About

Originating in Huntington Park, CA in 1981 as a cover band in the head-banging scene, Slayer has become one of the most important metal bands in rock history, commonly referred to in the Big 4 alongside Anthrax, Megadeath and Metallica. Their first two albums, 1983’s Show No Mercy and 1985’s Hell Awaits, were released on Metal Blade Records, before they signed to Rick Rubin’s Def Jam label in 1986. There they released their third album Reign in Blood, which caught mainstream attention and has proved to be a genre-defining thrash metal album, influencing countless bands as well as the subgenres of death metal and black metal. Tom Araya’s shouted vocals and graphic lyrics are thought-provoking and articulate, while their tight musical structures combining hardcore rock’s rhythms and speed metal’s frenzied pace generate fast and aggressive songs, intensified through the use of double bass drumming, and unconventional but engaging guitar riffs. This all-out rock offensive has been wowing ticket holders for over three decades, selling out concerts across the globe. Over the years, Slayer has been nominated for five Grammy awards, most recently 2009’s World Painted Blood, and continues to tour while working on new material.

    What happened to the sound?

    by blondeboy71 on 2009-07-16Rexall Place - Edmonton

I love Slayer and Megadeth. I have listened to them for years, and gain more respect for the band members and their work each day. Needless to say I was very excited to hear that these two metal giants were playing at the same event, and bought my ticket online within minutes of finding the ad. I will be brief. At the concert, the sound was poor. The vocals and bass frequencies were almost inaudible from where I was sitting. Many of the people around me left to find better sound. Some anecdotal reports indicated that the sound was better standing in front of the main entrance. The price of the ticket was not justified. I hope the next time either band visits Edmonton that they pay more attention to this. These two metal giants, and the opening bands deserved a better setup.

It was awesome! .... if you were smashed.

by Kayy on 2009-07-16Rexall Place - Edmonton

I love megadeath, and I'm impartial to slayer, but I had the chance to see 2 of the big 4 at once. The idea of it was awesome, I'd already seen Metallica and they were great so I had pretty high expectations for Megadeath and Slayer. Well, to cut to the chase, Megadeath chose a crappy set list and played close to nothing from 'Rust In Peace', and all of Slayer's songs mixed together. The bands also chose to talk for a large period of time, and if the sentences were more than three words long, nobody could understand a thing they were saying. Overall, Megadeath's performance of their older songs is what warrants the show 3 stars. The people who seemed to enjoy the show were the drunk slayer fans, for anyone that was remotely close to sober or there for Megadeath, the show was not worth the ticket price unless you were moshing on floor.

    MEGADETH BROUGHT THE HOUSE DOWN!

by Doctorsound on 2009-07-16Rexall Place - Edmonton

Suicide silence was a great starter band, got the crowd rolling for the craziest mosh pit I have seen! When Machine Head came out the audiance went insane! The sickest craziest sacry mosh pit ever! IT was awsome! MEGADETH WAS "THE" band of the night. Simply exceptional. CROWD INTERACTION was amazing...CHANTS of loud happy fans! Slayer came out and it all went downhill from there the "SOUND" was awful, but the music was tight and note for note correct. But the soundman should be shot he couldn't get either guitarist to sound good...it was next to impossible to hear teh vocals...BUT...the band did perform very well! I would go again in a heart beat!

    Canadian Carnage blew my mind

by roytoy on 2009-07-16MTS Centre - Winnipeg

The concert was incredible, the fans were great and anyone of those bands could have been a headliner. The only bad thing about having so many good bands is that they don't all get to play long sets.

    Slayer still has it....

by Jeepman on 2009-07-16Rexall Place - Edmonton

Wow, Slayer still has it in 'em after all these years! Saw 'em for Reign in blood back in the 80's. I was really dissappointed that they only played a short set though. Kill the opening bands and let Slayer play more.....they have enough tunes to last all night....
