I've been sent to "Salute to Vienna" for over 10 years now. I absolutely love it, it feels a little bit like home. My favorite part of ringing in the New Year!
It was a totally delightful performance and the Orpheum Theatre is a suitable setting. Too bad my companion, the grump, who was there under duress, wasn't happy BUT he was clapping for the Radetsky March. I thought the live performance was even better than the concert from Vienna on TV the night before! BRAVO to all the performers.
The Concert was lovely. We both found the tenor's voice to be a tad soft. . .; .one could hardly hear him over the orchestra at times. The soprano was outstanding. Would have preferred 4 male ballet dancers to balance off the 4 females. The music. . .though. . .timeless and very well done. We all enjoyed the conductor's special encore involving the receptive audience. Thank you.
A Salute to Vienna is the perfect way to start the New Year ! I enjoyed the commentary of Mr Richter and his little stories and jokes were a bonus. I only wish it were an evening performance.
As usual was great....conductor ..interesting but asking for too many bows; cellist was amazing....local ? soprano was wonderful, tenor just okay. Was disappointed that , at the end of performance, there was no professional ballroom dancers dancing the waltz, actually, per the program, at other cities there were but not Vancouver. Feel so strongly about it, that I will not go next year (have gone for last 6years) if ballroom dancers are not included.
How can you describe a musical visit to Herr Strauss’s Wien? Magical, vibrant, a city alive with classical music. This is almost as good as being in Vienna, Austria. The beauty of song and dance was captured by Atilla Glatz’s production of “A Salute to Vienna” which was held in Calgary this Sunday. All I can say is Bravo!! Well Done!! I will be back next year.
I love the ability to se Salute to Viena in Vancouver and have been regular attendant in last 10 years. Every year I found concert to be better and better. However, this year the concert did not quite live up to my expectations. The whole concert was in "lower" tone (I believe it's called alegro) and did not convey joyfulness of the peaces as it usualy does. Soprano was wonderful. but tenor not quite up to par. All in all it was pleasurable, but not to the usual hight standard and it certainly made me think if I'll be coming back next year.
It was an unforgettable afternoon of beautiful music, graceful and inspiring dance, singing by the soprano and tenor artists that gave you goose bumps it was so breathtakingly lovely and a conductor that had a wonderful sense of humour and ability to relate short stories. We would not have missed it for the world. We have attended these concerts for four years in a row now and they are now an essential part of our holiday season celebrations. Thank you to all that are involved in making this exceptional gift available to us each year.!!!!!
Elegantly performed by all the dancers, orchestra and the very intertainig conductor BRAVO to all of you ,and thank you
Excellent performances by all participants. Conductor very entertaining. The stage background could have been nicer. Like projecting a picture of an Austrian castle or landscape. Offering complimentary coffee and strudel following the performance was a nice touch, where people mingle with friends or meet new ones.
What can you say about the music of Strauss ,enjoyable, yes ,Relaxing ,yes. Entertaining ,always. How do you wind down after the hustle and bustle of Christmas ? Where do we go to unwind after the excess food and the joy of good wine and good friends ! WE TAKE OUR BEST FRIEND OUR WIFE AND OUR FAMILY TO AN EVENT TO START THE YEAR TOGETHER AND WHERE ELSE CAN YOU GO. TO ENJOY VIENNA AT HOME.
This year we decided to take our 3 children (all under 7 years) to Salut to Vienna. What an excellent way to kick off the New Year. The conductor was witty and entertaining, the Soprano singers were outstanding and the ballet dancers were a true joy to watch. The music of Strauss filled the concert hall. The music was upbeat and lively and ended with a grand finale. Most of all the children were entertained. This was the best concert that I have seen in a long time.
Salute to Vienna is a fantastic event. I recommend it to every music lover.
I was disappointed. My husband and I went last year and were very impressed with the quality and performance. This year we brought 3 family members and 2 friends and were eagerly looking forward to a good concert. The ballroom dancers were missing. The ballet dancers were okay but definitely not excellent. The conductor was acceptable but in my opinion was not able to engage the orchestra and us like last year. The tenor was soso and the soprano performed better and was better dressed after the intermission. The dress she wore before intermission was too tight and needs to be retired. I found myself constantly looking forward to the next piece and feeling disappointed time and again. My husband and I both left thinking that we do not need to come back and that the $ 500.- were ill spent. Incidently I did notice that Toronto got all the excellent performers we had last year and I think that it is better to restrict the concerts to a few cities with outstanding performances then to fill more concerts with medeocre artists. If the performance is not going to be up to snuff then the price could be reduced?????
Superb! Everything was perfect accept perhaps that sitting behind the singers we couldn't hear clearly.
My first time evern attending such a concert in my 61 years and I would surely hope to return to others in the very near future.
The performance was exemplary. Every aspect of the evening was entertaining with smooth performances and exceptional opera! The dancing was perfect but due to the lack of space... it is clear their expertise and talent could not be fully displayed. It is wonderful to have the full orchestra on stage as they are, clearly, the core and strength of the evening. WELL DONE!
Enjoyed the music very much. Unfortunately seating in upper balcony I missed most of the ballet and operatic movements which were blocked by heads of the lower balcony audience. Perhaps the stage line could be moved back one foot, that would give the upper balcony audience an opportunity to see the entire show. As it was, missed most of the show at front stage. M. Richter's conducting was superb, Both Ms Lukacs and M. Vadasz voices were premiere. Dancers were marvelous from as much as I could see of them. Would have loved to see their entire routine. Bottom line: I would recommend this event to friends, who can afford orchestra or lower balcony seats.
It was an absolutely beautiful performance. The music was so easy to listen to and the singing was wonderful with the great range in vocals. My wife and I truly enjoyed the performances of the ballet dancers and their costumes. Would highly recommend it to our friends.
