked like a poor cousin of the concerts happening in Vienna. Recommendation: Add many festive decorations to the black walls, including gold or silver chair covers for the orchestra, and introduce evening attire for orchestra players for that day and the concert will be a very special one to remember.
