Deer, deer, play it again Sam!!

by Chisel on 2009-08-04Deer Lake Park - Vancouver

High energy right from the get go, and Sam kept the pedal to the metal for the rest of the night. Sam Roberts didn't close the night from the first two acts; he was the night!! Montreal should be proud to have another solid rock preformer come out of that city. We are grateful Sam, so please come back soon, eh!

Sam Roberts and his band put on one of the most high-energy performances that I have seen in a while! Roberts rocked the crowd and the crowd loved him for it!

"Them Kids" do know how to dance to rock 'n' roll!

by angus7179 on 2009-08-04Deer Lake Park - Vancouver

Let me say that this was my first concert at Deer Lake Park, and it could not have been more beautiful. The setting was definetly weather-permitting but the conditions were perfect. That is without taking the music into consideration!! I had never heard of The Arkwells, but it was great to see a Canadian band up there rocking out. The singer had a good voice and overall it was pretty good for an opening act. Mother Mother has got some radio play so I did know a few of their songs, but even if I did not it still would have been awesome. They have a really peculiar sound, what with 2 female singers and one guy, but it's always cool to hear something different. I am now a fan. Sam Roberts was exactly what I expected, which is good because I came into the concert with very high standards! He had so much energy and was such a good showman. His voice never wore out and he sang amazing all night. I was near the front of the stage where all the real fans were, which really was the place to be. Everyone was singing/dancing/clapping. It was a really fun, memorable night out with friends and I think that is what everyone else there took away from the concert.

    sam rocks!

by VCRG on 2009-08-04Deer Lake Park - Vancouver

we give this sam roberts show 7/10 jean jackets. sam and the band are always excellent... we've seen them play 12 times before. this show was no exception... i subtract points a bit for the venue. deer lake park is beautiful, but the sound is not great - depending on where you're standing... and the parking situation is completely ridiculous. unless you arrive very early, you're looking at parking pretty far away. we walked for almost 20 minutes to get in. especially frustrating when you see all the empty spots that are in the "reserved lots". this show had 3 reserved lots that were half full.

    Was awesome!

by AH1974 on 2009-08-04Deer Lake Park - Vancouver

Started out good, then got lame, then saved good songs like Them Kids and Don't Walk Away Eileen till encore. Where Have All the Good People Gone was good in regular performance, too. The last song went on too long, and was too psychedelic for me! That's when I left! All in all, a great show! Great natural setting, too!

    AHHHH!

by Errin on 2009-08-04Deer Lake Park - Vancouver

Holy moly, where to start. The Arkells were really good! Cool music and a crazy keyboardist :D. Mother Mother was amazing, they have such a cool sound and look great on stage. They really got the crowd moving! It was also really awesome being so close to the stage! I was had about two or three other people in front of me. So it was pretty choice. Sam played an amazing show. The sound was great and the crowd was really fun. Awesome show! Also, after the show we got to meet and get pictures with the arkells and mother mother so that was unforgettable.

    meh

by ratlas on 2009-08-04Deer Lake Park - Vancouver

stage was nothing special. sam only did one solo jam with his guitar that lasted just enough to think he cared. but the last 10 minutes when the band threw down the lamest melody & it was pathetic. there is a reason why soft rock jamming doesn't make it on his CD

Sam Roberts makes a great headliner!

by Bdot on 2009-08-04Deer Lake Park - Vancouver

Seen him only before as an opening act which was good, but as a headliner he rocked hard all night putting on a great show in a great outdoor venue. The only reason not a 5 because Mother Mother was disappointing in one of the singers continued to sing so nasally it started to irritate me a bit and take away from the music. All in all a great show and look forward to hearing more from the Arkells as well.

    great music under the stars

by lundy on 2009-08-04Deer Lake Park - Vancouver

Sam Roberts knows how to get the crowd going and Deer Lake Park is the perfect place to lay back and be entertained. Roberts just keeps getting better and better. Mother Mother was not impressive as it was difficult to figure out where a song began and where it ended. There music is better recorded than live. This is a shame.

    Excellent from opening to end

by Trog on 2009-08-04Deer Lake Park - Vancouver

Everything about this show could not have been more perfect. First the venue. Deer Lake Park in Burnaby, BC, is beautiful. I've been to a few other outdoor venues but this one is amazing. The sound quality was dead on. The opening act was Arkells, a band from Hamilton, ON. Very good, hooky band that we will probably hear more of in the near future. Their song "John Lennon" I particularly liked and is a real crowd pleaser. Next up was Mother Mother, an up and coming band from Vancouver. Now this band is quite different and may take some getting used to for some people but I loved them from the first time I heard "Body of Years" on the radio. And they certainly don't disappoint live. Their sound is very structured and intricate with amazing harmonies provided by the two female keyboard players behind the male lead, a la B-52s but in this case the male lead can really sing. Their style is like a combination of Modest Mouse and Primus. And then Sam Roberts. This guy is an icon in the making. Can he put on a show. It's rare to hear a band sound as good live as they do in the studio, which actually was the case for all three bands, but especially so for Mr. Roberts and crew. Before it's all over he will be right up there with Bruce Springsteen as a must see live act. I've never seen anyone with so much intensity on stage and his band is amazing. I would definitely recommend seeing any of the three bands featured in this concert.

Arkells and Sam Roberts were both great! Really enjoyed the venue.
