Everything about this show could not have been more perfect. First the venue. Deer Lake Park in Burnaby, BC, is beautiful. I've been to a few other outdoor venues but this one is amazing. The sound quality was dead on. The opening act was Arkells, a band from Hamilton, ON. Very good, hooky band that we will probably hear more of in the near future. Their song "John Lennon" I particularly liked and is a real crowd pleaser. Next up was Mother Mother, an up and coming band from Vancouver. Now this band is quite different and may take some getting used to for some people but I loved them from the first time I heard "Body of Years" on the radio. And they certainly don't disappoint live. Their sound is very structured and intricate with amazing harmonies provided by the two female keyboard players behind the male lead, a la B-52s but in this case the male lead can really sing. Their style is like a combination of Modest Mouse and Primus.
And then Sam Roberts. This guy is an icon in the making. Can he put on a show. It's rare to hear a band sound as good live as they do in the studio, which actually was the case for all three bands, but especially so for Mr. Roberts and crew. Before it's all over he will be right up there with Bruce Springsteen as a must see live act. I've never seen anyone with so much intensity on stage and his band is amazing.
I would definitely recommend seeing any of the three bands featured in this concert.
