About

Originating in Huntington Park, CA in 1981 as a cover band in the head-banging scene, Slayer has become one of the most important metal bands in rock history, commonly referred to in the Big 4 alongside Anthrax, Megadeath and Metallica. Their first two albums, 1983’s Show No Mercy and 1985’s Hell Awaits, were released on Metal Blade Records, before they signed to Rick Rubin’s Def Jam label in 1986. There they released their third album Reign in Blood, which caught mainstream attention and has proved to be a genre-defining thrash metal album, influencing countless bands as well as the subgenres of death metal and black metal. Tom Araya’s shouted vocals and graphic lyrics are thought-provoking and articulate, while their tight musical structures combining hardcore rock’s rhythms and speed metal’s frenzied pace generate fast and aggressive songs, intensified through the use of double bass drumming, and unconventional but engaging guitar riffs. This all-out rock offensive has been wowing ticket holders for over three decades, selling out concerts across the globe. Over the years, Slayer has been nominated for five Grammy awards, most recently 2009’s World Painted Blood, and continues to tour while working on new material.

    Battle of the Titans

by dublunsky on 2009-07-16Rexall Place - Edmonton

First time since 1991 Clash of the Titans tour have Megadeth and Slayer shared the same stage...Well worth the wait...Both bands--even though well into their forties--have energy to burn...I say both bands because as co-headliners, they were alternating closing in different cities...Up first, was Megadeth...In this condensed showcase of approximately an hour per headliner, a volley of hit songs ensued...Hangar 18, Shewolf, Peace Sells, you get the idea...Played to absolute perfection....New addition Chris Broderick fits in very nicely with the rest of the band and handled any lead duties competently and with a smile on his face the whole time...Dave Mustaine was in absolute superb form, demonstrating why he really is a top-caliber guitarist in thrash metal--all of metal for that matter...Closers Slayer stepped up to the plate and absolutely took things up to 11...Again in this co-headliner format treated to Angel of Death, Raining Blood, Dead Skin Mask, and even a new number from their forthcoming studio album.... Musicianship abounds in this band...Dave Lombardo has got to be one of metal's great drummers absolutely holding down the bottom...Not to be outdown of course is dual leads--Jeff and Kerry--soloing and riffing to perfection...Highlight for me was Dead Skin Mask...Absolutely great metal showcase

    Terrible sound, rushed performances

by Canadian on 2009-07-16Rexall Place - Edmonton

I have seen both Megadeth and Slayer on separate occasions, both at Shaw Conference center with waaaay better sound. Rushed performance due to time restrictions, skipped intros, no talking and didn't look like either band really cared. Horrible sound, TURN DOWN THE BASE DRUM PLEASE! Slayer was the only band that had decent sound, still way to loud on the base drum, could not hear the guitars or vocals. Overall pretty lacking performance considering the bands.

    2009 Canadian Carnage tour

by OldSchool on 2009-07-16Rexall Place - Edmonton

This was a great lineup with Megadeth, Slayer, Machine Head and Suicide Silence. Although SS were not my style vocals wise (screaming), the band was good, the other acts were very much my style and they kicked butt! I would definatly like to see this be a yearly thing if possible ,with differant acts every year.

Was the greatest way to spend my B-day.... fantastic show... Metal forever.... loud, clean sound, great music, shredding guitars, mind numbing bass and drums and banging my head to songs from my misspent teenage years....

    A True Evening of Metal

by GwarMarr on 2009-07-16Rexall Place - Edmonton

SLAYER....& MEGADETH, It simply does not get much better than that, except when it's on a Friday night! Both Groups sounded great and It was great to see Dave Mustaine of Megadeth in a GOOD mood, a stark contrast to the diva like antics he pulled last time he visited the city of Champions

    Slayer KILLED it!

by Blackstar on 2009-07-16MTS Centre - Winnipeg

You enter the building and realize you have a big damn line to go through. 'Dammit' you think to yourself. 'I wonder how long the beer line will be?' The many alcohol stands served to fix that so the wait wasn't that long. What's this I hear? Machine Head? Thank God I missed Suicide Silence, I heard they were garbage. You drink your beer slowly as you watch the other people rocking out, you will only mosh to Megadeth and Slayer - that was your plan from the beginning. You prepare for an onslaught of steamy, sweaty guys and one girl in the moshpit for the next two hours...and boy what a sweaty, steamy sausage fest that was. You emerge victorious from the nights slaughter from a barage of extreme moshing thanks to 'Peace Sells, but who's Buying?', 'Symphony of Destruction', 'Skin o' My Teeth' and a new single called 'Head Crusher' from Megadeth, followed soon by classics such as 'Angel of Death', 'Raining Blood', 'South of Heaven' and 'Jihad' from Slayer. Other tracks were in there to, but those serve as standouts but overall the music was amazing, each and every track.

    Awesome metal show!

by stuntbumskater on 2009-07-16Rexall Place - Edmonton

Drove out from Regina with some friends to see the show. First time at Rexall and first time seeing any of these bands. Machine Head blew the place up and had the pit just raging. Megadeth sounded tight and loud as ever. Slayer ripped it up, would've liked to see them play a little bit longer though. Well worth the trip, hope they come back again!
