About

SLOAN IN CONCERT:

Power pop titans Sloan have achieved cult status in their native Canada and built a diehard following around the world thanks to their potent blend of crunchy riffs and catchy hooks. The band's four members share songwriting duties, and the result is a wildly diverse sound that encompasses jaunty piano ditties, charging pop-punk, and stirring power ballads. Each member sings their own songs in concert, treating fans to a steady stream of distinct styles – from Chris Murphy's bright tenor to Patrick Pentland's rocking growl – before wowing them with gorgeous four-part harmonies. Their all-together-now enthusiasm in concert has ticket buyers singing along on stadium-worthy anthems like "Underwhelmed," "The Other Man," and "The Rest of My Life." Every aspect of Sloan's eclectic, infectious sound is cranked to the max when they perform live, and fans can’t get enough of the rocking party.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Bassist Chris Murphy and drummer Andrew Scott formed Sloan in 1991 while attending the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Guitarists Patrick Pentland and Jay Ferguson joined shortly after, creating the core lineup that’s remained unchanged for over 25 years. The band made their full-length debut in 1992 with Smeared, and instantly caught on with alternative rock fans in Canada. Unfortunately they had frequent disputes with their record label Geffen, who balked at promoting their hooky rock outside Canada during the grunge-obsessed '90s, and following the release of their 1994 sophomore album Twice Removed they split with the label. They used their own label Murderecords to release their 1996 album One Chord to Another, which was a huge critical and commercial success at home and received rave reviews when it was released in the US a year later. The group amassed fans through the late '90s and early '00s with perpetual touring and consistently solid records, and in 2006 they finally cracked the US charts with their eighth album Never Hear the End of It. Their popularity continued to grow abroad, leading up to the Top 10 debut of their 2014 album Commonwealth on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Well into their third decade together, Sloan continues to impress both critics and fans with their adventurous recordings and powerhouse concerts.

I don't own one sloan record, but I've seen them live 3 times and never miss a chance to do so! Check them out when they are in your town. Fun, eclectic, jamming band. Oh, and don't act so surprised when they switch up instruments, it's all part of the show folks. Good times. Very fan friendly band.

It was a superb show. I couldn't believe my eyes and ears. Polished set. Recommend seeing them any chance you get. Mr Murphy even took some snap shots with the fans following the show.

Best show I've seen in a long time

by Audience on 2009-12-12Sait's The Gateway - Calgary

I was saying to my sister before the show, Sloan is just so Canadian. I suppose to a large extent to it is due their long and strong presence in the Canadian music scene; they've been around and have always had a positive reputation. There's only one way a band can stay around that long, you have to be good. And I knew that, hence buying tickets to their show. But I didn't really know in what way. But I figured it out as soon as they hit their first united chord of the opening song. These guys just have it. The quitar tone, oh the tone! I can't remember the last time I heard a rock band sound that good. I'd have to think back to Big Wreck 8 years ago. Sloan has everything that makes a rock band just, well...amazing. The type of amazing that you just want to consume somehow. The sound is so thick and full you just have this strong desire to just take it all in as fast as and any way you can. They are a rarity these days, in that they are actually amazing musicians that blow you away with their multi-talents, and they show it off, leaving you shaking your head in dismay and screaming for more. Not many bands out there still do that for me, and I was ecstatic to discover Sloan belonged in this group This is a sharp contrast to the opening band that made it their goal not to move more than necessary and play every song at 160 beats per minute. But they also got the short end of the sound guy's stick, as I've never heard such a bad mix in my concert going days.

    So Much Fun

by truthgirl on 2009-12-11Louis' Pub - Saskatoon

Sloan is such a good band. Reason why I went was to be entertained on a very cold Saskatchewan winter night. Warmed me right up. The odd part was explaining to all the youngins how long Sloan has been around (they played on University campus). Still don't know what the sign said held up most of the night by a zealous fan who looked like Axl Rose. Thank you Sloan for a fun night.

Amazing Band... not so amazing venue

by erchapma on 2009-12-10The Pyramid - Winnipeg

HOLY GOD I love this band. An unforgettable, stunning, amazing show every single time. They are so fun, so chill, and put on a great show. The set list was fabulous, an excellent collection. Such a great group. I just can't get over how amazing this show was! The opening acts were pretty good too, I liked hearing some new music. The venue, however, was freezing, it was a very run down venue with exceedingly expensive drinks. A friendly place, however. The crowd left a lot to be desired. I will not be going there for any other events again, unless Sloan decides to grace us with their presence once more.
