Biography by Steve Huey
Dancehall superstar Sean Paul began scoring hit singles in Jamaica starting in 1996 and thereafter steadily began attracting international attention, eventual breaking into the pop mainstream in 2002 with Dutty Rock. Born Sean Paul Henriques on January 8, 1973, the multi-ethnic Paul (his parents had Portuguese, Chinese, and Jamaican blood) grew up comfortably in St. Andrew, Jamaica, his mother a renowned painter. He was a skilled athlete, excelling in swimming and especially water polo, playing for the Jamaican national team in the latter. Although his education was enough to land a prosperous career, dancehall music remained Paul's first love, particularly crafting rhythm tracks. He became a DJ after he began writing his own songs, patterning his style largely after Super Cat and finding a mentor in Don Yute; he also found contacts in several members of the reggae-pop band Third World in 1993, which helped open up business connections.
Paul released his debut single, "Baby Girl," with producer Jeremy Harding in 1996; it proved a significant success, leading to further Jamaican hits like "Nah Get No Bly (One More Try)," "Deport Them," "Excite Me," "Infiltrate," and "Hackle Mi." In 1999, Sean Paul started to make inroads to American audiences; he was first commissioned to collaborate with fellow dancehall hitmaker Mr. Vegas on a production for rapper DMX; titled "Here Comes the Boom," the song was included in director Hype Williams' film Belly. Also that year, Paul scored a Top Ten hit on the Billboard rap charts with "Hot Gal Today." Unfortunately, Paul had a very public falling out with Mr. Vegas over the packaging of the latter's remix of "Hot Gal Today"; still, it didn't slow Paul's career momentum, as he played the Summer Jam 2000 in New York City, the center of his American popularity. That fall, Paul released his first album on VP Records; the sprawling Stage One collected many of Paul's previous hit singles and compilation cuts, plus a few brand-new tracks. 2002's Dutty Rock and 2005's The Trinity were extremely successful. Both albums peaked in the Top Ten of the album chart and featured a handful of mainstream smashes.

Not a very well organized event. The gates opened 2 hours late and almost 2 hours after the show was supposed to start. They cut 2 of the opening acts but should have cut 3 of them if not all. With everything starting so late, they cut the time the main acts performed but still managed to have a dj playing for 15-20 min between acts. Don't really get that since we were all there to see the performers, not a dj. The main acts didn't even have time to perform all of their hits. The acts themselves were all great. Everyone sounded amazing and we had a blast. I'd go again but now I know what to expect.
Although the show started late and there seemed to also be some sound issues throughout, the concert was good overall. It would have been nice if the performers were projected on the screen so people in the back could see better.
Great venue. My first time there and loved it. The DJ was awesome. The crowd was fun and respectful. And Sean Paul was AMAZING
It seemed to be organized and moved along according to the schedule. However, Brandy forgot the words to her songs, and Sean Paul's energy wasn't there. He seemed gased out right from the beginning.
Good entertainment! worth the money paid! Location was good too.
What an amazing show! First opening act dylan james was AMAAAZING. everybody that i went with had such an amazing time! sean paul is a great performer aswell! thank god i went!
I was so disapointed with the whole evening. Sean Paul himself was entertaining, but most of the opening acts? What were they thinking? You'd think they'd want people to have a good time, not bore them with slow songs and annoy them with 20 minutes of harmonica. I want my 3 hours and 40 dollars back.
zzzzzzzz total let-down. poor energy. only highlights are his back-up dancers
The tickets stated doors opened @ 8pm. They wouldn't open the doors until 9pm. Freezing temperatures outside made the stand for an hour quite rediculous. Pre-show DJ's played good upbeat new hits. I enjoyed the pre-show events. For how long I anticipated this show and how long our group of 13 friends waited, Sean Paul could have been on stage longer. That was a major disappointment for me. Two towers entertainment did a pretty good job at promoting the event, I enjoy most of their events.
The concert was a bust. The opening acts were very amateur. They didn't have stage presence or the "it" factor associated with their performance. The MC had to read off of a cheat sheet and when he had to stall he actually admitted he had to stall instead of trying to make it a smooth transition. Karl Wolf was decent. He at least used the stage and did an okay job performing. Sean Paul hardly played any songs of his new CD. Not to mention he was only on stage for about 45 minutes. Every song he played sounded like the one before it. He hardly used the stage. Overall very poor concert. Waste of money!
ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!!!!! WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!!!!! NEVER EVER EVER GOING BACK TO THE SOUND ACADAMY EVER AGAIN!!!
IT was an amazing show. THE lineup amazing. Got to listen to a newer artist and many of them Lived up to my standard. Dylan James has an interesting tune with his songs. very interesting Mugz from Montreal brought back na old school feeling for me, He was Amazing Bad News Brown, MAN his Harmonica skills were amazing AND unique. Carl Wolf, WOW I can believe I got to see him LIVE in concert. So Vibrant AND SEAN PAUL, Was an hour of Bliss dancing to every song.
The concert blew my mind. I'd never been to Sound Academy before, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but it definitely was an unforgettable experience. I loved how there were so many opening acts and they were short and fun. It barely felt like three hours had gone by, and of course being super close to the front was awesome, too! It was extremely crowded, but survivable. A fantastic night, nonetheless.
Hey all, I went as a guest to this event for a friends birthday as i am not a huge fan! I was actually impressed. Although the tickets said 7pm and it didnt start until 8pm and sean paul didnt come on until 1000pm. That was all ook.. they had a DJ spinning the whole hour prior to the first opening act as well as alcoholic beverages. Between each set the DJ was spinning so i felt i was at a club the entire time!! It was awesome!! Dancin and having a good time. There were 4 opening acts.. all decent.. Overall had a great time, wish i didnt have to work in the morning the next day otherwise I would have stayed later.. Also, when sean paul was finished the DJ was still spinning and alcohol was still being served.. so we got to stay and dance and have a good time! It was great!!! I would go again!!
My friends and I went to see the Sean Paul concert last night....there were 4 opening acts, of which 3 were mediocre - very disappointed. Sean Paul came on late and his performance lasted only 40 minutes or so - I was surprised when the DJ started thanking the crowd for coming out! Sean Paul himself was awesome...he is an electric performer but not enough of him...
The Sean Paul concert was amazing last night!! Sean sounds just as good live and he does on recording or the radio.. and the other artists that went on before him were also all amazing!
event was great dean paul was awesome. Opening acts we also great.
It was quite some time ago but i remember it so vivdly cause it was my first concert in canada and where i went with friends instead of with family. It was so good, he was great and i hope to see him again soon.
